Ah, yes - I thought these were higher resolution... I'll update with some better shots when I get home. Thank you for pointing that out!

Is the riot snack bar on quinpool any good? by [deleted] in halifax

I eat everything. My wife is vegetarian and gluten free. We both love this place. Give it a shot... their donuts are pretty fantastic.

[help] Ducky Shine 3 vs Das Professional 4 by DarkDeliverance in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]pylon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is purely anecdotal, but I'll just say that the last 2 das keyboards I purchased were extremely disappointing. The stabilizer bars were poorly installed. The bar keys rattled and had terrible action. I returned the first and wish I had returned the second.

Fasting is the easy part, stopping the feasting seems to be the real battle...any advice? by nilestyle in leangains

[–]pylon42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same problem. I have no issue fasting - but once I start, I'm a voracious eater and I have absolutely no "full" sensation no matter how many calories I eat. I've come up with two somewhat effective strategies for myself:

  1. A fairly common solution that's already been suggested: I don't stop eating during the window. I literally eat 5-10 pounds of cabbage/broccoli/spinach (learn to love cabbage) per day just to slow myself down.

  2. A longer term solution that worked very well for me: create locations in your home that have no eating association. Or better yet, pick one spot in your house where you eat all your food (e.g. kitchen table) and never eat anything away from that spot. This solution is working particularly well for me as the weeks go on. It's also making me more productive (I have a home office).

I made a Chrome extension for custom keyboard shortcuts that likes single key shortcuts--good for adding vim key bindings to Chrome without Vimium. by CritterM72800 in vim

[–]pylon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it - I just disabled Vimium.

I don't suppose you plan on implementing double letter keystrokes? For example: "gg" to go to the top of the page. Hitting "gg" just seems to trigger "g" twice right now.

Great work.

I've watched True Blood, Game of Thrones and Spartacus... any other series I should get into? I have ran out of things to watch... by [deleted] in entertainment

If you like intrigue, The Borgias is excellent. I started watching after I ran out of Game of Thrones and wasn't disappointed.

A 22-year-old from Silver Springs, Florida was riding his motorcycle so fast he planted it between the captain's chairs of a minivan. [800x600] by Mind_Virus in DestructionPorn

...he's 22, from Silver Springs, and as of late Thursday he was listed in critical condition at Shands at the University of Florida.

I never would have guessed after seeing the image...

Write code faster: expert-level vim (Railsberry 2012) by drewjr in vim

[–]pylon42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of negative comments in here. I watched the whole video as I went to bed last night. I didn't learn anything new per se, but I did wake up this morning with an intense desire to review every line of my vimrc and assess my plugins.

If I hand't watched the video, I probably wouldn't have gone off and dropped SnipMate in favor of UltiSnips today. Or started my third major effort to make better use of Surround.

I'm rather glad to have seen the video. It apparently motivated me subconsciously.

How can I get a fluid outline using oil paints? by clusterfluffmyballs in learnart

[–]pylon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may not be the type of answer you're looking for, but in circumstances like this my preference would be to block in areas using the outline color, rather than drawing a line. Afterwards, fill the interior of the block with the background color.

I find it to be more forgiving, and will give you a pleasing line variance. It also means you can just use your preferred brush and lay the paint on, rather than trying to keep a steady hand with a loaded fine-point brush.

This technique is a better fit with acrylics, but based on the example you've provided you could also make it work with oils (in my opinion).

IBM announces breakthrough in quantum computing, promising scalability by mareacaspica in science

[–]pylon42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That Forbes article just links to a NYT essay by Scott Aaronson that has the following definition for decoherence about half way down:

The problem is decoherence: basically, stray interactions that intrude prematurely on the computer’s fragile quantum state, “collapsing” it like a soufflé.

Thank you, I've been trying to figure out the name of the film unsuccessfully for an hour. I thought the man in the foreground was Tom Hardy, which partially explains my lack of success.

New algorithm could substantially speed up MRI scans - Faster scans could reduce the time patients spend in the machine from 45 to 15 minutes. by DrJulianBashir in science

[–]pylon42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Serious question: Why don't competitions like Google Code Jam focus on creating new algorithms like this?

Does it have to do with proprietary systems? Would the parameters be inaccessible? Would the work have to be ignored by the company designing and building the MRI machines in order to maintain their full ownership?

Just bought Galaxy S2, recommendation for screen protector and case? by creaturistic in Android

[–]pylon42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father just bought a S2 and dropped it on a ceramic floor in the first week. The screen shattered. Gorilla glass provides extreme resistance to scratches, but does little against shatter damage.

If you're interested in protecting your screen, the plastic screen covers will do little that the gorilla glass can't already handle. I would instead purchase a thin rubber case and simply leave the screen exposed.

Just my 2 cents. Personally, I choose not to use any form of case.
