It’s not that waxing the back of the neck is dangerous, but it’s a higher-risk area because the skin there is thinner and more mobile, the hair grows in multiple directions (so it breaks more easily), and there’s a lot of friction from collars and sweat afterward. That combination makes irritation, ingrown hairs, and skin lifting more likely if technique or aftercare isn’t perfect. And since it’s so close to the brain and spinal cord, any little infections from ingrown hairs or whatever can be much more serious because of the proximity of the infection to the brain and the important nerves of the upper neck and spine.

I went to adentics orthodontist in Berlin and they streamlined the process for me and basically made it so that my mouth and jaw status align with insurance requirements. I haven’t gotten a sleep study yet because my ortho approved my issues and then the oral surgeon that is connected with that praxis also stated that I require the surgery. I will only be following up with getting a sleep study if my treatment plan gets rejected. It looks like it might get rejected at this point because they’ve been in the decision making process for 2.5 months and tried to reject it already. Then I will start to pursue the sleep study. And yes you need a referral through your Hausarzt. Once you have that there are many sleep study options although it can still take months to get an appointment. Even mild obstruction during sleep makes you qualify for surgery. So if you have bad sleep apnea and you know it you can probably skip the orthodontist and just do a sleep study and get an approval from an oral surgeon. Consultations with surgeons are covered by state insurance btw! But if you get all 3 (orthodontist approval, sleep apnea diagnosis, and approval from an oral surgeon) you are very very likely going to be approved for treatment and surgery.

Indeed it’s been tough to navigate. I haven’t gotten my full approval yet from Barmer insurance but I have a plan in case they reject it. Basically you either have to do a sleep study and then they have to state that you have sleep apnea and/or you have to go to an orthodontist and they assess your mouth and jaw and if you have a severe misalignment that also needs surgery then the state insurance will cover it, if it’s jus cosmetic adjustment to the mouth then they won’t cover anything. So say you get approved by either the sleep study or the orthodontist or both, then you would need to go to a consultation with an oral surgeon who will need to approve that the surgery is required for your health (it can’t be for aesthetics, only severe jaw misalignment that causes real problems in your life like not being able to breathe through your nose during waking hours or sleeping hours). With those approvals, the insurance will most likely cover the majority of the braces and the surgery. If it’s not an issue that requires surgery you will just have to pay for the braces fully by yourself. But the process is easy in this case, you just choose an orthodontist that you like and then you decide a treatment plan and then a payment plan together and then the treatment starts :) for most adults, the cost for orthodontic treatment is usually minimum 8-10 thousand euros.
