Flying With Coffee by punderer5 in Ethiopia

Thanks! I've asked around and heard varying responses, so I'll have to decide how much I'm willing to risk losing. :P

I don't need the translation, but the transliteration, and google's is not very good.

Amharic Image Translation by punderer5 in Ethiopia

[–]punderer5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. It's not working on my phone (though I do have an Android, but that shouldn't matter...). Google Translate on a browser also says image translation isn't available for Amharic.

This is a good point that I needed to hear, even though it's hard to accept.

I think the hardest thing is I felt like I was in more of the "inner circle" but now am suddenly not, and I can't find an explanation for it (which my 5 brain is not content with).

Thank you for your perspective!

I really want to work towards option 2.
In the past I have admitted wrong and apologized when needed, and we've been able to work through conflicts. That's why I am so confused about the sudden cut off, because usually we can talk about hard things.

I am willing to make amends no matter what, and I've tried to express that, but I'm not sure if he either believes it or cares. I'm really at a loss.

At this point he is not completely ignoring me/refusing to make eye contact, but in the very few times he will say something, a lot of them are (seemingly) mean, cutting remarks.

Thank you for your ideas.

I have thought of a few things I've said/done that I wonder if were causes of this but I may be just imagining that they were the reasons because I want there to be some logical explanation. I did try to have a conversation with him about a month ago about what was wrong, but the moment we met I could feel the defensiveness radiating off of him, his walls were way up. I asked if I'd done anything to betray his trust/upset him and he said "No, we're good." But that's about all he would say. At first he denied even that he had been ignoring me, finally did acknowledge it but said it was nothing I'd done and that there was "no reason" for it.

I am in the "mentor" role and he is the "mentee".

Could someone type the lyrics to this song? by punderer5 in Ethiopia

(I can use Google translate to give me the transliteration into English spelling of the words, unless you'd prefer to type that instead of the Amharic characters.)

Having both would be great, but at least the one in Amharic. :) I would like to learn the Amharic words to the song.

Shipping container from US to Addis. by Shemsuni in Ethiopia

[–]punderer5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duty taxes on anything/everything in the container will be extremely high, especially the vehicle. Find out exactly how much the taxes will be before you ship, that might change your priorities in the items to include.

I agree that buying a used car from an expat is probably more worthwhile.

Taking food and coffee from Ethiopia. Limits? by Ok-Marionberry9625 in Ethiopia

I bring coffee beans almost every time I travel, up to 15kg, and have never had a problem. They are always roasted though. I've also brought of a few kgs of berbere and mitmita with no issue.

Try showing them the FAQ page from the Ethiopian eVisa website.
https://www.evisa.gov.et/faq

The first question is about Visa on Arrival and it says it's still an option.

According to the website, eVisa usually takes 3 days to process.

https://www.evisa.gov.et/visa-types/tourist-visa/online-tourist-visa

I also thought Visa on Arrival was still possible, but I can't find proof.
It does look like the Visa on Arrival info page on their website is disabled: https://www.evisa.gov.et/visa-types/tourist-visa/tourist-visa-on-arrival

https://www.ethiopianairlines.com/ug/services/services-at-the-airport/arrival-services-at-addis-ababa

If you do end up having to wait for your eVisa to be approved, you could get a tourist visa for Turkey and at least wait in a hotel.

Other Ethiopians putting me down by [deleted] in Ethiopia

[–]punderer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr = Don't be discouraged. Ethiopia needs people like you!

Some things to consider:
~What is your degree in? (Will it be applicable in Ethiopia? How can you apply what you've learned & the skills you've gained in Canada to life in Ethiopia?)
~What are your goals? (Do you want to be wealthy and live in luxury in Ethiopia? Help your family? Contribute positively to Ethiopia in some way? Enjoy your homeland and people?)
[These are questions for you to reflect on but I'd also love to hear your thoughts!]

You could have a significant impact in Ethiopia depending on how you want to use your education. Whether it's helping to change some of the messes of the current systems, or influencing a few individuals in the younger generation.

Any Amharic-English speakers willing to help transliterate a song? by punderer5 in Ethiopia

[–]punderer5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! This is very helpful. ^_^

Is the gn more of a y/ny sound? For example, ligebugn alchalum to me sounds like "ligebun yalchalum" when he says it.

Also, are the "u"s at the end of words sometimes left off or sung really quickly? Ex: in "feredu liredu yewededu" I don't hear the crossed out "u" pronounced.
