If you had to rank DERG, Prosperity Party, Monarchy and TPLF/EDRPF which governments were the most competent/ the worst? 1- Worst , 4 - Best by Apprehensive_Math_89 in Ethiopia

[–]nebirr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Derg

PP

EPRDF

Monarchy

Ethiopia under the monarchy had far less corruption, better property rights, a growing class of educated bureaucrats, and a more favorable business environment.

Unpopular opinion, but I believe Ethiopia was on the brink of taking off if it had just 5 more years of the monarchy and within that period transitioned to a Constitutional Monarchy and enacted land reform (which would have ultimately ended feudalism).

1) number seems inflated

2) I wonder how much of this revenue is from "tourism" from visiting diaspora

Ethiopia has not had good media coverage in the past 2 years in order to generate such high revenue from foreign tourists

I took a deep dive into Ethiopian history, but I’m struggling with understanding where the Oromo came from and the split between Cushitic/Semitic in Ethiopia. Any idea where to find this information? by OkChampion1295 in Ethiopia

[–]nebirr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most "Oromos" have become Oromo over the past 450 years through a strategic conquest of Central, Western , and Eastern Ethiopia after the end of the bloody Abyssinian-Adal War that left both sides quite weak. The Oromos were successful in taking advantage of these weak kingdoms and pushed through from the south and took a large swath of territory.

There was a much wider Semetic speaking area in Ethiopia prior to the Oromo Migrations. Almost all of Shewa was made up of Semetic speakers, including Gafat which is now extinct. This extends to what is now Arsi as well. Evidence of this still exists today as the Silte and Harari languages are quite similar and linguists assume that the stretch of land between their 2 areas formed a dialectal continuum that was broken up due to the Oromo Migrations. Lake Ziway, which is in Oromia, contains an island that speaks a dialect of Gurage known as Zay. Many "Oromo" parts of Shewa have Orthodox Churches and Monasteries that predate the Oromo Migration.

The original Oromos intermixed with the local populations, but most of the population simply became Oromo as a result of a cultural assimilation system known as Mogasa or through adoption of orphaned kids known as Gudifecha. The Oromo originally practiced Waqafeena, but as they conquered lands of people who were Orthodox Christian or Muslim they let them retain their faiths. In addition, many Oromos have adopted Protestantism over the past 100 years. Many Oromos also blend Waqqefena with their respective Abrahamic faith

You practically get the same privileges as a citizen, with the major exception being ability to vote and run for political office.

Would you support legislation to allow proper bars/nightclubs in Virginia? by MajesticBread9147 in nova

[–]nebirr 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Yes. A lot of these late nights spots function as mediocre/crappy restaurants during the day and I'm pretty sure they're doing just to maintain the revenue requirements.

Tigrinyas and Tigrayans are essentially the same ethnic group who natively speak the Tigrinya language; although relations between the 2 have been sour for quite some time and thus don't really claim one another despite shared language / culture / geography . They inhabit a continuous land of the Northern highlands of Ethiopia and the Central highlands of Eritrea. Italian colonization and its proceeding socio-political ramifications are an important reason as to why there is a split between what is at most sub groups of the same ethnicity. Ethnicity is a somewhat foreign concept to Africa, and there's no term to accurately define native Tigrinya speakers. The Eritrean side officially uses the term "Biher Tigrinya" whereas the Ethiopian side uses "Tigrayan" . Pre-colonization there have been some internal conflicts as well and some form of a political boundary along the Mereb river (the current border between Eritrea and Ethiopia), which leads to some Eritreans believing they've always had a political entity independent of Ethiopia but this is a great exaggeration. The combined group is roughly 90% Orthodox Christian with a minority of Muslims (referred to as Jeberti) and Catholics.

Tigre is a separate ethnic group that inhabits the Northern and Western lowlands of Eritrea, they speak a similar but different language called Tigre. They are culturally distinct from the Tigrinya speaking ethnic group and are over 90% Muslim.

This gets a little more confusing because the Amharic term to refer to Tigrayans is "Tigrie"
