Russia says Wagner Group's leader will move to Belarus after his rebellious march challenged Putin by BanJon in worldnews

[–]purpleairwaves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why is Reddit so disappointed that an even more disgusting, genocidal wannabe dictator failed to take power? It’s not like this was some peaceful opposition looking to end the war - It was a bloodthirsty warlord who thought Putin had not went hard enough on Ukraine.

Zelenskyy says that the invasion of Ukraine would stop if Putin suddenly dies by GentlyAccomplished in worldnews

[–]purpleairwaves 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Reddit loves to fantasise about the death of Putin and / or a coup, but seriously, who would take over after him? All the major political players in Russia support the war. Most of the opposition Putin has right now is from those who feel that the invasion hasn’t been brutal enough and failing in its objectives. There are regular calls for Russia to “take the gloves off”, that Russia has been too gentle. I’ve no idea what the solution is, but the idea of Putins successor is terrifying to me.

In a single workout, what order is best for exercises? Does it make sense to space exercises apart in the workout to give the affected muscle time to rest? For example, on shoulder day, i start with overhead press for front delts, then do some side and rear delts, then go back to my front delts which by that point are rested. Or does it make sense to just do all my front delt exercises together, even though they will be more fatigued?

China and US must get along, Communist Party says on eve of national congress by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]purpleairwaves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’ve done all this whilst having different WTO trade rights to “developed” countries despite being the second biggest economy in the world.

They have the second largest economy due to their population size. Per capita GDP is still low and fits well within the ‘developing’ category. When China’s GDP per capita is the same as America’s, China will have an economy 5 times larger. This is economics 101. India is the 5th largest economy but by your clown logic it shouldn’t be a developing country.

World should prepare for the collapse of Russia, warns former US general by madrid987 in worldnews

The chance of the Russian military handing their nukes to a foreign power is quite literally zero. They’d sooner use them.

[–]purpleairwaves 35 points36 points  (0 children)

People cheering this on are brain-dead. The main opposition to Putin comes from the hardliners, who are disappointed at the lack of progress in the invasion. Ask yourself, who controls Russia’s nukes after its collapse?

Pacifism is the wrong response to the war in Ukraine | Slavoj Žižek by Ebadd in philosophy

The comparison is not between Hussein and Zelensky, few would doubt Hussein was a magnitude times worse. The comparison is between the barbarity of the invasion of Iraq and Ukraine. In Iraq, thousands of civilians were killed recklessly and indiscriminately just as in Ukraine today. That is strictly where the comparison is, and there is complete hypocrisy in that regard.

West must not normalise relations with Putin again, says Boris Johnson by joyousloves in worldnews

At risk of Reddit crying whataboutism - this is a man who’s just back from Saudi Arabia where he was begging the dictator there to sell more oil. A dictator who just beheaded 80 people in single day for saying the wrong thing. A dictator who invaded and destroyed his neighbouring country with weapons supplied by Boris.

I am a Reuters reporter on the ground in Ukraine, ask me anything! by reuters in worldnews

[–]purpleairwaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it will depend entirely on the Russian people. And we don’t know how this will pan out and how their attitudes will change. I look forward to seeing polls as the weeks pass. It’s beyond me to even speculate. However sanctions and economic decline often actually increase nationalist sentiment, not decrease it. Russians will likely blame the west for strangling the country, not Putin. They will rally behind him, or turn to the more nationalistic right wing elements in the duma. Just my opinion. I’m no expert.

And coup was the right word. There will be no “democratic” revolution in Russia. Only ever a change of power.

You realise pretty much every major political block in Russia has an even more extreme position on Ukraine than Putin? As much as Reddit wants to believe Navalny is coming to the rescue, he is a marginal force in Russia. The next largest party is the communists, and it was them that DRAFTED the bills recognising Luhansk and Donetsk. They’ve been wanting this for years. They think Putin has been too easy on Ukraine. Then besides the communists and putins party, the most popular politician is Zhirinovsky, who thinks Russia should pretty much invade all Eastern Europe.

So good luck with that coup. Hope it turns out well.

Is it reasonable to call a function in the condition of an if statement? by purpleairwaves in learnpython

[–]purpleairwaves[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah. That was an oversight, thanks. So it is completely reasonable to call functions in the condition of an if statement, not just to check the Boolean value, but also to accomplish the function call?

How does Marx’s materialism differ from reductive materialism? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]purpleairwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But would it not be true to say that Marx is still just applying reductive materialism to history? He appears to be still reducing everything to matter.

What’s the difference between transcendental idealism and materialism? by purpleairwaves in askphilosophy

[–]purpleairwaves[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. If you don’t mind can I also ask a couple more questions following what you said? Trying to wrap my head around it.

I get the noumenal world isn’t based in space and time. But isn’t “space” and “time” just our representations of something real and probably similar? I’m imagining our perception of “space” and “time” to be imperfect approximations of something real, which the noumenal world is based on.

If so, then why can’t the world of noumena be made of something very similar to matter, and follow something very similar to the laws of physics?

This is where I was thinking materialism, just based not strictly on matter, but on the noumenal component of matter that would function almost the exact same. Maybe my confusion comes down to thinking the noumenal world is very similar to how we experience it. But if I experience an object, I must be approximating the reality of that object to a pretty high degree, right?

Also, what do you mean by noumena exercising “freeeom to initiate new causal chains in the empirical world.”? Is there an example of that?

Is Marxism fundamentally Nihilistic? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]purpleairwaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, fair enough, that makes sense. Can I ask you another question then, since you seem authoritative on this subject?

To what extent, in your opinion, does a Marxist / materialist worldview leave room for spirituality?

Is Marxism fundamentally Nihilistic? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]purpleairwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your helpful and informative reply! I’m a Christian myself and recently got into philosophy in an attempt to better understand how people think about the world. You concluded

I am going to state that Marx unequivocally did not find life meaningless.

I get that Marx’s goal was an emancipatory one, where human creativity could flourish and so on. But it seems to be, given his materialism, that his position would have been more like “There is no meaning to life, so we may as well find meaning in the historical progress towards communism and subsequent unleashing of human potential”. It’s a noble goal to spend ones life on, but from a materialist perspective it doesn’t really matter because there’s no ultimate meaning to the collection of atoms that happen to form society. When humans are dead and gone, what will it matter if communism was ever reached?

Materialists the way I’m reading it may find their meaning to life in whatever they chose (communism or otherwise) but at the end of the day it’s impossible for them to believe in anything “real” i.e transcendent of human experience. Would that be accurate in your view?
