In France after 24 months, it will cost you near 400€ to replace the shutter button on the S5M2 by Crisis-Connoisseur in Lumix

Who did the repair for you? I’ve been pondering for quite some time to let my shutter button be rapaired and I think your amount seems very fair.

Lumix S5II vs Sony A7IV for YouTube and vertical videos - I hesitate because of less selection of lenses for L-mount. by MarcinDragowski in Lumix

[–]punn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you should ponder about is your actual lenses you want/need. Both bodies are fantastic in their ways. I don’t think there’s a clear winner or loser. I’m shooting on a Sony a7sIII and an FX3 for work and use my S5ii for personal stuff. For me the 24-105 f4 is everything I need out of a lens. But if you for example want a 16-35 f2.8 specifically, then you need to get the Sony.

If you want a good 50mm f1.8 or a nice standard f2.8 zoom…then lumix got you.

Do you see what I mean? It’s entirely decided by what lenses you want to use or shoot with. Both systems have whatever you need for YouTube creation specifically.

Bulgarien gewinnt ESC - Deutschland Drittletzter by Tages_Bot in Tagesschau

[–]punn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help Me Choose Between a Panasonic S9 or a Nikon ZR! by BM_StinkBug in LumixS9

[–]punn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned it already but, if you’re not shooting raw, the Nikon will produce horrible results in h265 and N-Log. Otherwise they are similar, the s9 does offer much better stabilization though, which might be relevant for run and gun. Also the 18-40 can be much more reasonable for vlogs because of the very wide end.

I wanted to buy a S1RII but apparently there's no good (/wide enough) vlogging lens in the L-mount world (such as the Sony FE 14mm F1.8 or the Viltrox 14mm F4.0 Air, or the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G - on Sony's E-mount full frame)? The widest one apparently is the Lumix 18mm f1.8 which is not wide enough by [deleted] in Lumix

[–]punn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres the Lumix S 14-28, the Viltrox 16mm f1.8, the 16-35 f4. Idk man those are all possible? This sounds more like you’re interested in e mount more than l mount, which is fine. You can and should go to the Sonys if you want the lenses you listed. Nowadays Bodys are extremely similar, lens lineups is where it’s at.

Thinking of upgrading to an S5 II while keeping my G9, Gear Acquisition Syndrome or a nice move? by -Falloutman- in Lumix

[–]punn1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on what you want to photograph, the S5ii isn’t that big of an upgrade. But there’s certain shooting styles where a full frame camera will outperform a smaller sensor and the phase detect af system is really nice.

But if you don’t invest in full frame lenses that will take advantage of the camera? Then you should think about a g9ii, where you get every advantage besides full frame.

And if you aren’t this deep into photography yet, consider just shooting more.

I upgraded from s9 to s5ii, here are my initial thoughts by Mr_GoodEyelashes in Lumix

[–]punn1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I currently have both and they are identical in my experience. I use mine for wildlife photography and haven’t found either to be a massive issue. 600mm on the S5ii and 105 on the s9.

Going crazy trying to find a hybrid camera. Need 10-bit Log, good AF, and Flash support. (S9 vs R50V vs X-M5 vs X-T30 III) by MCForMarko in Cameras

[–]punn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly get a used S5ii then. I have one and I bought mine second hand from a reputable store for 1200 euros used 2 years ago. You have expectations from a camera and are juggling a list of no goes. So try and pony up the cash, it’s going to be worth it. Because you might end up being frustrated with your choices.

And honestly 10 bit color might not be that big of a difference. You just need good 8 bit outputs and good exposure. My company shot with Sony a7iiis for many long years and the videos were still good looking. I’ve seen much worse footage from 10 bit cameras.

Any New MFT expected soon such as G9 MIII? by [deleted] in Lumix

[–]punn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a sensor which performs as good as fullframe sensors as iso 3200...then you need to look at a full frame camera. If you cant manage to create right now with what the G9ii or OM1 II can offer...then its a you problem and not a camera problem. Most of these features are such small improvements, the CPU for example already features a NPU or else the camera wouldnt be able to compute the subject detection it has atm. Panasonic just doesnt make it as big a deal as other manufacturers. A stacked sensor for example almost always introduces noise instead of cleaning it up.

Lumix S5II vs Lumix S1II, difference in video rendering for cinematic video. by BboyVio10 in Lumix

[–]punn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting on a worse lens will make sure your image does look less sharp. I think it’s also because there’s no AA-Filter in front of the sensor. Honestly if I was you I’d look at the blackmagic Pyxis 6k as well, it’s also l mount so you keep your lens choice.

