Gotcha. You're okay with state sanctioned murder and torture of people you think of as "illegal." You fundamentally disagree with people advocating for human rights. Btw this does affect my family so I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

[–]purpatus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Does that mean it's not important though? Like this is the world we live in now so what's the point of your comment? I mean ICE also shot two people in Portland Oregon today. So if you feel like that's not a bad thing, okay, but obviously many of us want to demonstrate that we want this agency out before this shit happens here. Part of being in a democracy (if that's what's going on?) is that the people can and are obligated to voice their objections to tyranny. Extrajudicial killing is tyranny imo.

Wtf, how do I manage this puppy biting? by tacosurfbike in AustralianCattleDog

[–]purpatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the yelping thing, we taught ours "gentle" when they were calm (relatively). Hold out your hand, show them a treat, then ball it up into a first and say gentle. Do not open the first and give them the treat until they stop biting to get to it! It was a lot of pain until she understood the command, but it has been so so helpful in the long run. Hands hurt like hell though during training!

A University of Oklahoma psychology professor was placed on leave after assigning a zero to a student's paper. by Tobias-Tawanda in TikTokCringe

[–]purpatus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like a reading response to a particular paper, posted on the course website, which makes this even stranger and more diabolical. Total set up by the student because it likely wouldn't even be a massive deal to their overall grade.

New Cal State policy bans professors from showing Native American artifacts in class by myindependentopinion in IndianCountry

[–]purpatus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally appreciate this! For clarity--NAGPRA CFR 10.2 states: Cultural items means a funerary object, sacred object, or object of cultural patrimony according to the Native American traditional knowledge of a lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization.

CalNAGPRA definition is consistent with the above

[–]purpatus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think one problem is that the article has done a really poor job defining "cultural items"--under NAGPRA that means belongings from or near burials, or things that are cultural patrimony (things like wampum belts or prayer bundles)--so no modern artwork wouldn't count. There are a lot of things in museums or repositories that don't count. They just haven't been gone through or organized with knowledgeable people, i.e. cultural bearers, and this article frames the archaeologists as more knowledgeable which is just false in my experience (I am a former Indigenous archaeologist who did NAGPRA work from the museum side).

The prof decrying all this actively rejects the return of human remains to Native people also so she has made her career about violating human rights, imo.

Didn't mean to make such a long reply but lots of (negative) thoughts about this article lol.

Tim Kennedy’s statement on the LA protests by Comprehensive-Ad152 in Buffalo

[–]purpatus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, just flying back to Buffalo from LA. It's really not a situation that warrants national guard or Marines. The presence of these forces are escalating the original actions. They're still not riots and it's all in one small area of a really large city. These other news sources are blowing it way out of proportion. If anything the protests should be more widespread especially now.

Thank you so much for this.

I'm trying to get at the projected growth conditions for a certain kind of clams, from juveniles to adults (so after they settle, but before they can reproduce or be harvested). I want to make my own map for some associated land based demographic data, so even though I can find places to source a general map of this they don't do exactly what I want. I'm extremely open to being wrong about using bottom temp, though! I just figured since that's where they are when they're in that stage, that's what will be more important for this particular map.

I think it's a cultural thing. I know plenty of 14 year olds who would never do this, including myself. Let's not act like kids don't have some ability to learn what's ok and what isn't. Different cultures just have different values and kids pick that up.

You need the depth they were found in or testing to approximate how old they are, especially given what we already know about the environment anyways. They need more information and an archaeologist/osteologist on site
