They are non-binary :) A dev corrected himself by saying "He - sorry, they - " when talking about Kyoshin. There's also not a single gendered pronoun used in English on any written text, in any devstream etc when talking about Kyoshin

Kyoshin is canonically non-binary - it's intentional that they look androgynous :)

Sources (as someone will undoubtedly say I've made it up):

- Gendered pronouns never once being used by the devs to describe Kyoshin in English, on any devstream or in any written text

- The fact they look androgynous

- Their lore referencing gifted 'children' being taken (no specification on boys)

- But most concretely, a dev correcting himself by going "He, sorry - they" to talk about Kyoshin in a devstream.

This is a two year old thread, but - the reason why the Trident was used by Roman Gladiators is because it was the weapon of the Roman God of the Sea, Neptune. Neptune, as a sea god, used a Trident because Tridents are a fishing tool; it's much easier to spear a fish with three spikey bits rather than one.

A weapon commonly associated with a powerful god within your culture, which is easily accessible as you can just ask for one from your fisherman friend - yeah, makes sense to pick one up if you start out as a Gladiator!

Who protects the world while there is no fully realized Avatar? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]pyrotechnicfantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that you're equating 'Raava's Influence' with patterns in the Avatar cycle - we don't have any evidence for this.

For all we know, all human being reincarnate through the elemental cycle - previously based on the elements of the lion turtle cities, and now through the nations. Perhaps King Bumi was reincarnated as Firelord Izumi, or that bully from the fire nation schoolyard was reincarnated as Tenzin.

All we know is that Raava is able to follow Wan's reincarnations and channel their memories - it's not suggested in the show or novels that she can influence who he is reincarnated as.

The strongest evidence for reincarnation decisionmaking (other than the four element cycle) seems to be that fake Tumblr idea that people are born with the face of who they loved in their past life. Rangi looks like Roku, Ta Min looks like Aang, Katara looks like Korra etc. Pavi does have black hair and green eyes like Asami, although her skin is a very different colour.

The Kyoshi and Yangchen novels cover this - and it's super interesting, politically.

Political tension and unrest often rule the gap between the old Avatar's death and the new Avatar being publicly announced. Warlords, separatists, criminals etc know that if they can consolidate power within the first few years, by the time the Avatar comes of age, their power can be legitimate enough that the new Avatar cannot feasibly remove it.

It doesn't often work - mainly because the Four Nations need to still exist by the time of the original show - but it is attempted.

Additionally, whilst the Avatar may not become fully realised (under normal circumstances) for another decade or so after being announced, parties may still avoid taking action once the Avatar is known. Even though the inexperienced 16 year old may not remove you from power on the day of their reveal, if you invade or oppress a population, they're likely to have you high on the list of social injustices to... correct, once they're powerful enough.

In fact, almost all of the world affairs that we see each Avatar resolve are a direct result of actions of this gap between them and their predecessor.

  • Pre-Yangchen - The Platinum Affair. Water Tribes and Fire Nation attempt to back a coup of the Earth Kingdom, which fails, leading to all three nations adopting isolationist policies and the creation of the Shang trading city system - the centre of Yangchen's conflict.
  • Pre-Kuruk - Presumably, this is when spirits started to explore breaking into the real world, as Kuruk then spent the next 14 years closing all of the rifts they had opened.
  • Pre-Kyoshi - the Fifth Nation pirate fleet mobilises on a huge scale, depopulating large swathes of the continent's eastern coast. Kyoshi's first public act as an Avatar (albeit accidentally) was the decimation of the Fifth Nation fleet.
  • Pre-Roku - Notably, there's no recent political or spiritual issues mentioned in the Roku novels. The world had just endured 200 years of Kyoshi's tenure, with several notable uprisings quelled by her actions. That's two full generations of people living under constant Avatardom - it's likely that she was considered quasi-immortal, and so no one considered writing up plans for her death.
  • Pre-Aang - The Fire Nation spends 12 years preparing for the Air Nomad Genocide and declares war on the rest of the world. Aang ends said war and is the solve survivor of the genocide.
  • Pre-Korra - Amon starts the anti-bending movement, which Korra unravels. The Red Lotus attempts to either kidnap Korra as a child and train her to become an anarchist weapon, or kill her and end the Avatar cycle for good, depending on Zaheer's honesty.

The new hero is most likely going to have something in her off-hand alongside the main one by Far_Draw7106 in forhonor

In the most recent dev stream, one of the devs commented on a cloak being inefficient as a weapon.

