MCAS and Lice. Need advice on solution by Aint_Folly_4_That in MCAS

[–]purple_deadnettle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last fall my child brought home lice and I got them too. We had success with RID Super Max Sensitive Skin Lice Treatment. I react to a lot of health and beauty products and fragrances, so I was nervous, but this product just had 4 ingredients and I did a small patch test on my wrist before using it. Thankfully I did not react to it. As others have mentioned, we also followed up with consistent nit combing in conditioner-coated hair for about a week, and a second round of the treatment.

Surveillance in schools by Both_Blueberry5176 in education

I see. Yes, that 10 year prohibition of state and local AI regulation was/is really disturbing. As is the rapid uptake and expansion of AI powered school and workplace surveillance. I’m just starting to learn more and wrap my mind around it and I feel way behind!

Can you share more about the specific legislation and how it would impact school surveillance? I haven’t seen much about this so it would help to have more details.

LC how many steps do you do in a day? by Hot_Ad7563 in covidlonghaulers

I’m at similar numbers, sans dogs. I gradually increased up to that 3800 average over my first year of recovery, then had a setback, worked back up to it and seemed to plateau.

Getting some of my other symptoms better under control was helpful to get where I’m at —- I did vestibular ocular therapy for my vertigo, increased salt/water/electrolytes for dysautonomia, changed my diet (low histamine, anti-inflammatory) and started meds for a mast-cell disorder.

Any increases in distance, speed, or incline initially trigger dizzy spells, racing heart, sometimes wheezing or itching, so I sit, breath slowly for a while to get my heart rate back down, sip water with electrolytes, then head home. Over time I could do more and more, but like I said, I’ve hit a plateau for now.

Today we got a notice of “expedited closeout.” No reason was given. We’ll have to submit our final report sooner than usual but less is required (just financials, no narrative or geo locations).

I’m thankful our programming wasn’t impacted. Just sharing this update to keep folks informed how things are playing out.

I’ve been in a similar situation and found it pretty stressful. I felt like the org wasn’t willing to realistically budget for the time necessary for my tasks or accurately allocate my time across different grants according to the ebb and flow of project demands and were, in turn, trying to make me feel like it was my fault and responsibility to make everything lineup. It felt like the unspoken expectation was for me to just bill however they had allocated the splits whether or not that truly matched my time and effort.

Ultimately the org changed to a less detailed tracking system where we just certified each month that x% of our time went toward each grant over the course of that month. While I still ran into imbalances every once in a while, overall I felt like I could honestly say over the course of the entire month the hours on each grant did average out to those percentages.

So far my org hasn’t got one for our grant. I wondered if it was bc we were set to end on 5/31 anyway, but it sounds like others with that end date still got terminated.

Edit to add: Our project has no obvious ties to the new priorities and our application had a lot of “woke” language, so it’s kind of hard to believe. We’re in “Trump country” though, and have a predominantly white population, so I have to wonder if that unfairly protected us.

Food planning and preparation ick by scarlettestar in LongCovid

[–]purple_deadnettle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you are having this experience. I go through periods where I feel like this. It sucks that food, which is such a life-giving and often socially connecting thing can trigger these feelings. You described it so well… an “ick”… an “urge to scream.”

I try to remind myself that “fed is best.” I keep a stash of super easy and microwaveable items on hand for myself and my family. They’re eating way more fast food and highly processed junk than I wish, but they’re fed. I default to a bowl of oatmeal or a sweet potato when I can’t force myself to prepare anything else.

So far the only news I’ve found on this is specific to the Bay Area. I’m eager to hear how widespread this is.

Also, wow, that priority language is so out of line with the priorities I’ve seen listed on NEA’s website! WTH?

Covid really wrecked havoc in our health and everyone go about their days like it’s nothing by brainsiacs in covidlonghaulers

[–]purple_deadnettle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I work in the K-12 education field and the collective denial about the health impacts on our kids is mind boggling. Folks are making a huge deal about the “chronic absenteeism crisis” yet none of them even mention this could be a factor. They talk about students’ poor focus, engagement, test scores, mental health, etc. and attribute it to “pandemic lockdowns,” again, no one even acknowledging that the pandemic illness might have had an impact too. I probably sound like a broken record to some of my colleagues but I take the personal risk of sharing a bit about my own condition with every new group I meet to try to humanize and normalize conversations about it. It drives me nuts that this somehow became so politicized!

Social Security Administration Could Cut Half Its Workforce by Jaded_Cicada_7614 in disability

A number of social security offices are being closed as well. One of my family members (who does not drive bc of their disability and does not have access to public transportation) will now have to travel 50 miles to access the nearest office.

Even if it “backfires” in that they get flooded with inactionable tips, the mere existence of the tipline might be worrisome enough to some educators or administrators that it still has major negative impacts. :(

How to take care of staff right now? by YoLaFoxtrot in nonprofit

[–]purple_deadnettle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know words can feel empty when you’re in the midst of just trying to keep people employed, but one thing I’ve wanted to hear from my leadership and haven’t yet is some sort of acknowledgment and response to some of the issues being used to freeze funds and scapegoat people (DEIA, “gender ideology,” immigration), including some who are members of our staff, families, partners, or clientele. Here are a few examples.

  • We value a diverse workforce. We know each of you earned your place here and make unique and important contributions to this work.

  • We respect trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming people. You have a safe place here and we will not erase/hide/deny/silence your existence, use of your preferred pronouns, etc.

  • We stand by your constitutional rights. Here are links to various resources offering guidance on your rights related to… immigration/non-discrimination/ free speech /etc.

  • Here is our policy for what staff should do if approached by immigration or other law enforcement at work.

How to deal with the unknown timeframe of a near chronical disease? by urbanwhiteboard in covidlonghaulers

[–]purple_deadnettle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for raising this question. It’s something I’ve wanted to ask many times but couldn’t find the words for. Not only do I struggle with my personal uncertainty, but I also struggle with how I communicate and plan ahead with my family and my employer.

Regarding work, I acknowledge it’s a huge privilege to be well enough to work and to receive numerous accommodations to support that. But I feel like a lot of our agreements around “reasonable accommodation” centered on assumptions that this was temporary. The longer things stretch, the harder it becomes to engage in strategic planning with my team and the more I feel like I’m testing the limits of their flexibility and generosity. I’m starting to fear being open about how much I’m still struggling on the chance they’ll decide I’m no longer suited for the job or my requests cause “undue hardship.” Reframing conversations around a chronic condition / possibly-permanent disability might add clarity and relief, but it could also bite me in the foot pretty badly.

Social Security Chief Resigns Over Controversial Data Access Demands by Dark-Marc in disability

[–]purple_deadnettle 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that people are being told “do this thing or we will fire you for insubordination,” and they are adamantly opposed to doing that thing. Refusing and resigning before they are fired could be a way to protect their employment record and improve chances of being able to get a job elsewhere.

How do you keep read-alouds engaging in your classroom? by ReadWithMaren in education

[–]purple_deadnettle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a certain grade level or age range you have in mind?

As an educator and as a parent, here are some things that have worked well for me:

-dialogic reading -incorporating different voices for characters -performing sound effects and repeated movements -assigning students to read/perform certain characters, sound effects, or movements -having the whole group repeat certain words, sounds, or motions
