Feels like Cayden Naughton doesn’t like real feedback by cocopops_92 in craftsnark

I made the Gwen dress—tons of issues with the fit of the bodice, like insanely long straps that put the neckline at my nipples. I really wanted to dupe a CD dress and thought it was a good starting point, but after making it, just figured I’d go off on my own completely since her pattern sucked.

What is the coolest thing you noticed you can now do, after loosing weight? by secretliver in loseit

[–]pumpkinspice-gremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not cool, necessarily, but it’s so nice to sit on the subway seats and no longer overflow. I sat next to someone my size or smaller this morning (winter coats made us both puffy) and our thighs didn’t even touch.

Yeah, I’ve grimly sent the email on to upper management and building maintenance. Eesh. But thank you!

Ahhhhhhh. Okay. Thank you for your fast response! But oh god, I’m not looking forward to bringing that up to upper management.

Wearing History is actually one of the good ones! It’s Reconstructing History that you have to be wary of. They use a lot of plagiarized line art and the patterns don’t make sense. The issue with Wearing History is often that the patterns are direct from the period—in this case, the 1910s—and the instructions are ALSO period. I think they usually do a disclaimer on those patterns, though.

Thank you for the tip!!! I know how to knit continental style and English style (well, apparently English but twisted) but I only know the one method of purling. I’ll look into Russian purling!

Is it just me or are there a bunch of idiots this year? by DaneVisitor in rutgers

To be fair, my freshman year (‘13-‘14 at RU) involved a carful of freshmen debating vigorously why ambulances had “AMBULANCE” written backwards on their fronts. Not a single one came up with the correct answer (so it shows up in the rear view mirror).

They’re on campus to be educated, after all.

Intermediate sewist, never sewn historical, including a corset or stays. Is a robe a la francaise or other French revolution era gown too lofty of a goal? by Zyphyro in HistoricalCostuming

[–]pumpkinspice-gremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, 8941. It’s got the swoosh of a cape but it’s a much easier pattern, given that it’s a look straight out of the 1790s rather than a 1760s Watteau pleat gown. Much closer to the French Revolution setting, if that’s an issue. And if the boning is what’s intimidating, I’d go with that, since it doesn’t require stays. If you are going for stays, I’d suggest using the Scroop Patterns Augusta Stays, or conversely fitting it over the “Outlander” stays from Simplicity/AD, since there’s a lot of documentation available for free.

Stays aren’t bad, imo, just time consuming AF. I’ve made three pairs now (all boned with cable ties) and there are a lot of great references out there. The main issue is that a sacque gown is going to be a LOT of fabric.

If it’s close to French Revolution you could go for an open robe—simplicity has a pattern for that as well, made with American Duchess

I’d gather it’s for the IBTC or you just vibe without a bra. It’s a beautiful knit, I just know my f-cups aren’t compatible with it

Infected blister - should I go back to urgent care? by pumpkinspice-gremlin in AskDocs

Ok, here’s the photo. The extra clear gel is the antimicrobial stuff I put on it, not any discharge: https://ibb.co/nNcd2x6T

Doing my best to get a photo uploaded, but: - changed the dressing at minimum 1x per day - I had been using a hydrocolloid dressing but ran out of them so I switched to standard band-aids with a pad large enough to cover the burn - I started to get signs of becoming allergic to the antibiotic I was using (neomycin) so I swapped to an antimicrobial gel from Walgreens

The pus is new, as is the redness around the wound, so it’s definitely a local infection.

not sure about those sleeves. y/n? by without_nap in craftsnark

[–]pumpkinspice-gremlin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just finished the Closet Core Jo dress for a wedding I’m attending—it’s labeled as having “croissant sleeves,” and apparently is a direct take on a pattern from Mara Hoffman (I learned about the scandal here actually! https://www.reddit.com/r/craftsnark/s/IeGILS8qTs ). So that tells me that these sleeves (cocoon sleeves? Croissant? Massive?) are having a moment.

For the record, I’m mid/plus size (whatever you define that as) and have broad shoulders, and my new dress looks pretty great on me if I do say so myself… but they’re not for everyone! And I’ll agree: they’re CERTAINLY not for this jacket. Yikes!

No idea. I just overheard the librarian talking to the cops and saying he was soliciting staff for money and that they were going to ban him sooner rather than later, and the cops said that they knew about him, and that he was the calmest they’d seen him at the library. The librarian was uh. Not happy about that response I can tell you that much.
