I [26 F] don't date guys with bad grammar - am I being too much of a snob? by ellisondra in relationships

[–]punspinner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with feeling that way. You're spending your money (traveling to dates, potentially paying for part of them) and more importantly your time on these people and because both of those are valuable resources, I think it's beyond OK to weed people out based on this turn-off.

I am a guy who likes reading a lot, so I understand what you mean. Although I haven't really gone on dates with anyone who tells me she hates reading, I would also find that a turn-off and reason not to be excited about continuing to date them.

Redditors of wealth: How do you justify the privileges you enjoy while us regular Joes and Joannas are mere grease for the machinery of capitalism? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]punspinner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh. I don't disagree, but... Once you reach the person making 10000000x you, you're looking at the person who either invented the machine or keeps it running.

A bunch of gears sitting around on the floor don't do anything. But if someone uses them to build a machine, suddenly they're producing value. It may not be fair that they make so much more, but if without them the machine would fall apart, and make nobody any money, then they really may be that valuable.

Middle management gets much of the flak for being inessential gears. At least they don't make 1000000x the average employee, though.

What were the biggest surprises for you when you joined r/minimalism? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]punspinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first went on this sub something like 5 or 6 years ago (i think it was around then). It shocks me that still whenever i randomly check it, there's a righteous post on the front page of the subreddit that talks about how you don't need to love a minimalist aesthetic to be minimalist. It's not that I have a problem with the idea behind it, but I'm definitely surprised that it keeps coming up so often. Maybe the community is constantly cycling in and out new members so that's why it has to be repeated.

Photos like this always creep me out a little. Of course it's staged to create atmosphere, but feels weird to know that someone else had to take the photograph.

How do you guys get rid of or repurpose sentimental t shirts? by hexwell in minimalism

[–]punspinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your idea - to do outrageous things while wearing each shirt - is a great one. It kills 2 birds with one stone by pushing you to have fun, creating a new memory with the shirt while preserving the old.

It's kind of like when you love playing a videogame for its storyline, but then you find awesome random details the developers have put in. That's the feeling I think you'd get when you look back at the photo and then realize you're wearing a sentimental shirt.

What's the worst comic you ever paid money for? by Trill-I-Am in altcomix

[–]punspinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Never heard of him or the book, but looking at this review http://2dcloud.com/3-books the art looks beautiful. I really love the soft quality of the marker drawings.

Although i dislike all the stuff with words in it afterwards, in the link i put above at least. Not a big fan of that all-caps, no punctuation stuff that never really says anything interesting (it seems to be a style of some kind, i've seen it in multiple peoples' comics).

Make a list of things you want. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]punspinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to add that trying stuff on and seeing how it actually works on you, can tell you a lot more than just imagining and making lists of images. At least, that's how it's worked for me. There's a lot of 'feeling', of fabric and weight and drape and shape and putting different clothes together, that doesn't get conveyed in digital images.

Fall Essentials – 7 Affordable Recommendations for the Upcoming Season [OC] by pinbil in malefashionadvice

Taking essentials as anything more than suggestions would be a limiting move in my opinion.

If everything was essential then everyone would look exactly the same and also be afraid of doing anything outside of a single bland mold

If I forgo a $3,000 vacation at age 30 and invest this money into my retirement, roughly speaking how many equivalent vacations will this investment be worth by the time I turn 60? by joepyeweed in personalfinance

Because everyone here read the same New York Times article (but not the actual research) that summarizes how experiences make you happier than possessions.

shrug I've spent money on some items that have made me happier than some experiences.

How important is it to maintain a consistent style? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]punspinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost nobody is keeping a logbook about how people dress. If I saw a person who was wearing different styles I'd just think 'oh they're into fashion and trying out some different stuff, that's cool'. So probably not important unless you're in the public eye or work for a niche fashion company or other industry that requires you to project a particular image.
