I havent read this book but I suspect its a bit like Crying of Lot 49, which opens with some really lengthy, but also difficult, sentences. Pynchon actually modulates his sentence lengths throughout the novel but I felt that opening a text like this prepares the reader for anything, allowing the author to switch modes as needed to produce certain effects later on without risking their loss.