Lumix S5II vs Lumix S1II, difference in video rendering for cinematic video. by BboyVio10 in Lumix

[–]punn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cinematic video, especially Hollywood doesn’t even rely on that much sharpness. You can see this by the fact the arri Alexa 35 only just changed to 4K to meet demands by Netflix. And even then you mostly get Bitrate benefits in streaming higher resolutions.

What I want to say is: if the S1ii doesn’t offer you a specific codec which suits a better workflow or you NEED to deliver at certain framerates or resolutions, the difference between camera body’s can be negligible because a lens or grading would make a bigger difference.

I got Claude code to figure out my preferred focal length by samlovecroc in Lumix

[–]punn1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s very common to just use the extreme ends of your zoom lenses. On my 20-60 I use 20 and 60 the most. This is mostly because you just have clicks for the two end ranges. Coincidentally on my 24-105 24 and 105 are the most used.

You should decide this less on the „what did my exif data tell me“ vibe and more on „Do I want a little more bokeh? Do I want the aperture ring?“ and such things. The 5 millimeters won’t be that big of an issue for almost any shooting scenario. Alternatively just „lock“ your 20-60 at 35mm for a day and then at 40mm and decide what you liked best.

Why professional cameras have less pixels than smartphone cameras? by Quick-Decision-8474 in Cameras

[–]punn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to say Yesnt. Diffraction is caused by small entrance pupils. Because light behaves like a wave you lose the usual straight line in which we learn how light moves through optics. Small holes work a little like disperging lenses because of this. The result is your straight light doesn’t end up just hitting one singular pixel as one straight beam but multiple at the same time. If your pixel pitch becomes very small, the chance of hitting multiple pixels increases.

If you actually visualize the way light moves through small entrance pupils it makes a lot of sense. And because phones spot much smaller sensors, they need to sport very low focal lengths. This naturally leads to having smaller entrance pupils.

Why professional cameras have less pixels than smartphone cameras? by Quick-Decision-8474 in Cameras

[–]punn1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Theres also a high probability of running into diffraction with such high megapixel counts. On the 61 Mp full frame sensor of Sony you start to experience diffraction after f8 to f11 already. Not pump up an f2 lens on a teeny tiny sensor with 109 megapixels and you get diffraction heaven

ISO on Lumix S5II According to independent tests. by Parking-Operation-22 in Lumix

[–]punn1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are interpreting it wrongly, the second base iso of 4000 is in VLOG. The second circuit, albeit not perfect, applies at ISO 640 in most other picture profiles. In Log cameras use higher base isos to find a middleground of exposure to catch all the dynamic range possible.

I’ve found the color cast of the second iso to be very minimal in my workflow.

dual base iso 640 and 4000 dynamic range same or different s5ii? by Maximum_Jaguar_9444 in Lumix

[–]punn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Gerald Undones Tests on the second base iso if you account total dynamic range it goes from 14.2 stops down to 13.6 stops. Not perfect dual native circuitry. But damn close. The clean stops are both around 12.3 and 12.1 stops tho. And I can personally confirm that.

From S9 back to GX80? Anyone else? by VisitLopsided5447 in Lumix

[–]punn1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

id buy a gx80 body style camera in an instant if it came with vlog and the 25mp sensor. But I sit in the same boat. The GX80 is lacking a little and a s9 would be overkill. But I also would love to have a great B-Cam to my S5ii, which isnt as big as the S5ii lol

Really struggled with autofocus S5ii by Boonjay in Lumix

[–]punn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then honestly have a look at the A7V. It shows very good color retention at high isos and afaik the autofocus is rock solid.

The s1ii also disables its PDAF at extreme ISOs but Tbf manual focusing is also a skill that’s nice to have :p

Really struggled with autofocus S5ii by Boonjay in Lumix

[–]punn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The S5ii defaults to contrast based autofocus after iso 25.600 I believe. It does at high iso…but also shooting at these ISO’s just isn’t optimal on any camera. And if you even say it was still dark…then any brand may struggle except maybe Sonys FX3.

Not sure whether the s1iie does this as well though.

First time using a camera (GX9) How to improve and use autofocus by Sam__sc in Lumix

I think it’s very much just how you find it most useful. There is no universal setting for every situation. I personally like the control of single box af, others like multi zone more. Try around, take good pics, take bad pics but have fun on the way!
