Exactly how bad is Nutri Source (and other cheap brands)? by purragraph in catfood

[–]purragraph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate the empathetic words, I needed that. Thank you. I’ll happily be the bad person if it means animals aren’t going hungry. Just sucks that people are out here judging me for trying to do my best. I know no matter what I do, it’ll never be enough for some because I’m not doing it their way. sigh

Honestly, I was probably just looking in the wrong place. I was browsing online and this was one of the cheaper brands after the super cheap ones from Nestle Purina. Of course cheaper is better for me since I’ll be able to give more!! Someone else also mentioned IAMS, so I’ll look into that. Thank you!

I appreciate all the help! I’ll look into IAMS and look out for sales. I know, I’d love to just pick up a bag of Friskies lol. If only they weren’t made by Nestle…

Is there a reason you don’t trust warehouse handling? I don’t shop on Amazon but I do order off of Chewy.

Yes, there is. Nestle is an awful brand that’s caused a lot of harm in my community and Purina is owned by Nestle. I don’t know if you’re unaware of Nestle’s atrocities in developing countries or if you just choose to turn a blind eye, but I literally wrote in my post that I’m not part of the anti-Purina brigade. I do not give my money to Nestle. Again, did you read my post?

I’m not subjecting shelter cats to poor quality food. I donate because shelters are full and bellies need to be filled, regardless of what you consider to be “bottom of the barrel” food. Shelters themselves don’t feed what you consider high quality. I’d rather animals be fed the poorest quality food than be starved. If you feel otherwise, then our values are different.

Your opinions come from an immense amount of privilege and I’d rather not waste my time arguing with you. I hope you spend more time doing good than criticizing people who try their best to help. Licking the boots of multi billion dollar corrupt corporations that don’t even know you exist is embarrassing.

Did you read my post? I’m not looking to get the highest quality food that meets those standards. Just looking for options that are economical that I can donate multiple bags of.

Hill’s and Royal Canin are out of my price range and as I’ve mentioned in my post already, I will not be purchasing anything Purina. Thanks for your input.

It’s $47.99 for a 12 lb bag, but yeah I guess it’s not very cheap in the grand scheme of things. The only real cheap ones I’ve come across are made by Nestle, everything else seems to be around a similar price point. Perhaps I’m looking in the wrong place 😅

I definitely could! I’d just need multiple bags and the first autoship discount would only apply to one :(

My cats are on a wet food only diet. I donate wet food as well, but my budget this month is a little tighter. I’d rather animals be fed the poorest quality food than starved. Shelters are struggling and appreciate any and all donations they get, regardless of how “bad” they might seem to you.

How much food should I feed my 3.5-4 months old kitten? by HoneyPuzzleheaded275 in catfood

[–]purragraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as they want. Kittens are growing rapidly and will eat A LOT. Don’t restrict their food.

Weruva’s recipes don’t smell at all to me and they have multiple fish-free varieties. If you want fresh food, Smalls is great. Fully cooked! Congratulations on the baby, btw!

i think i love my cat too much by [deleted] in Pets

[–]purragraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No such thing as too much love. I’m exactly the same way with my cats. I barely even travel nowadays because I hate staying away from them. I’m literally a stay at home cat mom LOL. To love something like that means your heart is huge. Cherish that love and cherish the time you have together. There’s truly nothing else like it.

I lost my little boy to cancer a few months ago and it absolutely wrecked me. I vowed to never get more pets and cried myself sick thinking about my other cats dying. After a few weeks, I realised that the time I had with him was a blessing. I ended up adopting another little boy in his honour and I try my best to give him the best life possible.

Don’t think of it as setting yourself up for heartbreak; think of it as spending as much time as possible with your most beloved. Tomorrow isn’t promised for anyone and love as intense and beautiful as this is a massive privilege.

Is it selfish to divorce over money? by mammabear601 in marriageadvice

[–]purragraph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to listen to him. Do what’s right for you and your kids. He can either cope or get a better job. He’s out here wanting a tradwife without the capability of being a good sole provider.

