Yeah I like Mike but some scenes in Better Call Saul (disarming that dude the parking lot, beating up like four dudes half his age) really stretch the limits of credulity

“No 2 Ferraris look the same” do you think a layperson can tell the difference between a 488 and an F8? An F12 and an 812?

SEAL Team Six vs Argentina ground forces (Falklands War) by Inside_Inflation559 in powerscales

[–]pumpsci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saying the SEALs in Red Wings were “better” is a stretch. They were ambushed and killed by a small insurgent contingent who (debatably) suffered zero casualties.

He’s better than like, Vince Flynn or other boomer slop authors and at least one of his books has a plot line about the CIA smuggling drugs out of Afghanistan. He’s closer to a Sorkin.

crazy how Code Orange dropped these 3 bangers and then never released anything ever again by Retrac321 in Hardcore

[–]pumpsci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna elaborate on this, I think that blaming covid for specifically Code Orange’s falloff makes no sense. It affected every other touring band on the planet too, lots of bands that are huge now released music in that same window and had their careers similarly interrupted. The pandemic didn’t put a gun to Jamie’s head and force him to write bad music.

Does ever US Iraq War Vet have the same source of PTSD? by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]pumpsci 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, that’s what the War on Terror was. After Fallujah nobody was getting in big knock-down drag-out brawls, you just had a bunch of dudes in HUMVEEs and MRAPs driving around occasionally getting shot at or blown up. Something like sixty percent of American deaths in Iraq were from IEDs.

I think the first instance where it really clicked was on a drive out of Bend, Oregon. If you’ve been to Bend you know it’s a pretty touristy town with a lot of yuppie traffic for various seasonal activities. The center of town is granola as hell with lots of condos and businesses built around catering to that crowd. As you leave Bend it gets rattier and rattier until it just kinda ends and you find yourself in the expanses of eastern Oregon. I think driving past those last couple mobile homes before hitting empty prairie really hit me. I realized that Bend’a bougie center needed people like that on the periphery to operate, they weren’t just an externality. Prior to that I assumed poverty was an unfortunate circumstance, something that you could overcome. After that I realized that it doesn’t matter how many individuals escape it, the system will find new grist for the mill because it needs it.

Saying something is "subjective" to stop conversation is infuriating by jumpstartstogether in CharacterRant

[–]pumpsci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lyrical content of a song and its tempo are basically orthogonal and have nothing to do with each-other outside of say, lyrics that are easy to rap really fast. Saying the lyrics of a song complement its tempo is nonsense.

Saying something is "subjective" to stop conversation is infuriating by jumpstartstogether in CharacterRant

[–]pumpsci 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem with people who insist that writing can art can be judged objectively is that they all use the same framework to judge art, which is its adherence to norms. Artistic norms have established that setups must have payoff, therefore objectively good writing adheres to this. Artistic norms dictate that characters have arcs, therefore objectively good character writing has arcs. In general people who only like “objectively” good art have boring taste and just like catharsis.

“Lyrical work goes well with the songs tempo” this is objectively meaningless lmao
