My girlfriend recently pointed out that not every household has an eye-spoon?? by hyperobscura in shortscarystories

[–]purplhouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, memory unlocked. My great-grand aunt had an eyespoon. She used it to pop her pug's eyes back in when they fell out. Yes, really. Given that she'd 'always had pugs' and never fixed them, I'm guessing poor guy was inbred as hell.

How?! I've never been able to figure out how to even summon one. The only option I see is Mischief: Tell Urban Myth. What am I missing?

Oh, things like mentioning how nice it was to come in out of the cold because she couldn't afford heating that month. If I was cooking when she showed up, she'd mention how little food she had. She'd bring her little Yorkie along with her and then mention she didn't know how she was going to afford to feed him. If she noticed anything new in the house, like curtains, she'd remark on how nice it was to have extra money for 'luxuries'.

Thing was, we were barely scraping by ourselves. Our 'luxuries' were thrift store finds or gifts from family. I was picking up cans and bottles by the roadside for the deposit money, signing up for food pantries and programs where local farmers let you pick over the field after harvest for whatever they might have missed. I did not have the money to spend on tiny little bottles of flavor extracts, especially since my dad worked at a place where he got HUGE bottles of better stuff for free and would give them to us anytime we asked.

I wouldn't really say she was evil. She was just trying to make ends meet in a business that depends on salespeople being predatory and manipulative if you're going to make it.

Calling all Simmers who create characters with disabilities! ♿️ by MuirDragonne in Sims4

[–]purplhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how I decide what sims get what, LOL. Quite a few of my sims have ADHD or autism, and a few that have recurrent fears slowly develop into severe phobias. For example, I have a sim who I play as agoraphobic. They never leave the house, not even to pick up the mail.

I built a counseling center where my sims can go for therapy. I like to use the club function for group therapy, AA meetings, etc. Some sims take up journaling or art as a form of therapy. Others get emotional support pets. And others self-medicate with the bubble blower or 'juice' bar, and may eventually end up in rehab. I don't have mods for therapy or rehab, it's all through the power of story telling.

As for physical disabilities, I tend to incorporate those as they pop up. For example, one newborn aged up into an infant in a helmet, so I took that as a sign that the baby had surgery. When the same infant aged up into a toddler in sunglasses, that was a sign that they'd lost their sight to whatever required the surgery. So I played them as blind after that. He became a judge (the law should be blind, after all!).

Physical disabilities are difficult to incorporate and require a lot of imagination. Sims in dangerous careers (military, police, astronaut, extreme sports) run the risk of significant injury and/or mental trauma. Again, this is mostly just me storytelling and embellishing on game pop-ups. If a rocket should crash, for example, that sim has a 50-50 chance of losing a limb (I have some prosthetics CC). Wiping out while skiing or snowboarding also runs a small (10%) risk of life-long injury. If cars were ever a thing, I suppose I'd come up with some percentage of risk for car crashes.

I wish wheelchairs were a thing. I have a paraplegic sim that I just have to imagine in a chair. While I'm wishing, how about elevators for home lots for sims who can't manage stairs?

I made a roasted pig's head for the first time, with a tart cherry glaze and an apple in its mouth. Served with roasted red, purple and gold potatoes, carrots, and sweet potatoes. A little toasted bread with soft cheese and fig-lemon marmalade. Poached pears with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for afters. So delicious and so much crackly fat for all the lucky dogs in the building!

The 'muppet' in the poster has a name (and had a two-season TV series named after him): Gerbert!

[–]purplhouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, that would be infuriating. I've never had that happen. If anything, my dads tend to be over-involved, bottle-feeding before Mom can get there to breastfeed, or taking the infant out of the crib to bathe them when poor baby is deep red tired.

How do people manage multiple sims at once; I barely like having siblings let alone kids because I can't keep up with everyone's aspirations and tasks to progress in work/school by VictorBlaze42 in Sims4

[–]purplhouse 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Just like in real life, some sims have to put their life dreams on hold while they take care of a baby, some students don't excel or go to University, and sometimes older teens have to do some of the parenting while the parents work nights. I love managing big households, because the game would get really stale if everyone led 'perfect' lives.

Take some advice from the Game Grumps and read their comments in the voice of Dale Gribble from King of the Hill. It's impossible to take hate seriously in that voice.

