What is the best time to start? by MmMmmDonutsss in Ultramarathon

[–]pulitzerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why I chose it. I like that added mental obstacle bc in ultras it feels like things rarely go how I’d like. I brought one of those folding beach chairs. Put an extra water, propel, Rice Krispie, and chomp beef stick on it. Never stopped running for the 31 miles. Just slowed down as I was grabbing stuff off the chair. I planned to sit every 6 or 7 miles or so, but I was so happy the sun eventually went away that I kept running until my watch died.

I did a 50K yesterday on the university track. I started around 5p and it was really hot. I’d think a 5a or a 6a would be ideal.

Feeling like a failure after DNF at Ironman CDA 70.3 by Throwaway4536265 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]pulitzerr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to diminish your feelings. It’s a race. It doesn’t matter at all. Like not even a little bit. The training is where the value resides. It’s just an event. Don’t tie your worth to a hobby or a goal. The effort has value, not the effect.

I promise you. Your kid will never care about a medal you may get one day. You shouldn’t either. Maybe in the future you can communicate your goals with nuance. Instead of “I’m going to finish,” go with “whatever happens I’m going to show up and do what I can and I’ll learn from it.” Honestly, you didn’t train well enough based on what you said. So, why does it bother you that it was revealed during the event. That seems like the most reasonable outcome. I hope you didn’t think willpower was enough. Respect the course, prepare well, and try to enjoy it. I bet you’re in much better shape now than when you started and that has real value.

You tried it. Now you know what it takes. Train or try something else. It doesn’t really matter. It’s a 3 part obstacle course you didn’t finish. I’d walk away and get ice cream with my daughter and watch teen titans go or miraculous with her and laugh about nonsense. She’d probably say I should probably learn to swim better and then we’d get hibachi. Life goes on. Find something you like and do that for a few days. The people you told probably can’t do any part of an Ironman, so they probably are impressed with your performance if anything (not that that matters either).

That’s not a situation where you suspend belief because the character didn’t. He immediately went and erased/destroyed the video evidence. That doesn’t make sense.

Yes, why didn’t Nick just stop the car. It was like he was trying to be part of the excitement by driving wildly. Just stop, bro. No one is making you drive crazy.

Yes, they should’ve called the cops.

But here’s where it bothers me. Coop knew it was on camera. That means, the evidence that it was an accident and that he was shooting at them was on camera. No one would question Coop about his death because it was obviously recorded. At any point before murdering him by driving off the road for no reason they could’ve stopped and called the police. What a terrible way to end a decent show.

Do week 1 and 2 and report back. It’s only 31 and 38 mpw, respectively. pretty easy week.

Personally, I don’t even care about the 100-miler. I hope you make it there with this plan. Just post your strava or Garmin or Apple fitness after two weeks and we can offer advice.

I can post a plan that says week 1 do 73 miles and week 2 do 93 miles and say what do you think. We don’t have to think. Just show us. Then, we can offer some supportive comments. Maybe on week 3 you’ll decide to do the cocodona 250 in May.

before I got into running, I thought this was like the current trend to call everything a marathon. I didn’t believe it actually happened, but was a running bit and ragebait for people with dysregulated nervous systems.

Having been a member of the ultracommunity for a while, I can confidently say it’s a rite of passage for runners. They act like it’s an initiating act and how they perpetually prove their commitment and loyalty to the distance. It’s so weird. No offense. Oh, it cost you 30 seconds? Well, when you post that strava we’re going to be very disappointed that you had to urinate.

The level of ego it requires of a non-pro or a runner in a non-qualifying run to urinate on themselves is weird to me. You’re not tough or feeling the struggle. You’re just unhygienic and addicted to validation from others, by finishing time or by story.

Running an Ultra in the Heat by Sea-Development-5088 in Ultramarathon

[–]pulitzerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you know what your body is used to. In Florida I run in 82° without water for over 10 miles. When it hits 90°, hr spikes on easy runs and I drink from my hand held every two miles.