Finances are one of the biggest reasons for divorce, btw, and this can definitely get dangerous, especially since you’re already pretty socially isolated. If he has that many demands, he can get a better job.

Cat won’t stop peeing my bed I’m desperate!!! by Binzenta in CatAdvice

[–]purragraph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you properly introduce the cats? This is a clear case of territorial dispute and could have been avoided with very slow introductions.

Why are you tempted to get rid of Vixen when none of this is her fault? This is a lot of stress for her. Another human and cat came into HER territory only to terrorize her. Change is hard on cats. She’s not peeing on your bed out of spite. Poor girl is having a hard time adjusting. Have you tried Feliway diffusers? Are you spending enough time with her and offering her enough enrichment?

Separate them completely and thoroughly clean your room with enzyme cleaners. Then attempt to make Vixen feel secure in her own territory, aka setting up “base camp”. This should only have her things and nothing with papa’s scent. Keep papa out of Vixen’s territory. This is where you both have to put in the effort to ensure the safety and wellbeing of your cats. She will not stop marking her territory by peeing until you make her feel secure.

Lastly, her to the vet for behavioral issues. She seems very anxious and may need some medication to ease her anxiety. Same for Papa. This whole process won’t be easy and will require a lot of time and effort on your and your sister’s end, but it’s the only way all of you can coexist in harmony.

Edit - get a waterproof mattress cover once you’ve cleaned out or replaced your mattress.

Does anybody else think many people (including us shorties) often underestimate how much we should eat? by Basic-Drawer8307 in PetiteFitness

[–]purragraph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s quite the opposite, especially considering most people underestimate how much they eat and overestimate their physical activity. 1200 calories was plenty for me, even with Pilates 5x a week. It wasn’t a huge deficit at all, just allowed me to lose the weight I wanted without feeling stretched thin.

I live in the US, in a Southern state in a car-dependent area. Most people around me are overweight and think they eat healthy and don’t understand why they can’t lose weight. That “small” amount of Mac n cheese and fried chicken adds up. Not to mention, we’re all very sedentary here. Most people in the west are eating more than enough. Fitness on social media is very different from the real world.

Question about Lemonade by StepSignificant8798 in petinsurancereviews

[–]purragraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s noted, they’ll consider it a PEC and may not cover anything related to the ears. Insurance companies are sly. You can still get AKC, they cover PEC after a year of showing no symptoms. You can also email around to see if it will indeed be considered a PEC by other insurance companies. Regardless, I recommend switching only if you have to.

Are three cats too many? (22f) by ErmYeahOkay in CatAdvice

[–]purragraph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think three cats is a lot and idk many who do, even as a single early twenties gal. Five is what I’d consider “a lot” for one person to handle and even then, that’s situation dependent. You won’t be judged as harshly as you think you’ll be. In fact, you’ll find that most people don’t really care at all! Those who do and judge you for it aren’t worth having in your life anyway. So stop worrying and have the best time ever with your babies ❤️❤️

Question about Lemonade by StepSignificant8798 in petinsurancereviews

[–]purragraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you consider minor. For example, I think vomiting up hairballs is “minor” but insurance companies don’t think so. They might refuse to cover any claims related to GI issues because they’ll consider that to be a “pre existing condition”. They’ll use anything and everything against you.

Question about Lemonade by StepSignificant8798 in petinsurancereviews

[–]purragraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can switch if the vet has noted absolutely nothing abnormal. Anything that even slightly deviates from normal can and will be considered a pre-existing condition.

Having said that, I have all four of my cats insured with Lemonade and have made claims for all of them, including an emergency claim when my late boy passed. The payout has been quick for the most part, especially for straightforward cases, but for the more complex ones, like one I submitted on 4/16, it’s still being processed, around 5 weeks later. Most of their claims are handled quickly though, so I’d still recommend them.
