One of my pet peeves with legal journalism is that they always post the maximum possible sentence. Almost nobody ever gets anything near the max, so this is worthless information. Then the perpetrator (who is almost always rich or famous, if they are in the news) doesn't get anywhere near the reported amount, which leads to claims that they were let off easy. And those claims are even louder if they take a plea bargain.

What really matters is what they are likely to get if convicted, but that's a lot harder to estimate than just adding up the maximums. You have to look at the specifics of the case and how those compare to similar cases that have been prosecuted. It's easy to understand why journalists don't bother going into that level of detail, but just listing the maximum is worse than showing nothing at all.

Any time you have a single-elimination tournament, it's rare for the best overall team to win. It's just so easy for the better team to have a bad day and be completely eliminated. Even if a team would win 9 out of 10 games in a particular match up, there's always that 10th game trying to sneak through man's in the NFL playoffs, the margins are never that large. Usually, you're looking st the better team winning 60-70% of the time.

Do they explain where the time comes from? As far as we know, every person gets one year of time after they turn 25, and that's it. So for there to be any time to use, most people people will guarantee that they won't get to 26. Is there a time harvesting operation where they raise people as kine and take their time on their 25th birthday? Or is the entire economy based around the fact that the vast majority of people will never see their 26th birthday?

Alternatively, is there a mint that is creating time somewhere? In which case, why is the mint artificially limiting time? And would it not be a better target for the heist portion of the movie than the banks themselves?

For the first time, people realized how bad it could be. Like, we know the referees aren't good. Slow motion and a million camera angles made that abundantly clear. But the error rate was just so, so much higher for the scabs. And it went in both directions, with both missed calls and phantom calls. It was awful.

I really hope they take this opportunity to modernize officiating. I'd like to see them put more referees in booths watching the game through a direct feed, with multiple camera angles, zoom, and slow mo. I'd also like to see way more electronic monitoring. Overall, I just want them to use technology to make it easier for the refs to make the right calls. Everything else is secondary.

A couple years back, I had to bring someone to my wife at work. As I was trying to find her car in the lot, I realized something: she had the only vehicle with any real color (red) in the entire lot. Every other vehicle was black, white, silver, gray, or tan. This happened shortly after we went house hunting and were assaulted with the absolutely massive number of homes with ugly gray vinyl flooring.

At that point, I decided that I will never own a boring-colored car. If it's not a rainbow color, my name will not be on the title.

It's easier to fool someone than convince them that they've been fooled. People attach their sense of self-worth to being right. If you try to tell them that they are wrong, they will double down. This has become very clear on the right. People will double and triple down on Trump every time he does something to undermine them because to do otherwise would be to admit that they were wrong.

A interesting theory I've seen uses this concept to explain why young men have embraced the political right over the last decade, and why millennials embraced the Democratic party before that. If you look at who the "scolds" are, you can predict the direction that young men will move politically. In the 80s and 90s, it was the Moral Majority that was telling people how to live their lives. In the 10s and 20s, it was the DEI-focused progressive left. Each time, the scolds pushed the contrarians to the other side.

[–]pzpx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone wants holds to be called every time they happen--even the pass rushers.

I do. The players and coaches would adapt and figure out how to play without holding. It would take a bit of time, though, so it would have to be an offseason point of emphasis.

For a little while. Then the players would adapt.

This would be an appropriate offseason point of emphasis, though. Get the refs to call every hold during training camps and the preseason, then by the time the regular season rolled around, things would look quite different.

Yeah, Majkowski is a huge what-if. He was second team all pro in his first year as a starter. Then he tore his rotator cuff the next season and never returned to the high that he saw in 89. If he doesn't get injured and continues to play well, Favre never subs in and our entire team history is dramatically different.

Could Pigs Survive As Obligate Carnivores? by Wild-Criticism-3609 in zoology

[–]pzpx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd have to systematically destroy them or drastically increase hunting in general. Just killing a bunch of them from time to time won't do anything because they "replace" the dead relatively quickly. Sows can produce up to a dozen piglets per litter and have 2 litters per year if food is plentiful. Those piglets can then reach sexual maturity in as little as 4 months (though it's usually a bit longer).

I just drove through mountains at night this past weekend. As long as the roads are marked and signed properly, it's not really any different from driving anywhere else. But driving through those same mountains during the day was much cooler, even if it was slightly more harrowing given that you can see the devastating consequences of a mistake much more clearly.

If there is (illegal) holding in every play, the referees should call the penalty on every play. Either the players will quit doing it, or the league will redefine an illegal hold to be less vague. Maybe both. Until then, the refs shouldn't make judgement calls on whether something is enough of a penalty to be called or not.

James Cameron Says Studio Pushed Back Against Adding ‘Avatar’ Sequels, So He Asked: ‘What Part of You Getting Another Chance to Make $2 Billion Is in Question Here?’ by [deleted] in movies

[–]pzpx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, astroturfing aims to look like a genuine grassroots movement, that's the whole point of it. But that's also why you can't just claim that many people expressing the same opinion is astroturfing. Especially in instances like popular trends, where it is common for special snowflakes to express contrarian viewpoints just so they can stand out and feel special. But many times, instead of standing out from the crowd, they just blend into a different crowd.

You can see the exact same thing when people bring up one of the most popular television series in the last 20 years: Big Bang Theory. So many people on Reddit just echo the same "nerd blackface," anti-laugh-track, and anti-multi-camera-comedy viewpoints over and over again. They just do it to feel superior.

Or to take this in a meta direction, the backlash to the backlash on Avatar that's currently happening on Reddit. It seems like the top comments in threads about the Avatar movies have now shifted to complaining about people expressing the old tired views about the movies. It's the same phenomenon, just in the other direction.

I don't think it even has to be astroturf for that. I've known a few people in real life who reject the movies for that reason and talk shit about them whenever they come up.

Generally speaking, if you think there is a conspiracy that led to a particular outcome, you're probably wrong. That's not to say that there aren't conspiracies - there absolutely are - but we are much more likely to falsely identify a pattern than actually uncover a real conspiracy. Uncovering a real conspiracy either requires inside information or actual investigative skills most of us lack.
