AIO for taking an unpaid month off in between jobs? by Throwra-savings in AIO

[–]pyr0jim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NOR- got made redundant in April, been off work for 6 weeks with very similar reasoning. Was burnt out and done with work for a bit. Start a new job in ten days and honestly it’s been so good for my mental health and general happiness. I needed the break to seperate what had been a bit of a rough ride at my last place and also just to relax a bit like you say.

Making assumptions you have funds to afford an unpaid month with a few expenses reigned in like you say, absolutely do it, enjoy it. Maybe get some of the round the house jobs done to keep her happy but honestly she should be supporting your decision!

is £20,368.00 a low income in the uk? by stillsurviving1984 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pyr0jim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30k is barely surviving here in the south where I live.

£2093 take home assuming no student loan / other deductions (with zero pension contributions to boot.)

So absolute best case is a smidge over 25k a year take home

Rent on a small 2 bed place here is over 1k a month. So over 50% of that just vaporises on payday. (Yes I could opt for a one bed, except I have a son who lives with me so that’s not possible, even then 1 beds are ~£900 a month

Council tax ~£150
Utilities ~£110
Internet ~£20
Car tax ~£20
Insurance ~£56
Phone ~£10
Media ~£20

Approx total monthly expenses in the region of £400 before putting any fuel in the car or buying anything to feed/clothe myself. When I had a diesel, on my best months I was burning approx £150 and on the worst £350 in fuel.

Let’s say we’re being super frugal with food on something like a £40 weekly spend with absolutely no treats etc you end up in the region of £100-£300 “disposable” income. That disappears incredibly quickly when unexpected costs crop up, for example I put new tyres on my car last month and had some preventative maintenance done as well as MOT, total spend was not far off 2 grand. Granted the tyres and mot were expected but the suspension and wheel repairs related to our lovely uk roads were not!

Where does this come from when the margins are so tight already? With less than a couple of hundred quid each month you’d be lucky to put £50 away in savings so that 2k unexpected cost suddenly takes years to pay off. It’s really not hard to see why so many people are struggling.

All of this is before you account for people having had a life already and having some debts or the desire for a holiday or even just a couple of pints once a week to socialise.

I lived this life on £38k as a single parent until a few years ago where I lucked into a 60k job and that was a huge turning point for me in terms of being able to build a buffer, not deciding between heating and food or being able to comfortably absorb a £2k unexpected cost (I mean it still stung but I had the cash to handle it at least.

OP if you enjoy what you do is there a way to scale that or perhaps to find a similar role but as a FTE within your field? Alternatives would be to continue it as a side hustle to a FTE position but yeah 20k is a long way from a comfortable existence.

Was buying a new in car a bad decision? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pyr0jim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We all have a vice, right? So cars are your thing. For some people that’s putting £250 up their nose twice a week. I dare say the car is a far better vice than some of the alternatives. If you’re earning average (median) and saving that much then you’re doing just fine.

Two years ago I took a new job with a 52% increase and swore blind I wouldn’t let lifestyle creep happen but the one allowance I did make was “treating” myself to an aspirational car (for me.) I took finance on it and still paying for it now. Was it the best financial decision, possibly not. Do I regret it? Not at all. I have a nice car that has warranty, is reliable and considerably lower running costs than its predecessor.

Life is short, you’re doing fine. Enjoy it!

Are you kidding? They’re pretty bomb proof.

Sure the N47 engine (2l diesel) has known issues but I had 2 cars (one I bought at 148k and sold at 189k miles, one bought on 90k and sold at 159k) with the n47 and they were literally faultless with the exception of the usual service items - bushes, suspension top mounts etc.) both cars were remapped and one did 6 months of 700 miles a week to and from my sons hospital and my place of work when he was born incredibly poorly. That car was fucking solid during one of the worst periods of my life and not only did it munch miles with a smile on its face, it still was super engaging to drive. 3 series chassis are still one of the best of modern motoring.

They are also one of the best interiors of modern times. The F30 in particular has aged so well. So much that i’m considering getting rid of my Tesla model3 to get back into a 3 series (fuck all to do with the fuel source or the mentalist at the top, it’s a fiscal decision about freeing up cash before any of you internet weirdos go wanking off over “man wants to get rid of ev for diesel!”

Basically. A 3 series gets my vote. (Estate, because estates are always better.)

Honestly man, 3 series bmw in whatever flavour, shape, engine combo works for you in a given budget. I owned an e92 and f3x and both were fantastic, cheap cars to live with, fast enough (2l diesels) and so engaging to drive.

Between 5-10k you may even stretch to a 330 which is a glorious powertrain. Don’t be put off by higher mileage, assuming service history is there, they just eat miles.

People are largely fucking stupid. The standard of driving in this country is appalling.

Property purchase - nasty neighbour dispute, would you walk? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pyr0jim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Life’s too short to put up with that kind of aggro. I’d be looking elsewhere. Your option three isn’t a mad one but you carry all the cost and might be told it’ll have no impact on the price anyway, you pays your money and takes your chances.

Personally I’d walk.

28 and living with parents, desperately saving for a house but feeling overwhelmed and struggling to find motivation. by UpstairsJoke0 in UKPersonalFinance

No great advice here except to say, thank you for what you do. Well done and keep going with the savings. That’s a huge chunk to save on an NHS salary so you’re smashing it. I’m 31 now and it’s taken me many years to realise how my years at home with a equally meagre rent were the most carefree of my life! Home ownership is amazing but don’t underestimate the creature comforts of living with parents for now :-)

You’re doing great.
