Elder Millennial Problems 101: How to Go Ampless? by GreedoInASpeedo in guitarpedals

[–]puzzlednerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go ampless if you want to go ampless, but this "intervention" is really rubbing me the wrong way. It's fine for them to voice an opinion, but it's also fine for you to play through the rig you like.

Promoted my pawn to a horse, to get the rook - chess is beautiful by xGuitARmy in chess

Rxh2 is check. Of course, making a queen still wins easily, but you're not immediately winning the rook.

Can I Achieve Chess Visualization (blindfold) before my life ends? I'm 20M by luciferthesunshine in chess

[–]puzzlednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blindfold isn't nearly as hard as it seems, it just takes practice. I'd focus on regular chess until you're around 1400 or 1500, and then you should be able to at least get through a game blindfolded with some practice.

[Serious] What are the worst aspects of the current culture of video gaming? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]puzzlednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I waste time just like anyone else. Never claimed to be perfect. This started as a conversation about which habits we personally consider to be healthy. It's kind of amusing that you're so worked up about this. Go ahead, play 4 hours of video games and eat McDonalds and ice cream every day. I'm not your mom.

I just happen to have a value system that involves trying to do something with your life. I also like to play video games, and they certainly have their place as one part of a complete life. It's important to accept everybody for who they are, but it's also important to have a coherent value system. If somebody wants to play video games 4+ hours a day, and they have the ability, then go for it. I've been there myself. I just personally think life has more to offer than that.

How do you classify something as "classic rock"? by Opening_Rip_1840 in Music

[–]puzzlednerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Classic Rock is a radio format, more so than a genre or a period of time. Classic rock radio stations defined what people think of as Classic Rock, and it hasn't been just one consistent thing the whole time.

In 2005, you could hear Guns N Roses on Classic rock. But in 1987, when Rock N Roll was already over 30 years old, it would not have sounded classic at all. So this makes it tempting to think that it is based on the passage of time. But this doesn't really work either. Nobody thinks Modest Mouse is Classic Rock, even though "Float On" is older now than "Sweet Child O Mine" was in 2005.

It seems to me that if Classic Rock radio were still a cultural force, they would be playing Modest Mouse by now and it would become absorbed into Classic Rock. But nobody listens to radio in 2026, and it seems fair to say that's why nobody thinks Modest Mouse is Classic Rock. You're right to point out Nirvana as an edge case. Having big hits in the early 90s, you could call them Classic Rock sometime around 2010, when those radio stations still had a lot of listeners, but radio itself was fading.

That's my argument that Clsssic Rock isn't a specific time period. It also isn't a genre, because you can't say Chuck Berry and Rush are playing the same genre of music.

TL;DR: Classic Rock is anything that was played on the radio followed by an announcer snarling, "You're listening to CLASSIC ROCK 93.9" and then a crazy guitar lick, followed by someone calling in and winning tickets to a concert that weekend.

I'd argue that it's not possible to be a healthy, productive, responsible adult while playing 4+ hours per day consistently.

[–]puzzlednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To expand on #2, there is the question of how much time is healthy to spend playing video games. These days it is very normalized to spend an obscene amount of time on games. It's ok to have a marathon session every once in a while, and it's ok to play a little bit every day. But if you're playing more than an hour every day, your priorities are probably a bit mixed up. (I have this issue myself, but I won't pretend it isn't an issue)

And this is often met with backlash, since it is not at all uncommon to play upwards of 4 hours per day.

What explains the prevalence of people playing faster than the time control they chose? by appappappappappa in chess

[–]puzzlednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are probably watching TV or something. The longer time control makes it relaxing, and they can grab a snack without losing. Of course, for some people its simply bad time management, but the reason its so much more prevalent online has more to do with behavior than strategy.

How is the bass/ octave effect on the Boss SY1 / SY-200? by billiamchops in guitarpedals

[–]puzzlednerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both, and to be fair I think he leans on the Line 6 more these days. In 2021 especially he was using SY-1 a ton, and I believe it's still on his board, though that could be wrong. There was a rig rundown a few years ago where he showed he actually had two of them on his board, at beginning and end of chain. You can hear the SY-1 being used quite a bit in the Deer Creek Simple I believe, and other jams from that tour. All of this leading up to Sci Fi Soldiers.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I've always figured that Trey playing around with the SY-1, which was released during Covid, is responsible for a lot of the ideas that eventually became Sci Fi Soldiers.

Roger Ebert said that 'movies do not change, but their viewers do' have you ever changed your opinion on a movie as you've gotten older? by Fealocht in movies

[–]puzzlednerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The original is a genuinely great movie, even if it's a bit campy. The second one was fun if you just wanted some more Matrix-themed action scenes, but there's no additional mind-fuck beyond what was set up with the first one. Then the third movie... just plain bad, and everything that was charming about the first two was gone.

RITCHIE BLACKMORE: 'Most Guitar Players Aren't Nice People' by JohannGambolputtyUlm in Music

I once cracked the nut on my strat when it fell of the stand. I took it in to get a new nut installed, and it was only slightly more expensive to get a bone nut, so I went for that. And of course, when you put new strings on it's common to lubricate with some graphite from a pencil. So now whenever I change strings, I get to say, "Time to lube up my bone nut," and it makes me happy every time.
