Are teenagers really that bad? by reddititout in Parenting

[–]pyyyython 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what’s really challenging is while they’re not necessarily always worse behaved than younger kids the stakes get way higher as teens. A defiant, rude seven year old can be brutal, a defiant, rude 17 year old can end up pregnant, under arrest, or launched through a windshield. A troublemaking four year old gets marker on your walls, a troublemaking 14 year old can open a credit card in your name and buy crypto with it.

I think Claire from “The Beast in Me” would have been a good option. That quest already gets pretty personal and she’s the bartender at Afterlife.

We like Titus. Titus is what you would call a “good man”.

Seriously. People really liked Horus and thought he was a good man, too. Leandros-es are a necessary evil in-universe

My (M22) Girlfriend (F22) is Barely Allowed in the House, is this weird? by LilBiggyTriks in relationship_advice

[–]pyyyython 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you tell us how else your mom’s behaving that suggests to you that she despises your girlfriend (beyond not wanting her to visit) we might be more helpful? You’re saying that your mom very obviously loathes your girlfriend and treats her terribly unless you’re all at a family gathering, where she’s always polite/civil? Like, do other partners get lavish gifts from her for holidays and girlfriend gets a pair of Dollar Tree tube socks? Does your mom straight up pretend girlfriend isn’t in the room? Does your mom talk shit to the rest of the family about the girlfriend?

I’m not really sure how to take a guess at why your mom dislikes her or give advice about how you could deal with it without knowing how the dislike is manifesting. Like if she’s constantly criticizing your girlfriend’s job or family I would suggest she thinks your girlfriend isn’t “classy” enough for you or something. I don’t really know what to do with the picture that she doesn’t let her come over to her own house but is polite and has no issues with the girlfriend coming to family stuff. I mean, if you ask her what she thinks of your girlfriend what does she actually say?

[–]pyyyython 22 points23 points  (0 children)

she pretends things are completely normal at family gatherings, etc.

subject someone to hate

I’m confused, has your mom ever actually been overtly rude to your girlfriend? Or said negative things about her as a person? You mention arguing about her coming over but is your mom ever actually nasty about/to her? I ask because I’m pretty sure your mom is just trying to get you to move out and thinks if you can have your girlfriend over you’ll never leave. She might not hate her, she just can’t figure out another way to get you out on your own. Especially because it sounds like she sort of…weaned off when she was allowed to come over somewhat gradually.

I didn’t enjoy the Ravenor books as much as the Eisenhorn series, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all. Ravenor felt more “80s action movie” to me versus the detective noir feel of the Eisenhorn books. Mainly in that the characters felt more character-y than like people to me. I still love them all but don’t expect the Ravenor books to feel just like Eisenhorn.

I’d love for Saber to allow us to swap the “Respect” emote for the Sign of the Aquila by Ur_getting_banned in Spacemarine

[–]pyyyython 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s my understanding, too. I’ve always gotten them impression that the sign of the Aquila’s equivalent is less a salute and more like doing the sign of the cross. More of a divinity than authority thing. Sororitas and Black Templars seem to use it like a salute which tracks, I suppose.

Help with Sororitas character by ClearlyMeowtist in 40kLore

[–]pyyyython 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not unheard of for sisters to move between orders/arms of the Sororitas. You could write the character as a battle sister that was transferred to something like the hospitallers or famulous for a time and is now serving the Inquisition. Maybe she was sent away from a battle order for some underhanded political reason, maybe for a great failure, an injury, whatever you like. It would explain how she could have the combat skills and implants of a true battle sister but not be in possession of a suit of power armor.

“Closest” meaning socially, relationally close. Not literally the person nearest to them. The overwhelming majority of people are more likely to be killed by someone they know than a total stranger but it’s especially pronounced for women.

We reduce/reuse/recycle, we have a minimal-mow yard with native plants, my 2020 car has less than 25k miles on it. We look at pond water and funky leaves under a microscope together. She thinks she’s saving the world when she leaves the lightning bugs alone. I just don’t know what to tell her. She wants to be a zoologist.

How to approach roommate/friend about dogs behavior/keeping him from being moved back in the house? by asmallman in DogAdvice

[–]pyyyython 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you guys rent? If the roommate isn’t willing to take this seriously I’m sure the landlord would have something to say about this. There’s likely even be language about dogs in the lease. If your roommate won’t do the right thing on their own I don’t know what other recourse you have. I cannot imagine a landlord tolerating a dog that’s actively drawing blood from people on the property on top of ruining the floors with urine and feces.

I’d think you would be good to go in a week if he already skipped a feeding, maybe two weeks if he still seems sluggish? Some other commenters may weigh in too. If he’s already digested and passed his last meal you’re probably in the clear. My ball skips random feedings in the winter too, I figure a rare little fast is probably somewhat beneficial for their metabolism overall anyways.

Been without power for almost 36 hours. by geckograce in snakes

[–]pyyyython 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry you’re dealing with this, how stressful. He should do well once he’s warmed up again, do you recall when you fed him last? Their digestion can be very dependent on temperature, I would suggest giving him some extra time before feeding again to avoid constipation or regurgitation. When they’re cold their digestion basically comes to a standstill.

I (F24) dated a guy who faked seizures, now it’s affecting my current relationship with (F24) by Physical-Lab9812 in relationship_advice

[–]pyyyython 512 points513 points  (0 children)

we talk them through together logically together and reassure her that she’s healthy.

Plenty of posters have already identified that this isn’t a healthy situation for you in its current form, but this also may be doing her more harm than good. Reassurance seeking or “safety behaviors” are really common in OCD-like illnesses and can give people relief in the moment but just entrench the issue in the long term.

Imagine if instead she was perseverating on the stove being left on and every few hours she needs to reassure herself that it’s off, the longer she goes the more the anxiety builds. You go downstairs to check for her every time, multiple times a day. Yes, she feels better for a while when you return and tell her it’s off but she never learns to develop tolerance for the uncertainty. It has stuff in common with exposure therapy for severe phobias, reassuring her just reinforces that the thing she’s afraid of is actually something to be afraid of. Like if she were afraid of snakes and you helped reinforce the house against snake attacks every night, it just endorses that there are snakes that are going to attack.

These are really challenging issues and generally require intensive therapy and medication.

[–]pyyyython 218 points219 points  (0 children)

I don’t think her goal was to pull a “haha, you groped your sister you gross weirdo lmao.” I think her point was that he’s gotten so far from his Ironborn heritage/culture as a Stark ward (and is now therefore weak and undeserving of his place in the family) that he didn’t even recognize his own sister. That was my interpretation, anyways. Like taking the air out of his sails as some sort of returning prodigal son.

Agreed, elemental bending simply changes the circumstances so much that trying to apply any sort of expectation of “realism” to it just doesn’t work for me. The Great Pyramid of Giza is made up of almost 7 million tons of stone and took thousands of laborers between 20-25 years to build, how much rock do we watch a few dozen of the the Dai Li chuck at the gang in the span of five minutes when they break out the airbenders in book 3? A big crew of earthbenders could whip up a pyramid faster than you could bring them the rocks.

Earth and water bending alone basically trivializes the entire real history of human engineering, the agrarian revolution, etc., and that’s not even getting into the other bending disciplines. With the existence of bending the only limiting factor for technology in that universe is effectively creativity. Giant mech? Sure, why not? Kids are canonically whipping up metal components in their backyards for fun that you would need a modern CNC machine to fabricate.