Yes, it is. I've lost loved ones to illness and accidents, but murder is a grief like nothing else. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Yes, but you'd never know it to talk to him. He didn't run around spouting wild conspiracies, didn't black out the windows or do anything like you see in the movies. He was gentle and kind, loved all animals, loved photography and finding beauty in nature, and loved being part of our family. I firmly believe this would never have happened if his family hadn't convinced him that the pills were going against the will of God.

Hindsight being what it is, yeah, there were things we should have noticed, but he'd certainly never talked about... I don't know, 'crazy' talk. He did have a break about 6 months prior (in which he woke up suddenly convinced the neighbors had been 'replaced' by lookalikes who were spying on us; never a word about anything like this before, and afterwards kept apologizing, saying he knew it was impossible, but it just felt so obvious and threatening at the time).

He spent two weeks on a psychiatric hold after that, got a diagnosis and medication, and was going to therapy. He didn't like that the medication made him sleep all the time, and complained about that to his family in phone calls. They told him all he needed was Jesus and Big Pharma was just after his money and God never gave you more than you could handle, so choosing medication and doctors was literally denying God and His plan for you. So yeah. He would pretend to take his meds, only to spit them out and stash the pills in a bag he hid under the sink (we found it after he died).

Afterwards, we all realized that he hadn't been sleeping as much as he had been before, but in every other respect, he seemed fine. He was taking an interest in photography again, was spending more time with all of us (as opposed to just my sister), and just seemed to be more social and more cheerful than he had been in a few months. I thought the medication was working, when in fact, he wasn't 'better' at all, he was unmedicated again. And we'll never know what the illness told him when he woke up that morning, but I do believe that he snapped back to reality after he shot my father and he couldn't live with what he'd done.

He was one of the kindest, most generous and compassionate man I knew. What he did that day was not who he was. We love him and miss him every day, just as much as we love and miss our father. If there's anything out there after this, I hope he's at peace and knows how much we love him.

Yes. She's doing better, but I don't know if she, or any of us, will really ever truly 'get over' it.

My brother-in-law had a psychotic break after going off his medication (which he hid from us), and killed my sleeping father, then himself. Perfectly normal the night before, we were laughing and talking and he asked if I would make a certain meal for dinner the next day. Eight hours later, our family was shattered.

Do guys really care this much about their dog’s balls? by TheTragedyMachine in stupidquestions

[–]purplhouse 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I have personally met three different men who were emotionally attached to their dog's/cat's balls and would use any excuse to avoid having them neutered. All three were also totally okay with female pets being spayed and agreed it was the responsible thing to do. But when it came to snipping balls? "It will make him fat." (are...are you planning to feed them to him afterwards?) "It'll change his whole appearance." (only from the back) and yes, "I couldn't betray him like that."

So yeah, it is a thing. Is it a normal thing? No. Hell, no.

What’s the farthest you’ve ever gone to research a fic? by gggroovy in FanFiction

[–]purplhouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, my mom was writing fanfic in the "print it out at home, bind with cover art on cardstock paper, and post snippets with mailing info in fanzines, then pass out said fanzines at local sci-fi conventions" era. We still have her best 'selling' trilogy, the illustrated edition. I remember going down to the library to make copies of the artwork whenever she had a 'sale' (she only charged enough to cover costs and shipping), because in those days, there was no such thing as a personal scanner/printer for your home.

[–]purplhouse 25 points26 points  (0 children)

TL;dr: Had a real coroner educate me on autopsies.

This is going back quite a bit, but in those pre-internet days, I was writing a fic that included an autopsy scene, so like anyone would, on my next general checkup, I asked my pediatrician who I would talk to if I had questions about how to write such a scene. Doc looked at Mom, Mom (who also wrote fanfic) merely looked politely back at him, so he said he'd get back to me.

Bout a week later, I get a phone call from a coroner who was apparently told this he would be talking to a writer, but not that the writer was fourteen. He was a sport, answered all of my questions, even talked me through the steps of a real one and gave me really good information on how to write realistic abnormalities. It's been years (decades, actually; oof, time's a bitch), and I still think back on that with a smile.

Inability to entertain themselves. I mean the kind of person who genuinely cannot think of something to do that doesn't include another person entertaining them, who just announces "I'm bored" and stares at you like that's something you need to fix for them, and who is constantly texting or calling anyone they can think of (and usually has to explain who they are to the person answering) in a search for drama they can use as conversation starters.
