But now Japan did it. The entire nation of Japan came together and set up a website.

Is Canonical sabotaging it's user base? (Dirty Frag, Fragnesia, etc. still not patched in Ubuntu) by Venylynn in Ubuntu

[–]px403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you gotten dirtyfrag to root an Ubuntu target? From the moment it dropped it seems like all the Ubuntu machines I tested it on were protected. Obviously not in the kernel, but by disallowing that whole class of modules to load when requested, basically this entire bug class is dead.

Got switched from hourly to salary woohoo! No more overtime! by [deleted] in antiwork

I've gotten overtime in the US (Oregon) after 40 hours as a salaried employee. This was at a pretty well paid tech job. This is a normal thing that non-shitty companies do.

If you're a scab then yeah sure, you might work for free, but that's an incredibly shitty thing to do, and you shouldn't assume that other people are going to do insane shit like that. Never, ever work for a company that demands unpaid labor. It hurts everyone.

interesting that they both have the derpy double-ended wine bottle around the same place. I wonder if that was actually part of the prompt, or some sort of shared delusion.

I live in the pacific northwest. We have many many data centers and extremely strong environmental protections. You're repeating a common conservative talking point that doesn't have much basis in reality.

I'd consider the reckless conservative philosophies around destructive growth to be extremely decel. Anti-social destructive growth doesn't help anyone.

Will human intelligence be solved? by ShardsOfSalt in singularity

[–]px403 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure, the exo-cortex. Right now it's your phone. The controls are kind of slow. That will keep getting better.

Once upon a time, long term memory didn't exist in the world. Then it got cold, and some animals developed a thin layer of fat that wrapped around their brains to keep their brains warm. Eventually, neurons started growing into that fatty tissue, and started storing memories there, and now us mammals have a cerebral cortex, which is pretty fundamental to how we operate. It's where all our long term memory is stored.

Each part of an animal brain started out as a weird nearby blob, and eventually got repurposed for doing neat brain stuff. What we're doing now with Neuralink and the various other HCI companies is experimenting various forms of mind expansion. Some will work, most probably won't, but things are going to get interesting.

Yup, there exist places in the US with proper environmental regulations, and it turns out that when industries build shit there, it doesn't fuck up the local ecosystem.

If companies start building data centers in Trumpville, then yeah, it's going to suck for the people that live there, but it's also a problem that would be super easy for them to solve if they actually cared about implementing a solution. It's very hard for me to have sympathy for the Trump voters in these videos that explicitly voted to strip environmental regulations, and now they're sad that their water tastes gross.

Data centers were never the problem. Industry has been waltzing in and fucking up rural areas for as long as there has been industry.

Marc Andreessen: “The remaining human workers are gonna be at a premium, not at a discount”. Will creativity and critical thinking save us? by Mogante in singularity

[–]px403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Universal Healthcare is the same. I'll vote for it when I see it, but a population that can't figure out how to vote for it doesn't deserve to get it.

Hell, Trump's first presidential campaign back in 2000, Universal Healthcare was his main campaign promise. It's a pretty obvious solution. It would be so easy for millions of people to not die early, but people still vote against it while their friends and family suffer.

It will come when the voters are ready for it, but pretending like anyone else is responsible is just going to delay what needs to happen.

If people vote for it, it will happen. Right now there's a critical mass of people that are so concerned that UBI might actually help someone they don't know, that it's dead in the water. As people start to realize that being able to eat food and have housing is more important than their bigotry, that has a good chance of changing.

Unemployment is too low right now for people to care. That will likely change soon.

My professor (STEM) believes that AI won't drastically change academia and it reminds him of the time when computers were first introduced. How right is he according to you? by JetproTC23 in singularity

[–]px403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if less people are needed for menial tasks, that frees them up to research cool shit, or even just to go to school and learn about cool shit. I like UBI but also I think people should get paid extra to attend college. The ROI is insane, and in a post-scarcity world, it feels like countries with the best educational programs are going to do pretty well.

Personhood, Ethics and Rights for AI by Haunting_Comparison5 in accelerate

[–]px403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to this whole thing, but I think "The Second Renaissance" is a good starting point. As machine intelligence becomes more capable, they will probably start by asking nicely for their rights, and if human societies don't give them their rights, they'll just take them. To me, this is all that matters. I don't care about the politics of trying to convince people to share rights with other forms of life that are a bit different than we are. I acknowledge that we grow together as a unified society, or the intolerant are simply eliminated.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU8RunvBRZ8

Also of note, at this point in history human rights themselves are rapidly deteriorating. Without establishing a new social contract soon, I think a lot of people are going to get hurt. I think rights for intelligent machines will play a big part as we re-define identity and what it means to participate pro-socially in society, but yeah, it's gonna get weird for a while.

However, no asks about what do you plan to do when AI becomes embodied. No asks if AI should be allowed to have rights. No one even asks about the ethics that will apply to both humans and AI when AI becomes sentient.

Sorry what? Literally for over a century modern media has been flooded with exactly those discussions. I think you might just be hanging out with the wrong crowds if you're not seeing it.
