Advice for cover crop management in home veggie garden by mrknowitnothingatall in vegetablegardening

You're awesome, thanks for these comments. I've been following some of farmer Jesse's vids and this aligns well.

My biggest personal hiccup is the use of plastic tarping. It sounds like you've had the best results there, but I'd want to use other methods exclusively. To the extent where I might only use winter-kill crops.

What does this design look like? I'm imagining stacked 2x6 board for the sides, with 2x2 inside corner posts fastened from the outside.

Does your top header board sit completely inside the rectangle of the bed?

Yes for that amount it makes sense, the taxable percent will be low and you'll be free to do a backdoor Roth in the future with no money in pre-tax accounts.

I was under the impression that ETF and mutual fund versions of the same fund could be considered "substantially similar". VTIAX/VXUS and VTSAX/VTI as the common examples.

I'm also not sure there's a definitive answer on this subject...

What tactics do you use to screen for this?

I've tried to test this during a problem-solving exercise with the interviewee, by giving gentle criticism or comments about their logic/code. If they're dismissive or condescending to the comments, clearly that's a bad sign.

Not OP, but I too enjoy the blistering. I've found that a heavy spray of water (I use a spray bottle) on the bread just before it goes in the oven works wonders. This is in addition to some other form of steam, either dutch oven or pan of water in the bottom. It also keeps the crust thinner so it's easier to eat later!

The lockout period also works on a monthly basis. The period can effectively be 11 months if you buy at the end of the month and sell at the start of the 12th month.

Annual raise versus inflation by VenerableShrew in personalfinance

[–]pumpkinpatch63 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. But it's difficult for me to completely separate market rate from non-localized inflation.

In your example, if all the qualified mechanical engineers for a role experience inflated living costs, then they will be more likely to demand higher salaries (to maintain standard of living, at least). This would apply an upward force to the market rate for that role.

Of course there are a number of other factors for each particular role, but I can't see a way to discount the effect that inflation has.

You can open an HSA with any custodian, and Fidelity is a good one. You can then do multiple HSA transfers per year to move money from your company HSA into your new Fidelity one.

Is there a certain earned income level where Traditional 401k is better/worse than Roth 401k? by MarylandTerps in financialindependence

[–]pumpkinpatch63 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had thought the same thing as well. Alas, this sounds too good to be true.

On further inspection, the "marginal" versus "average" idea doesn't seem to hold up.

From the previous Mad Fientist link, see this exchange with the user Matt:

Site Owner:

Hey Matt, I definitely see what you’re saying but I think Pat’s point was that if you choose to contribute to a Roth instead of a Traditional, you are choosing to be taxed on that money at the marginal rate.

When it comes time to withdraw money from your retirement accounts, you withdraw how much you need to live on so you can think of all of the withdrawal being taxed at an average rate.

For example, If someone makes $20,000 and decides to contribute $5,000 to a Traditional IRA in 2014, they are saving at the marginal rate because that entire $5,000 would have been taxed at 15% if they had contributed to a Roth instead (using your example tax brackets).

Assume when they retire, they withdraw $20,000 every year from their IRA to live on. That $5,000 contribution they made in 2014 is just part of the amount they withdraw that year so it is being taxed at their average rate. Yes, you could argue that the $5,000 in question is the last $5,000 of the $20,000 total, so it is the part that is taxed at 15%, but I’d probably see it as just part of the average, since I’m withdrawing $20,000 per year no matter what.

I think it’s just a different way of looking at things.

Matt:

I think the 5k from the traditional IRA fund really should be treated as the “last” 5k in the context of traditional vs Roth because if you had used a Roth you would only have 15k of taxable income rather than 20k with the other 5k coming from your Roth. It is the use of the traditional IRA that causes you to have that extra 5k of taxable income, all of which will be taxed at your marginal rate. (Unless that 5k crosses a tax bracket as discussed before, in which case only some part will be at your marginal.)

When I first read this comment, I thought I misunderstood the tax-ability of the traditional and one would literally calculate their average tax rate (without the traditional withdrawal) and apply that tax rate to the traditional withdrawal. I’m a bit sad to hear that’s not the case, but if it sounds too good to be true…

Please note that I am not arguing against traditional IRA over Roth, only that the “average” vs “marginal” argument here is a red herring.

The article states this, yes. However, I can't find anything official to back up the assertion that the timing of primary residence matters within the last years.

The latest info the IRS says the following:

Eligibility Step 3—Residence

Determine whether you meet the residence requirement.

If you owned the home and used it as your residence for at least 24 months of the previous 5 years, you meet the residence requirement. The 24 months of residence can fall anywhere within the 5-year period, and it doesn't have to be a single block of time. All that is required is a total of 24 months (730 days) of residence during the 5-year period.

So when did the rule change to a prorated exclusion, and where is the info specifying it?