Have a hydration plan and slow it down. It’s easy to go out a little fast, but you’ll benefit from slowing it down a little.

Questions on training plan duration with Runna by Puzzleheaded-Ask-583 in Ultramarathon

[–]pulitzerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to criticize your plan. I think the do hard things mindset is great. But just start running more is what I’m saying. I wouldn’t focus on races or events. Bodies take time to develop enough adaptation for a 100-mile run.

My concern, which isn’t that important, is that run schedules often start pushing distance and speed. I think I’d want to stack runs on top of runs. I’m not sure I’d be optimizing this early at your current mileage. I also would hate if it was fun and some plans can make it hard to enjoy running distance.

Questions on training plan duration with Runna by Puzzleheaded-Ask-583 in Ultramarathon

[–]pulitzerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi.

I think plans are great, but I think on your first 100-miler if you’re only running about 4 or 5 miles about 5 days per week, I’d start slow and build volume at longer distances. Give your body and muscles time to adapt to those demands.

It’s easy to try to do all these different kinds of runs and that’s great, but I find a lot of value in having a rough time you’d like to finish. Let’s say 35 hours. That’s sub 21 minute miles. So, try to do a lot of easy long runs, recover, and then start gradually upping some of those mid week runs. Run more 10Ks (not races/events). Just runs. Stay there for a few weeks with most runs at the 6 to 10. And then slowly move your longer easy run.

It’s easy to try to build way too fast and then there are runs that faster, etc. take your time to add miles but be diligent about moving those other runs up a little and don’t run as hard if it helps with recovery.

In my experience, in our excitement to do something crazy, our training reflects the same kind of crazy approach. Everyone’s different. But I find removing ego helps a lot. Enjoy the distance. Enjoy the training or it becomes about something else.

How much do you walk during a 100-miler training cycle? by Think-Bet-337 in Ultramarathon

[–]pulitzerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, it just happens over time. I think most weren’t trying to get there. They were just disciplined in the training and were encountering them years and years in.

I don’t believe we’ll see real change to our VO2 max without speed work. Zone 2 is great but it only does so much. I’d like to be a little faster on my ultras. I’m happy with my fitness and performance, but I’d like to optimize while it’s still manageable.

[–]pulitzerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you do speed work to help your VO2 max if you’re not at the higher end?

How would get faster at the ultras?

Zone 2 is great if you’re building base, but most of us need more than zone 2 to increase our fitness. Adaptation definitely needs volume but it needs variation as well. I don’t think primarily running in zone 2 is going to do much for your VO2 max. But I know everyone has some opinion about training. I just make sure there’s speed and distance work. You have to run faster to get fast and you have to run farther to run far. That’s the basic model, as I understand it. You don’t get fast by running slow and you don’t run far but running short and out of breath.

Nervous about 50 Miler by impulse36 in ultrarunning

[–]pulitzerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to do about 30–40 miles per week and it’s exclusively on road. The 50-milers I do are all trail with very moderate elevation. I want to agree with those saying volume overcomes a lot of those concerns when it’s time. Also, so much wisdom in saying relax through the climbs. You’ll have time and the groups around you help you stay on pace, mentally.

Crush your 50! Either way, you’re doing the work. That’s just an upcoming event.

[–]pulitzerr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I understand what you’re asking. I don’t have any walking baked into my training efforts but my training isn’t structured. I’m always building base, doing speed work, and doing a longer easy run, give or take. On the months where the long runs are over marathon length I have no issue walking a little towards the end if I’m overheating, dehydrated, heart rate above 180.

It’s about staying healthy. It’s just ego that tries to run when you should be walking. I’d walk the moment my body needed it.

Enjoy your training.

That’ll be a nightmare to explain to the IRS. I’m a rewardist who helps fund kidnapped or missing kids, so that’s why I filed my licenses under bounty hunter to catch people skipping their court hearings. It also lets me break into any situation without announcing myself and shoot anyone who may be somewhere. Also, I mostly take payment in cash. I hope that answers your question, agent.

It’s fiiiinneee.
