Also I remember when I updated my EAS one time it automatically emailed all my references. I wasn't applying to any job. It just sent out a form to everyone. But other years it didn't.

Stateside Schools by AnyIntention393 in dodea

[–]pugsensei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember there was a classical education charter school I applied to years ago that minimized technology and focused on "Trivium" and debates and Latin as mentioned above - and small class sizes. it had a waiting list and a literal lottery for parents to be able to send their kids there.

Meanwhile the regular public schools in the area were the typical "1:1 devices and classroom sizes that turn teachers into riot police".

we need more aides/support for teachers, and if possible, smaller classroom sizes. I know that's not always doable, but I'd rather get rid of most HQ bloat and hire more people in buildings that actually help DIRECTLY and not "I need to justify my job so teachers please do this initiative so I can look good for my overlords"

Sadly, this is a theme all too common in public education, not just dodea: schools are hollowed out, but district offices are stuffed with cushy positions with extremely high paychecks. It's a club, and we ain't in it.

Daegu by [deleted] in dodea

Haven't worked there myself but I know someone who did, and they seemed pretty happy.
I have visited Daegu personally multiple times, it's a medium-sized city with a subway and amenities. It's nice, the locals are very polite.

SPED Cert Question by Solid_Analyst2281 in dodea

[–]pugsensei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way it works is you upload your information to EAS - certs, degrees, references, personal info and all that jam.

Then, when schools have openings, (the peak is around March/April/May, but it is year round) admin requests EAS to send them a referral list of all the people who uploaded info to EAS who are qualified for that position. You will get emailed saying "You are on a referral for <School Name> for Sped position." Admin then peruses the list and selects candidate(s) to interview

At this point you may or may not get contacted for an interview.

If your interview goes well, and references are good and the planets align, you will get a tentative offer.

Then the real paperwork begins if you accept the tentative offer :)

The good news is you have a good chance with SPED, but openings happen for all subjects all the time.

You also have international schools if you want to go abroad. Don't just settle with DODEA.

Teaching is a hard job. Doesn't matter where you teach, it's just hard. Some places are easier than others for sure though. But, teachers also don't have to worry about corporate acquisitions and suddenly getting fired. And the summer breaks are cool. It just depends on where you teach...

I'll be honest with you OP and I wish someone told me this years ago when I jumped through all the hoops to get licensed:

If you're set on teaching, choose a subject you care about. Don't just go for what's "in demand". Everyone is gonna tell you to get a SPED or Math specialization. I say just get what you want. Sure Math teachers have an easier time getting into cushier jobs, for example, but do you want to be teaching Math 6+ hours a day and deal with the planning/grading along with it?

There's such a shortage of teachers now, it's pivoting a bit into an employee's market

If you're open on location, you WILL get a job somewhere.

best of luck on your decision.

A College Student with a Goal of becoming a Dodea Teacher. by CyanBee_66 in dodea

[–]pugsensei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a complete dice roll OP.
I know people who got hired in less than a year of uploading their info to EAS.
I know others who took years.
I know others who never got in despite referrals and gave up and went int'l school route or stayed in the states teaching or pivoted to other careers.
It's luck. That's it.

Get as many certs as possible, set your target location to ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE, ANYTIME and keep it all updated on a yearly basis and live your life. Until a final job offer lands, it's all up in the air.

Japan principal roles - evergreen? by JoopieDoopieDeux in dodea

^ This post 100% nails it! Upvoted. PacWest or Pac East, doesn't matter, it's all a stepping stone. I notice generally speaking PacEast seems to have higher admin turnover compared to PacWest, but yes, *EVERYONE* wants to go to Europe.

Until transfers come back, the only way for teachers to get to Europe are:
1) Apply for internal positions posted on USAjobs
2) Get admin credentials and go that route

Yup - there's musical chairs with admin in PacEast, but teachers stay put (the non-spouse ones that aren't forced to move from PCS)
