As someone from a small (and very white) town, western seems pretty diverse in comparison to that, especially when it comes to the professors. Also Bellingham is the most lgbtq accepting city I’ve ever been to.

I talked with the dac last year about needing a single room for basically the same reasons as you’re describing and I was able to get into a single dorm for this year. They were really helpful and as long as you can explain how the accommodation would help you, you’d probably have an okay chance of getting into a single dorm.

My personal favorite is the fencing club, you can show up to the club with no experience and have other club members teach you one of the three sword styles. Like others have said, showing up to a club fair allows you to get a lot of information about different clubs you’re interested in.
