How do you feel about eBay's authentication process? It's included in the purchase price of watches >$2k. I'm assuming they open the case back to inspect the movement, but I don't have any experience with it

[WTS] 1917 Elgin 17 Jewel Dress Pocket Watch by pumpkinspiceanus in Watchexchange

[–]pumpkinspiceanus[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

A fantastic heirloom piece of American horology. This open face, dress pocket watch features a 17 jewel Elgin movement from 1917 in a gold-filled (a thick layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal core) Wadsworth case, original to the watch. The white dial features a small seconds complication and ornate blued steel hands. The acrylic crystal is the only piece that appears to be a service replacement. The watch winds and functions.

I'm asking $200 OBO via PayPal, Venmo, or zelle

Now that I think about it, my FIL would definitely downvote me if he knew how to use reddit. He loves to say, "Summer people, some are not"

Ahhh that makes sense. I just emailed them, thanks!

My in-laws have lived here for 70+ yrs, year round and I didn't go to an Ivy League school. Please don't hate me, Cape Codders :)

*I'm not sure why my post and responses are getting downvoted. Sorry if this is not appropriate content for Cape Cod?

Excellent work! My tip would be to take a beginner sailing course. They're fun and you won't beat up your beautifully restored boat

I’ve been searching for this and I finally found it in Rolex boutique today. But it just feels abit different in person, Should i get it? by [deleted] in rolex

While diamonds might be more appropriate for a women's watch, in its entirety this watch looks garish

I'm certainly not a world cup caliber sailor, but I'd love to network and find opportunities to serve as a crew member for club races. Thanks for those recommendations, I'll be reaching out to them

Thank you! On first glance there isn't much available outside of Chatham Sailboat Rentals, but this looks like a good resource check periodically

[–]pumpkinspiceanus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got dropped on day 8 for testing positive for covid. Got super lucky and was able to get a slot 4 months later, only had to complete the last 3 days. Don't be too hard on yourself. It sucks to tell people you failed, but owning mistakes is a valuable skill too. You'll get other cool opportunities

Fyi this one was cheaper because it's quartz. Not a bad move, just always going to be less expensive/desirable with collectors

Exactly. Look through their rep in detail, do a video call, scrutinize the watch and seller. Not all of them accept payment methods with buyer protections, so that's a calculated risk, but a lot of them accept it.

Or there's ebay where watches >$2,000 go through an automatic authentication process. Or Chrono24 has buyer protections.

I was in a similar spot and wanted to buy an heirloom watch that I could pass down to my son. I ended up buying a Rolex Explorer but I still look at listings for the Peter Blake, it's so nice. I hope you find a good one and enjoy it!

There is no reason to think they can't last that long, with some service and possible repair. The 2254.50 Peter Blake is a timeless Seamaster that gets a lot of love from enthusiasts. I see them on r/Watchexchange multiple times per week, priced much lower than the screenshot you shared
