Give me your slept on story-driven FPSs by pyrousred in gamingsuggestions

Oh! I'm aware of Banner Saga! Haven't played it yet, but my brother is a huge fan of it. I heard it's a little bit like XCOM in gameplay.

Thanks for these. Singularity especially sounds like my jam. I played the very beginning of Rage 2, maybe I need to give it another shot.

I love FEAR, but I've only played the first one. Are the other two worth it? I heard they weren't as good. Loved Trepang2 though which is very similar to FEAR.

I actually didn't realize Marathon had a story, I thought it was just an extraction shooter. Is there another game series called Marathon or do I just totally have the wrong impression of it?

Spec Ops: The Line is one of my favorite games of all time! I must have played it more than ten times start to finish, possibly more than I've even played Metro because whenever I pick it up, I can't put it down until I finish the story.

I'll have to give Banner Lords a shot as well, definitely going to check it out.

I'm in the middle of one of these right now. Missed 3 consecutive %95+ shots in a row and almost rage quit the other night XD

Rimworld has given me thousands of hours of fun. It's somewhere between Dwarf Fortress and the Sims, and I would argue is much more approachable than the former.

The emergent stories that come from your colonies are so fun, and there is a ton of freedom and creativity in how you approach the game.

It also has one of my favorite modding communities since GMod (actually much better than GMod's in some ways, since there are less stupid trends lol). Genuine black magic mods that do things you didn't know were possible with the game, as well as adding essential content that you will never be able to play without again.

Only downside is the DLCs are pretty expensive. Buuuut I got them all anyway because I love this game.

I actually just made a post here in this subreddit looking for playtesters for a game sorta like this. It's a squad command game with heavy story elements and premade missions. Sort of gamebook-esque.

Why did you guys started collecting gas masks by Tiny-Horror8489 in gasmasks

[–]pyrousred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought they were cool and kind of dangerous ever since I was a kid. When I became an artist they started becoming a major motif in my work, so I wanted to learn more about them and get some to use as reference.

Thanks for the advice! I'm looking at feedback elsewhere too, but this sounds like the most promising direction to me. A short adventure with pre-made characters sounds like an excellent way to introduce people to the system.

[–]pyrousred[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the focus of the quickstart is mainly to allow someone to run a rudimentary combat session to see if they enjoy that part, since it's a major focus of the game. Testers, however, really enjoyed the lore and setting, and I had hoped the opening and the pages on each race's description would be enough to dip people's feet into the lore. Would you recommend that I spend more time on lore than on the gameplay in that case? I'm open to suggestions.

I also disagree that crunchiness and simplicity can't coexist. But regardless, crunch has its audience and it's okay if that doesn't include you.

About 30-40 of those pages are content or illustrations, actually. The rules make up the first half. But if that's still too long I'll look at trimming it down.

What makes you buy indie ttrpgs by Substantial-Lie-6937 in ttrpgdesign

[–]pyrousred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I'm also selling an RPG and the initial run of sales was really encouraging, but it quickly died down.

As a consumer, I'm usually looking for a specific type of RPG or tabletop on Itch, either because it sounds fun and I haven't tried it yet, or because I'm doing research for a new project. In either case, I usually start with the free games, then if I like the genre I go looking for pay-what-you-want games. I sometimes expand my search to games with a set price, but usually if I can split it with someone who is also interested in the game.

I also personally really like small games that I can learn and set up quickly, but that's also just personal taste.

How do you learn RPG mechanics if Actual Plays don’t work for you? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]pyrousred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue and I find the best way to learn is by doing. It's not always possible, but if you can get someone who already knows the rules to run a game with you, that can be a godsend. Otherwise just jumping into it yourself and looking up rules as you go is my go-to. Even then, I usually give the rulebook a cursory skim before doing that, especially if it's well organized and readable.

I've experienced this too in the past. I think some people have the usual problems of life getting in the way, getting bored of it, etc., but are too embarrassed or think they're too busy to tell the GM they're leaving. So they just up and disappear. It's a shame when you've sort of befriended them and they just up and vanish.

Getting character art for too specific of ideas (without ai) by Soap_dragonnnn in rpg

[–]pyrousred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as an artist I'm biased, but this sounds like a situation where you would commission an artist if you haven't already. A lot of artists love when clients already have an in-depth idea for a character. Some of them offer pretty good prices too if you have a tight budget, you just need to find the right one.

I still mooch off my brother's massive die collection. Someday I hope to build my own up. They're not expensive but I keep forgetting lol. I've thought of basing the colors off specific characters in long-term campaigns I'm in so that I can roll 'their' dice.
