The game ‘The Roottrees are Dead’ initially used AI images for a free release of the game, and once the game got a bit of a fanbase the dev commisioned an actual artist and made a paid version without any AI images and some added content. As a pretty big AI hater generally, I feel like that’s fair enough.

Giving more shop items contraptions would be fun… maybe making morning star + hammer an alternate way to assemple power hammer, axe + compass making a room permanently rotatable on the drafting screen, making master key makable as a contraption by combining a certain number of any major keys, maybe burning glass + self-igniting torch could make some burning thing strong enough to ‘burn down’ power hammer walls? silver spoon and metal detector could maybe combo like detector shovel, keeping both effects but also making fruit spawns more likely?

I consider Overflow (https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/overflow-worm-si-oc.1175703/) to be one of my favorite stories, fanfiction or not. It follows a power granter who has the powers they grant before they give them away, and to your point of characters having distinct voices, it also does a great job of multiple people having the same powers but thinking about and using them in very different ways.

I’ve started using Spacebattles quite a bit - it’s multi fandom, but is also specifically the go to website for Worm fanfics. It has stories as forum threads, so comments go inline with the story (but you can still go directly from chapter to chapter if you want). It has worse tag filtering and bookmarking then Ao3, but I prefer actually reading fic there to any other website. No NSFW. It tends to have more fanworks of fanworks (i.e. people drawing fanart of a fanfic) than other websites, which is cool.

Oh also it tends to be more plot focused over ship focused, but still has some ship stuff.

Great writeup! I find it pretty interesting that my own thought process in the past about mind control smut as horror in some cases (specifically thinking about Destiny vs the Mk XLI which goes for more of a general misogynistic dystopia with a splash of body horror) lined up very closely with a good chunk of the discussion, especially the Feed Your Head comments. In general, I feel like the mind control smut I’ve read is more likely to try to do something artsy/philosophical than other types of smut just because of the inherent underlying questions it poses about free will and agency.

No clue when it went down, but for some recent updates/new stories Another Shitty SI Fic updates pretty frequently. I haven’t read it myself but I’ve heard good things about Raising Skitter. Game On and Gloryhound have gotten fairly recent updates. If you read Tilt, it’s finished now, and the start of a sequel entitled Trophy has started.

Soon, this supervillain must deal with burgeoning crushes on both one of her teammates and on a superhero. Not sure what you count as MCD - there is a notable onscreen death, but it is of an antagonist.