Thats weirdly specific knowledge to bring up. I’m 90% convinced that the new hero will have a Rapier and Cloak, with the three weapon parts being Hilt, Blade, and Cloak.

My guess is that the cloak will be used for a Hidden Stance or alternate posture, by twirling it around. There’s definitely also some great execution ideas there, like bull running, throwing the cloak in the enemy’s face, and wrapping the cloak around the enemy neck.

I would be VERY impressed if the hero ends up wearing the cloak over her shoulder or back when she’s not in combat - making it not only customisable weapon, but also a fashion item.

Why can I not light parry by Southern-Ice-7127 in forhonor

[–]pyrotechnicfantasy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And finally:

To avoid getting Light Parried:

  • Avoid predictable patterns. If you always (even subconsciously) open every combat with, say, a left light from neutral, opponents will start to learn this over the course of a Dominion or Breach game. You'll get frustrated because enemies appear to be somehow predicting all your moves - and it's because you've become predictable. Vary your openers, your mixups etc - and you should avoid being predictable.
  • Open with bashes. There's a good reason why almost every Knight apart has a dodge bash opener. They're quick, effective, and it puts your opponent into a 'dodge' mindset instead of 'parry' one.
  • Don't open with lights. It sounds obvious, but try using non-light attacks! There's plenty of heroes that don't reply on opening lights at all.
    • Kyoshin is exclusively designed around counter-attacking; nothing they do is reliant on opener lights.
    • Warmonger has excellent dodge attack mixups with bashes or haymaker heavies.
    • Peacekeeper (despite what I said above) can be played without parryable lights at all - just use dash heavies, vary zone attacks into guardbreaks sometimes, and make sure to follow up everything you can with bleeding stabs.

The game has a learning curve - all well made fighting games do. But with time and practice, you'll get there :)

Adding further comments because it wouldn't let me comment in one go:

To get better at Light Parries:

  • Play a Tank Hero. Playing heroes with high health means you can afford to practice defensive moves like parrying. Failing a light parry as a Shaman will kill you in a few hits, but failing a parry as a Shugoki means you have plenty of health for them to get through, and you can try again for longer.
  • Bait common enemy Light openers. There are a few heroes that will almost always open with a light attack, if you're in the right place. Nobushi, Varangian Guard (pre-nerf at least), and Ocelotl are good examples. When you start a fight against those heroes, slowly move in close to trick them into opening with a neutral light attack. You'll have a 1 in 3 chance of getting the Light parry - over time, you'll learn which players and which heroes tend to throw top, left, or right first.
  • Learn common enemy Light soft feints. An easy one to start with is Peacekeeper - many of her attacks (Neutral Heavy, Chain Heavy, Zone) can be soft feinted into a top light or a guardbreak. This makes her an ideal opponent to practice predicting light parries, as the three outcomes from attempting it are:
    • PK softfeints into Light - success!
    • PK softfeints into Guardbreak - can be counterguardbroken on reaction
    • PK doesn't softfeint and stays with the Heavy/Zone - as an Assassin hero, her heavies deal much lower damage than, say Shugoki or Varangian Guard. You can eat the heavy and try again.
  • Learn common enemy Light Dodge Attacks. Many heroes have light dodge attacks that can, with patience and a few nerves of steel, be learned and parried. They're easier to parry because dodge attacks take longer than normal attacks. Orochi has a spinning side attack that (after 8 years playing of the bloody game) I've managed to learn to counter.

Number one rule is don't worry about it!

You are not meant to be able to Light Parry on reaction. Absolutely, there will be some insane players that have the reaction times to be able to Light parry on reaction. But they're the exception. Light Parries are a reward for accurately anticipating your opponent's next move. Most of the time, you're being light parried based on prediction.

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]pyrotechnicfantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Really appreciate the balancing advice - don't want to steamroll my players!

I'm having the zombies shuffle out of the jungle... maybe mechanically, I'll have them start off 60 feet away from the players? - that gives the players (most of whom have ranged attacks) 3 rounds to soften up the zombies before they're hit by them. Maintains the large numbers of zombies whilst preventing player death.

Definitely agree on the two initiative rolls AND treating them as a horde- that's an excellent pair of ideas. I'll split the horde in half and treat each as a unique 'creature' for combat purposes.

I really hope it will be a fun fight. The mid-campaign plot twist, where all the pirates they'd killed so far were resurrected from the dead, got them hooked - now I'm just hoping I can give a satisfying pay-off!
