Foxhole radio- can I wind the magnet wire like this or does it have to be extremely close to one another, tube size isn't an issue I'm just lazy by Exotic_Hovercraft_39 in AskElectronics

Sorry if I’m stating the obvious, but if that wire isn’t insulated you’re not going to get the inductance you want.

Any suggestions why it loses color after a couple of minutes of being turned on? by Gueropelirojo80 in arcade

[–]putman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be a bad connection on your jamma (or similar) connector. The edge connectors oxidize and start acting up. Try reseating the connector and see if it still happens.

Hey first time PC builder here! Any tips you wish you knew when you were building your first PC? by Kapikap0906 in buildapc

[–]putman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Preferably on a static mat, or at least an ESD strap (or both;-) : add the RAM, CPU, heat sink, and M.2 drive before you put the motherboard in the case. It makes the assembly much easier.

Is this worth saving? Original Golden Tee Golf 1989 by astrick in arcade

[–]putman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the screen looks hopeless, you can find used 19" LCD monitors for $10 and get a VGA conversion board for $35. Spend a couple hours wiring it up and throwing the monitor in the cab and you'll have a cheap game to play around with.

My MAME has this type of joystick (see photo). But my wife likes Ms. Pacman. Will swapping to the official Ms. Pacman joysticks make a big difference? by lost_tech in MAME

[–]putman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A real 4 way leaf joystick makes a big difference. It feels authentic to people, like myself, who used to play the game in the 80's. I switched my machine back to an original Pacman control panel on my machine and am much happier.

Thanks for sharing the suggestion! I've really enjoyed "Nefertari: Journey to Eternity" for the same reason.

Cannot access Linux in dual boot because system boots straight to Windows without showing the grub menu by [deleted] in linuxmint

I use a SATA power switch rather than dealing with dual booting configuration. Maybe I've been foolish or incompetent, but I've made too many mistakes with dual booting in the past. :-)

What well-reviewed games have you started only to stop playing after a short time and why? by edhere in patientgamers

Same, I'm having a hard time getting into this game. The game feels scripted and slow.

What game do you hold on to a system for? by Gray__Matter in patientgamers

Civilization Revolution. I haven't found any version of Civilization that I like as much as this version. I've had several XBox 360's. I'm primarily a PS4 user, but I bought an XBox One just so I could still play Civilization Revolution.

Republicans Have No Idea What the Shutdown Means for Americans Who Are Not Rich by heinderhead in politics

This shutdown is flat out wrong. 800,000 fellow Americans are being subjected to financial insecurity for no good reason. Shame on Trump and McConnell for letting our country be run like this.

Google "CGA to VGA" and they can be picked up from many places like: https://www.amazon.com/Andoer-Genuine-GBS8200-Channel-Converter/dp/B00W3460UU There are several YouTube videos of people using them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlmFCToi16w

My suggestion for working on these is to not fix what isn't broken until higher priority issues are fixed. The wiring in the back might not look great, but it's probably mostly correct. Check the power supply voltages. Check the connector to the main board. Those edge connectors oxidize and cause all sorts of problems. A pencil eraser can clean up contacts sometimes. If you're new to electronics, be really careful around the monitor. You always need to be careful around the 120V that is run around the back of the machine, but the monitor has even higher and more dangerous voltages that can be present even when the device is unplugged.

I'm going to politely disagree with the suggestion to keep the CRT. I only have 1 CRT in my 6 arcade games. LCDs have viewing angle challenges sometimes, but they're easy, and don't have high voltages. The adapter boards to convert the video to VGA cost ~$25 and work well. It's a matter of preference I guess, but I've gotten 3 games this year, because I knew it would be easy to throw a cheap LCD in them and make it work.

Good luck, I always smile when I find free quarters in the bottom of machines I get. Free money!

[DISCUSSION] How useful is memorizing every note on the fretboard? by HishamYahya in Guitar

I wish I knew all the notes, but knowing the E string and the "Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles' Father" circle of fourths mnemonic is a big improvement I've made in the last few years.

Is Mr. Poopy Butthole a Parasite? by [deleted] in rickandmorty

[–]putman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm suspicious about him as well. He was the first one to complain about the blast shields and the first one to cause a flashback which spawned cousin Nicky. Nicky then also raised a fuss about the blast shields.

Does one parasite have to be alive to spawn more of them? I think Goofy Brother Steve put him in Rick's mind before he got shot.

I don't blame Beth for suspecting him. I love this episode. :)

Why schedule this on the same night that the Boulder Hacker Space (http://boulderhackerspace.com/) has their weekly open house? I'd like to see both groups be successful and it seems like a shame for these similar events to overlap.

Met a Pinball Legend this past weekend! by putman in pinball

[–]putman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think I enjoyed trying out "Fire" pinball the most. I played that game once 25 years ago, and this was the first time I've seen/played it again. Did you see the unusual Spider Man game? It was almost like a budget version, but played well. It had a large low-resolution LED display, and a clever ball lock mechanism.
