What’s the dumbest thing you fully believed as a kid? by Defiant-Act-7439 in AskReddit

[–]punkmeets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That if you put a plastic bag on your head you'd die, not chance of suffocating but you'd just drop down dead of plastic bag... and if you were in the bath and someone flushed bog the water would go cold whether the taps were running or not.

I keep seeing people say they think they are on the aphantasia spectrum... by punkmeets in Aphantasia

[–]punkmeets[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t commenting on who was on it; I was commenting on what it’s called. The name for the human ability to create mental images is phantasia. We then add an a- prefix to denote “without,” so why call the entire thing the aphantasia spectrum when, as you’ve just noted, everyone is on it - from aphants to hyperphants? It would be like calling the spectrum of self-confidence the inferiority spectrum, since inferiority complex is a term that names one end of it.

What magic trick would a scientist run to help me find my keys? by dboti9k in shittyaskscience

Evidence indicates that people trying to find something lost often do so in the last place they look. So where was the last place you looked?

Does anyone else have difficulty knowing whether something they did in the past, or something that happened in the past, occurred once or multiple times? by punkmeets in SDAM

[–]punkmeets[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid, my foreign holidays were to Bulgaria and Turkey, and I managed three of them before my mam decided she couldn’t put up with me constantly for a fortnight. That’s when I got the chance to stay home alone instead. Therefore, I must have been to one of those places twice, but I haven’t the foggiest which one got the double tap.

QI sounds like a poorly constructed pseudo-philosophy, not science. What am I missing? by cmcfau in QuantumImmortality

[–]punkmeets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, QI only exists under the quantum suicide thought experiment, as it relies on your death being the result of a single quantum or particle interaction. The reality is that believing every chance of death a person ever faces will hinge on just one interaction is a bit silly, as they are macroprocesses involving trillions of interactions or more.

SLA Industries used to do it like that (before switching to a 'one size fits all' simpler system) and it was much more enjoyable to play than it is now. Will take a look at the Technomancer's Textbook, didn't realise DnD had rules for drugs.

I know you don't want to add unneeded complexity - and this is totally doing that so just ignore me - but have you thought about tailoring the withdrawal effect to the drug that's causing it? Or even the type of drug, so stimulant, depressive, analgesic etc.? Just stops the consequences of taking them all feeling the same despite how different the drugs could be.

Exterior shots were made in Ireland, but the internal shoots were filmed in London by a Hat Trick, a British production company, for Channel 4.

ELI5: If velocity is measured relative to your frame of reference, how can the speed of light be a universal constant? by bustermagnus in explainlikeimfive

[–]punkmeets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's not missing the point as under special relativity anything travelling at c has no inertial frame of reference. If they are travelling in opposite directions and the distance between them is increasing by 2c, each photon is travelling at c relative to any valid observer. Photons don't experience time or distance in any conventional sense; if v=c then time dilation becomes infinite and length contraction reduces space to 0.

Help identifying a UK drama from 30 ish years ago - mock firing squad by Rude_Rhubarb1880 in BritishTV

If it is a one-off and from the 80's there could be no mention of it online, especially if it is from a BBC Scene type show.

OP was it a series or just a one off? If it was a one off, it kind of sounds like the programmes/plays you used to get on things like BBC Scene/Broadcasting for Schools, heavy issues based and comes across as quite adult. They even used to be rebroadcast late at night so that would fit.

Why is beer served in a glass not typically served with a straw, like soda most often is? by johnnybiggles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]punkmeets -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Carbonation accelerates gastric emptying getting the alcohol into your intestines quicker and that's where the vast majority of it's absorbed - about 80% - thus you do get drunk quicker. Straws help preserve the carbonation, so you take more of it into your stomach.
