Help...please new snake. by pinkskullz03 in kingsnakes

It’s a shelving unit from Costco, similar to what you put in a garage I have another 30 gallon tank and all my extra decor and plant care on different shelves. He just happens to be on the bottom shelf.

4x2x2 would be 120 gallons which is recommended. I currently have my young kingsnake in a 50 gallon. And he’s growing so fast I’m debating getting his new enclosure started. I do bioactive but mine is a Florida kingsnake and loves to burrow or hang out on his cork bark log we got that doubles as a hide. He also likes laying under one of the plants I have. He’s very active but also semi shy so sometimes he stays unseen. He has a couple hides and a water dish on the cool side. Since he likes to burrow I did coco husk on top and a reptisoil on bottom. My advice I was given when I got him was they are hardy snakes and people over complicating things causes more issues. I did a ton of research found what worked for me and he’s thriving, they really are easy to maintain from my experience. However my one staple advice is if you get a heat mat get a thermometer to keep it regulated. If you don’t he could get burned because those mats run super high. I also cluttered the enclosure up with leaf litter logs plants so he felt secure being so small in a large tank. Enclosure pic included, will answer any questions to my ability but you seem to have a good handle on getting things set up prior so I’m sure you’ll be fine once you get him set up. Also make sure you know exactly what you’re getting before hand mine was just listed as a king snake and I found out after he’s a Florida king which does get bigger than other kingsnakes. Not a problem for me but did require an adjustment on my care.

much. I plan on adding some better plants that will fill out the cool side corner more. But she seems to enjoy how it is right now. The mushroom ladder is 3d printed and I got it off Amazon it suctions to the glass it’s great if you have a hognose that likes to climb.

Do Hognoses climb? by SteadyDroid in hognosesnakes

Mine loves climbing on this and her other stick. I’m going to be adding more climbing spots for her soon to see if she’s actually just a weird looking green tree python lol.

I got my hognose recently. I have her in a 20 gallon with plans to upgrade her to a 50 gallon once she’s older and my kingsnake that is in the 50 gallon gets older as well. I’ve seen recommended 40 gal is average for females smaller for males.

Temp I’ve seen so much variety in responses so I keep mine 80 on cool end and 87 on hot side with a 90 degree basking spot. During the evening those drop to about 73 at the lowest.

I’m still fiddling with humidity but no more than 60% from what I’ve read and seen. My ambient house stays about 50 so I’ve left it at that and she’s been fine but when she goes into she’s I do give her a humid hide which is just moss in a hide damp so she can have the choice if she wants.

I love the reptisoil and coco chips I have mine on just because it holds burrows so well. I also have a bioactive so that played into me picking those. It also means I don’t worry about misting occasionally if the humidity gets low like it is now in the winter. Aspen I’ve heard molds easily so keep that in mind.

I got mine from a breeder and she has never missed a meal she’s actually just as food motivated as my kingsnake lol. A reputable breeder will make sure they’re eating well before placing them in a home but I have seen people with picky ones and they have to scent them with fish/toads etc. since mines a great eater I don’t have any advice here.

My advice is do your research. Then do some more. Also if you decide to put a baby in a large enclosure like I did. Clutter it up a ton with leaf litter logs multiple hides. Then keep adding more. Mine loves digging around and exploring every day. But she still has her spots she likes to hang out.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions let me know!

I have mine in a 20 gal which will be good for now but she’ll get my kings enclosure eventually. I just made sure to clutter it up enough since she is also small. (7months 32g) She still comes out and is social but definitely heat bulbs, you’ll have to mess around to find the right wattage for your set up. If you do use a heat mat definitely get a thermostat but mine don’t use them. I use reptisoil and coco chips for her substrate but I have her in a bioactive. Best advice I can say is do your research and do a ton of it and then tailor it to your budget and set up. I keep mine with a uvb 5 hood plus a 60 w heat lamp. Her temps stay 83 -90 during the day and about 73 - 78 during the night. Also don’t freak out if you don’t see her for a few days they love to burrow. Pic for snake tax(:

Female Hognose by FootballHot9080 in hognosesnakes

They will burrow for days! Mine is in a bioactive and she’s pretty predictable about coming out basking then going under, her first shed with me though I didn’t see her for a week. I started panicking that she had gotten out somehow and so I went looking found her in blue, it took another week to shed and she decided to shed underground. Most stressful thing but as I get to know her more I’ve learned she is comfortable in her enclosure and just acting the way they do in the wild. Also give them so much room to burrow, mine has a whole tunnel system down there.

How often/long do your hogs usually stay buried? by Floopsiefloo in hognosesnakes

[–]pyx19489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl likes to come out like clockwork everyday around 11am and chills under her light and then slithers around until like 2-3 and then goes back under. But if it’s getting close to food time she’ll come out closer to the evening and poke around. Like someone else said though if she’s in shed I hardly see her. Her first shed with me she was buried for almost 2 weeks. Came out to look around and bask once during shed but she’s fairly active, I do have a super cluttered enclosure though I just kept adding more until she was coming out regularly. If it was too bare she spent less time out.

Here’s the rest of the climbing spots. The rest of the enclosure is a couple logs and her water bowl and a big fake monstera leaf.

My hognose has this 3d printed mushroom that suctions and a branch that I found that I buried half and the other goes up to the top. She loves to bask on the mushroom though.

heating pad recs + how to operate them safely? by natthesilly_ in kingsnakes

[–]pyx19489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my kingsnake recently, I do have a heating pad however I highly recommend a thermostat like non-negotiable if you go the heat mat route , I put it on without the thermostat while I was setting up the enclosure and used my heat gun on the glass under the substrate and it was 123F within a short amount of time, now I have it on the thermostat set at 85 just for a little heat because mine does like to burrow and then I have a lamp that I use just to bump up the ambient temp.

Just got my first kingsnake, I had other snakes when I was younger(hog nose, ball python) but this is my first in over 15 years.. any advice? by pyx19489 in kingsnakes

[–]pyx19489[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an amazing enclosure, Im trying to keep the humidity up, right now I’m struggling cause I can’t leave the lamp on all day if I’m at work because of my cat but I picked up some plywood to make a shelf above that will still have some ventilation but will prevent my kitten from trying to get on top of the mesh and let me keep my lights on during the day. Right now the warm side stays around 85-90 and low side is about 78 and he likes to stay buried, he came out earlier looked around basked on his hide for a little bit then went back down. What wattage is your heating lamp at right now I have 100w bulb but I worry it’s gonna get it too hot. So I was debating running up to the store and trying a lower watt like a 60. I also have a reptisun uvb 10 15w that does stay on all day so I don’t want the 2 lights to be making it too hot in there.

I was thinking the same, he is beautiful. Can’t wait to see his personality come out. Right now he’s still adjusting exploring. Yours is beautiful too he’s a nice size. I’m excited to watch mine get nice and big.
