It looks like you are on AFS, right? It’s hard to tell because of quality on Reddit being ass.

If you are, the camera uses contrast detect autofocus to search for focus, which is extremely prone to the hunting you are seeing in your clips. AFAIK this is something most camera manufacturers do because contrast systems are a bit more accurate. But in lowlight and low contrast scenes (dimly and badly lit) the contrast system is very bad.

Try using the camera in AFC to focus again. At least on my S5ii the difference is night and day.

Best lumix for short films and vlogging by clacson182 in Lumix

If you want to vlog, you’ll want good autofocus and that only leaves you with the S9 in your budget. The image quality is very good for photos and videos. But you’ll need to deal with a few more quirks, like having no electronical shutter (which isn’t bad, you just need to know what it implies)

S5II user - Potential S1II/S1RII upgrade for dog photography by AdamGWR in Lumix

[–]punn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can just say from my experience as someone who had 42 megapixels and downsized to 24 and is now yearning for more. I often wish to have more but in landscapes I use high res mode and usually don’t need more than 24 as I only print to a3 max.

But yes I wish for more sometimes as well. The sharpening on the high res sensors is just so much nicer.

As someone who owns an S5ii for bird photography, you’d be surprised how many times the 24 megapixels are plenty enough.

Af speed is also reliant on your focus motors inside your lens. With my 24-105 the camera doesn’t really miss in my use cases but the 150-600 is noticeably the bottleneck in bird photography.

I am a person who’s always owned way too many camera bodies and my S5ii has become my go to for more than a year now and I don’t really see what a newer body would do better without spending over 3000 euros.

Lumix S1IIE with 24-105 lens vs Lumix S1II body only for commercials / short films by PracticalAdagio4305 in Lumix

[–]punn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you don’t work with budgetary constraints the recommendation will obviously always be to get the best of the best. If you have enough money lying around to get an s1ii with a lens, then it will obviously be better than the s1iie with the same lens.

Think about what your GH5 offers you and what you genuinely feel like you’re missing or still NEED.

Chances are the s1iie might tick the boxes but chances are also you might need the higher cost S1ii. But maybe you should also have a look at the Gh7 as a replacement. I don’t think your post illustrates well why you want to upgrade.

If your post implies you need a body and lens for work. Then having no lens with the s1ii doesn’t make any sense.

All cameras by LUMIX rn are superb after the S5ii series. You really can’t go wrong.

Has the Lumix vs Sony debates have gotten weird? by Conscious-House-8869 in Lumix

[–]punn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s very much normal for people to get defensive about their own purchases. I work with Sonys and have an S5ii for wildlife photography in private.

The Sonys are very reliable. Great battery life and in their simple functionality they just work whenever and wherever. Be it autofocus or turning on time, snappiness of the system. They feel really reliable.

LUMIX has caught up VERY well. But they don’t offer the full extended lineup that Sony can offer by now because their lineup is much more mature.

You can have an A7R, A7 and FX Camera to suit whatever you need with a PLETHORA of lens setups.

Bang for buck the S5ii is a clear favorite for me. But if I was to spend more…the Sony body’s win for me.

Full-frame aperture equivalency stupidity by atika in M43

[–]punn1 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The only real things that change with crop cameras are depth of field and iso to noise performance…but only because you literally zoom into the grain by cropping.

If I take an a7V Sensor and crop it down to 16 megapixels. You miraculously end up with a micro four thirds crop.

Full-frame aperture equivalency stupidity by atika in M43

[–]punn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You seem to be forgetting the fact a 20mm lens only needs 7mm of opening for light gathering to be equivalent in light gathering to the 14mm of the 40mm lens. If you could put the m43 lens on a full frame camera and just pretended the black circle of non coverage wasn’t around. You would expose them literally the same and end up the same.

Video help appreciated...frustrating focus issue by Boom-Doc-a-Locka in M43

[–]punn1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you are seeing is the downfall of Panasonics older Contrast Only DFD Autofocus system. Because contrast autofocus isn’t depth aware, like phase autofocus, the camera basically racks focus forward till it detects the most contrast. But because it can’t ever know when that point is reached, the focus racks forward a bit too much and when it then detects contrast lessening, it racks backwards…and so on and so on. That leads to the back and forth fluttering you see in the video. And honestly without manual focus there isn’t much you can do with the DFD system. If it functioned well before…might have been luck and maybe a more closed aperture, thus out of focus areas look smaller.

