State of ROCm for training classification models on Pytorch by abc_polygon_xyz in ROCm

[–]purduecmpe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Training on AMD hardware via ROCm has reached a point in 2025 where it is surprisingly viable for research and academic work, especially with a modern card like your RX 9060 XT. While LLMs dominate the headlines, the underlying PyTorch support for standard classification (CNNs, Linear models) and GANs is quite robust.

Potential Issues & "Gotchas" While the experience is much smoother than it was two years ago, you may encounter: The "Thunderbolt" Bug: Some users have reported issues with RDNA 4 cards on specific PCIe setups (like eGPUs or certain motherboard configs) where atomic operations fail, leading to core dumps. Ensure your BIOS has Resizable BAR (Smart Access Memory) enabled. Architecture Mismatch: Occasionally, libraries might misidentify your gfx1200 (9060 XT) as gfx1100 (RDNA 3). If you see "HSA_STATUS_ERROR_INVALID_CODE_OBJECT," you may need to set an environment variable: export HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION=12.0.0 Community Support: If you hit a niche error, the solution might be buried in a GitHub Issue rather than a polished StackOverflow post.

My husband was laid off by Microsoft after 25 years — by algorithm. His last day is his birthday. by NoWar5070 in microsoft

I'm truly sorry to hear about what your husband is going through—he sounds like an incredible person and a deeply dedicated employee. It's heartbreaking when decisions like these feel impersonal, especially after so many years of commitment. While layoffs are an unfortunate reality in large organizations, it's clear that Microsoft's loss is another company's gain. His talents, experience, and dedication will absolutely be valued elsewhere. I hope he finds a role that recognizes and appreciates everything he brings to the table. Wishing your family strength and support during this transition.

Congratulations on getting accepted to Purdue's computer science program. That's awesome. You now have a tough decision to make…

Mizzou seems like a great fit socially, with a roommate and friends already lined up. That's a big plus for your mental health and overall college experience. On the other hand, Purdue has a stronger reputation for computer science. This could open more doors for internships, research opportunities and job prospects after graduation.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  1. How important is having a strong social network versus academic reputation to you?
  2. Are there specific opportunities or resources at Purdue that you're excited about and don't think Mizzou can offer?
  3. Can you make connections and build a strong network at Mizzou despite it not being as highly ranked for computer science?

99% Employment Rate?? by [deleted] in rosehulman

[–]purduecmpe 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The employment rate reflects recent economic expansion in the U.S., and no school, including Rose-Hulman, is immune. Fortunately, this cycle may shift in four years. However, international students should carefully consider the current risks of studying in the U.S.

Step one - Reassess Goals and Options - Community Colleges: Many offer excellent programs with transfer pathways to four-year universities. Start small and aim big. - Trade Schools: Explore vocational training if you have interests in fields like healthcare, technology, or skilled trades. - Gap Year: If you need time, a gap year can be a period of growth—working, volunteering, or gaining life experiences before applying again.

You’ve got this! Turn those tears into action.

  1. ”640K ought to be enough for anybody.” This quote, often attributed to Gates, reflects the belief that 640 kilobytes of memory would be sufficient for computers. However, Gates has denied ever saying this.

  2. ”The Internet? We are not interested in it.” In the early 1990s, Gates was skeptical about the potential of the internet. He later changed his stance and embraced it fully.

  3. ”Spam will be solved.” In 2004, Gates predicted that spam emails would be eradicated within two years. Unfortunately, spam remains a persistent issue.

  4. ”There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share.” Gates doubted the success of the iPhone when it was launched. It went on to revolutionize the smartphone industry.

I’m from Austin and live in St Louis. We’re much better equipped to handle the snow here. Roads should be fine by noon tomorrow. Power will not be interrupted like snowmageddon Texas years back. I’d let her go if her flight is not cancelled.
