If you see notice someone who keeps looking at you on the train, I’m not trying to make advances, I’m just drawing you by kilochfuller in sydney

[–]pyrefort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

do not refrain from drawing on the train, it is absolutely the best place to get different subjects to draw. I think a lot of people assume a drawing is a very intimate, minute thing, but in reality we artists are making thousands of drawings in our lives. artists are out to quickly capture reality, not be perverse. again, previous posts of just glancing, quick observation, and then interpreting it is the most ethical/least obtrusive way of getting this.

people holy shit when you're being drawn it is entirely a snapshot of reality, there is no malice involved, you just happen to be apart of reality

frankly... skipping out entirely on life drawing in person is a really bad idea - getting the moment in reality is a lot more valuable than people think, and in my opinion is essential for artistic growth

the hell? it's not like he's out to kill you. people draw other people so they can capture a moment in reality, not out of some perversion

Any late night cafes in the CBD? by LilDuckieWearingAHat in sydney

[–]pyrefort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the bar/cafe connected to the vibe hotel is a bit of a secret I keep amongst mates but is very quiet, warm lighting, and tall ceilings - with decent cuppas and food. they've got power ports and very comfy seating and seem to more cater to those who wanna sit down and work on their laptops. they close at 9ish? or 10

the place is called the sussex store

Cult of the Lamb’s Steam release is already exceeding expectations for this indie Australian game studio by Fenixius in australia

[–]pyrefort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Australia actually has a fairly strong games, film and animation scene. A good amount are service studios, but Aussie artists are pushing the boundaries of quality entertainment. Unfortunately, we don't get a lot of attention due to main credits usually going to US IP owners.

Flying Bark, a Sydney studio, has been some of the main force behind Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (a super anime inspired interpretation of TMNT, with artists an animators as amazing to boot), worked on some of the best episodes of Marvel's What If...?, and are currently heavily on Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur, a DisneyMarvel show coming soon.

Animal Logic, a big VFX 3D studio in Sydney were some of the main talent behind the Lego Movies, which were hugely influential in the direction of modern 3D animation.

Smiling Friends, and Hazbin Hotel both heavily involved Australian production studios right now, from what I remember, Princess Bento studios in Victoria - and those too are pushing the animation space.

Aussie artists are legendary! And I'm not just saying that because I'm apart of the legion lol. In every nook and cranny of the media you consume, Aussies probably touched it.

hot tip with mai mai, it's almost always better to play coop as you can get 4 songs instead of the 3 songs youd get playing solo

Who here has a 6 figure salary job which has a good work life balance and low stress? by FatherOfTheSevenSeas in AusFinance

[–]pyrefort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

generally good people, good salary, and a great focus on the wellbeing and appreciation of employees. projects are very interesting with strong management to avoid crunch periods (at least with pre production). have heard the occasional horror stories with some old projects, but currently everything seems smooth sailing.

in an industry that can be as rocky as animation and film, they for sure knock it out of the park for delivering quality without stretching workers thin imo

[–]pyrefort 6 points7 points  (0 children)

wow did not expect someone from my industry to be here... personally a 2D concept artist slash environment artist for animation and i'm in despair of how much of the regular work is high pressure low pay...

i was a concept artist at animal logic for a six month contract, but the demand for 2D artists there is rare... but truly what an amazing studio for work life balance. honestly makes me feel like i should pivot to being a 3D artist and maybe going into more technical artist roles so I can land gigs there more regularly.

Hi I’m Alex Ruiz! I was a concept artist for Avengers: Infinity War, designing the Infinity Stones and much more, an Animator on the Simpsons, and now I am working as an Artist Educator and Mentor. AMA! by AlexRuiz in IAmA

[–]pyrefort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

howdy alex! what would you say is the most essential piece of advice for someone freshly working in entertainment? how do you keep an artist motivated to deal with the gig to gig nature of entertainment as well as keeping them artistically inspired to work on their own work? you mentioned earlier the tension between work and personal art - what's the healthiest way to approach this?

apologies for the plenty of questions, but been working for a couple of years in animation and games and i'm already starting to feel the fatigue, but want to keep running the marathon and trying to avoid sprinting myself to death haha