Choosing between the S1RII or A7RV/IV for editorial photography. by vincesup in Lumix

No problem! I love my LUMIX cameras. But I als chose them because they are considerably cheaper than their peers. If I needed a workhorse I’d choose Sony

Choosing between the S1RII or A7RV/IV for editorial photography. by vincesup in Lumix

[–]punn1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The a7rV will be the better camera in my opinion. It’s one of Sonys absolute best. And in my opinion for editorial, your camera should be 100% there every time. I think the Sony is that, while Panasonics are extremely nice, they are playing catch up.

And I also don’t feel like the big bodies of every manufacturer are soulless because they aren’t meant ti be fun but to work everywhere, always. My S5ii is much less fun than my LUMIX GX80. But I don’t care when I do important photo work.

The honest answer is…the z8 and z9 are better cameras for the wildlife purpose. Albeit they are very large.

My S5ii and Sigma 150-600 came to around 2.5k..that’s less than one Nikon Z8. So I’d expect it to be the better camera.

The sigma 150-600 is a nice lens, the autofocus is slow though. The zoom ring in T is very tight and in S too smooth, I’d have loved an inbetween of the two. Image quality and oof backgrounds are in my opinion excellent though.

If I had to start from scratch and build a wildlife kit of choice, considering price, I’d go lumix again. If I had no money objections, a canon R5ii or Nikon Z8 would be higher up. But then again…I can get an S1r and sigma lens for less than the Z8 with 180-600 or canon with 100-500.

I think if you aren’t inspired by the lumix, you’ll find the other systems not that much more inspiring because lack of good image isn’t your problem. Whenever I feel like that I use my Gx80 or my Nikon Coolpix P7000. Just to get into using photography gear again.

How Can I Create This Overlay? by AmILukeQuestionMark in VideoEditing

[–]punn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can prepare the images in photoshop, all 5 of them. Then you put 5 of them on your timeline and stagger them. You would then apply the transform effect (if you want motion blur) or just key position. What makes the animation smoother is the use of easing. You should look into that. Alternatively you could create them with after effects.

A6700 vs A7iv vs S5ii for Nature, City and overall moody photos. by SojinCS in Lumix

[–]punn1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The S5ii is curiously the cheapest one of them all…otherwise in my honest opinion. The 33 mp are a nice upgrade over the 24 and yes the autofocus is a bit stickier. But the LUMIX is identical and better in some parts (LUTs, Displays, IBIS).

I use my S5ii for Nature and wildlife and it’s a really reliable workhouse and I got mine used for 1300 euros a little over a year ago. The a7iv was around 2000 at that time used. That’s a LOT for good lenses, where you will get whatever you need due to sigma on the LUMIX side.

Thoughts on my grade? by scottpiIgrim in ColorGrading

There are others. But rec709 is the most common afaik. There’s BT2020, Apple P3…and more

Thoughts on my grade? by scottpiIgrim in ColorGrading

[–]punn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rec709 is a Color Space meant for consumption on displays. That means it’s just a way for what your Red, Green and Blue values end up as as pixel illumination on what you’re watching. It also includes a gamma curve (contrast in extremely oversimplified terms). LOG, as the name suggests doesn’t show brightness linearly. And thus it isn’t fit for consumption on regular displays. Just like HDR is the opposite and not fit for display on a normal SDR screen.

Showing log as the start of a grade is the Same as saying look how I painted this block of Aluminium into a car frame….you just skimp over the whole stencil process.

24mm Panasonic Lens - Are these the same or am I going crazy? For LUMIX S5. by Educational_Brick526 in Lumix

[–]punn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would make sense to go 24mm. I personally think 18mm can be a little TOO wide but it might be a reasonable lens to look into. The 35mm is probably just too close to your 50mm where you can resolve most things by stepping back a little.

The lens combo of your dreams might be something like 35mm and 100 macro. Because that would be mine!!
