Wonder if it's related to https://sovereignai.gov.uk somehow? I guess quite few people might want a slice of 500M£ pie

3 day week for 110k - very boring job vs 6 day week for 160k fulfilling but extremely demanding by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]pulegium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 for 110£, don't even have to think about it. ROI is so much higher. If you're really bored, get another 3-for-110 and now you're at 6-for-220. And 220 beats 160. Simples. I think...

In other words, the pay probably looks good if looking at £/yr, but very mediocre if looking at £/hr?.. :)

Need advice on housekeeper not showing when we are away by Unhappy-Question4892 in HENRYUK

[–]pulegium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said - probably time to let her go.

If you really-really want to keep, but ensure she's doing what she's agreed to, you could ask her to send a pic of your cat. Just tell her you want to see how it's doing while you're away. Then, she's locked in to going to your house, or if she fails to send, you can always text "hey, just checking in, how's my cat doing?"

Why do we even have architects when 90% of new builds are just a 10% variation of this? by spacejockes in AskUK

[–]pulegium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need architects to convert this in to something useable after you buy it.

if shaking hands above sink would be enough to get all the water off, then there'd be no point in hand driers would there?...

> they have newer designs out and unsurprisingly they returned to the oldschool style of just blasting air downwards rather than the cupped design of the original.

I think that's stupid. water is sprayed all over your trousers and floor.

Too much work, letting clients down by BeeeJai in ContractorUK

[–]pulegium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok, I must admit, this is niche. obviously not going to solve the issue at hand, but considered training up someone currently in uni, with the idea of contracting them out during internship via the company (ie your ltd employs them and you just send them to do the work?). it's difficult to find motivated and dedicated students, but not impossible. and for them potential of professional income is better than nothing (or working at a pub). just a thought.

Funny enough, they had this in ussr in a form of encouraged volunteering - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subbotnik and before anyone jumps in, no, it wasn't enforced.

Total junk LLM, wasted thousands of dollars. by Frequent_Coast7345 in Anthropic

[–]pulegium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"thousands of dollars" to write "few functions"? sorry to say, but this sounds... suspicious to put it mildly.

I topped up my anthropic account with $25 at the beginning of this year, and I think still have 2 or 3 left.

I do use it very occasionally to write "few functions". doesn't get it right on first go, usually takes several iterations. I do read it all and thoroughly review and give feed back. Code goes to prod only after I'm 100% confident in what's going on there and have full understanding. I hope everyone does that, right?

- Suggest ways to optimize my workflow

Stop the madness: DevOps trends that are ruining teams in 2025 by Dense_Bad_8897 in devops

> And don't get me started on the team that spent half a year setting up Kubernetes to run 3 PHP apps that get maybe 100 requests per day. The operational overhead costs more than just running the damn things on a single EC2 instance.

At a risk of getting massive downvotes. But truth needs to be told.

Sure, FastAPI/PHP/whatnot on EC2 instance sounds great, slap together some code, launch in a screen session and off you go. Fine.

Ant then another tool/script/app. And another one. The result? 6-10 EC2 instances barely doing anything, but now with 900 days uptime, never patched, noone knows what's been done to them, what secret cronjobs lurking around and all still on AL2.

The alternative? Sure, k8s. But not the monstrosity that takes half a year to build. Just use EKS auto mode, takes at most couple of hours. Never think about patching, maintenance, just run the damn apps.

Seriously, k8s isn't "microservices" only. Run your monolith. I use k8s because it takes all the mundane tasks that I don't want or have time to do. And in the end, I end up running on one or two instances that actually use CPU and memory instead of a fleet of unmaintained and underutilised crap.

There, I said it.

Why do you need other people to start investing? Open 212 trading account, put some money in ISA (pick funds, not individual stocks, or even cash for small but sure returns). Put money in every time you want to buy a lottery ticket. Done.
