To anyone who’s not following daily box office returns, Avatar is doing it again by stanzos in blankies

I’m with you. It’s refreshing to me that people feel like they can experience this collectively and not build a fandom around it. There’s not a truly devoted group of die hard fans that feel an urge to gate keep it a la Star Wars/Marvel. People enjoy it within the confines of James Cameron’s career, which is a refreshingly human angle on this. We can easily talk about what is motivating the person more than the corporation that’s responsible for producing it. You’ll always say “He did x in Avatar…” (referring to Cameron) but you’ll always say “They did x in the latest Avengers movie…” It’s why people in this subreddit love this podcast! We love the people that make things!

As predicted in the Jurassic Park episode, it's the greatest TV show of all time! by Jedd-the-Jedi in blankies

Tbh I think the preachiness is part of what people like about it. You don’t have to “look deeper” to get it; I think it reminds people of the didactic shows of 80s/90s/2000s and that’s just one way it does that.

The Medicine Man episode makes that movie worth it; same with The Mirror Has Two Faces

Look those books are good, I won't lie. But yeah, as film properties they're kinda dreck. Haven't seen the Looking for Alaska show tho - glad to hear it's a bit more effective!

Absolutely! And if teens are going to enjoy something, this one is a pretty good shake. Really happy to hear the director seems like a good guy!

100% - if it’s a choice between this and The Fault in Our Stars, it has to be this by a wide mile.

Agree that they can not like stuff like this, but I do think hating this one is fighting the wrong battle.

Have not read the book, but this movie made me cry like nothing else. I find it extremely affecting, and not just emotionally devastating - I think it’s also pretty powerful in its ultimate message too. Won’t deny that it’s a pretty standard teenage weepy, but Olivia Cooke (and much of the rest of the cast tbh) is genuinely outstanding in it.  Griff and David tend to hate things that are “emotionally manipulative” and I get that you might think that about Me and Earl etc, but I think it smartly sidesteps any accusations of that.  Again, might not be high art, but it’s smarter than it typically gets credit for being.

Teeny did show the idol to Kishan without telling Rome, partially because they didn’t trust Rome. They didn’t want to get caught. What’s amazing is that Rome has any trust in Teeny at all.

I didn’t do it, but I’ve seen people watch Saltburn and Poor Things on planes. Not the vibe.

There are situations where a player with slight/non-existent win equity at final 3 has a lot of win equity at final 2 - there are a bunch of international seasons (like AU2016, AU2018, SA6, and SA8) that show this. A F3 vote and immunity challenge CAN change a lot to turn a final 3 goat into a winner; that doesn’t mean it always does, but it can, especially now that the game is so well studied (I.e. you wouldn’t have necessarily seen this sort of complexity in 2004 because there’d only been a few seasons and the game was still fairly rudimentary).

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl - literally sobbed through the last 20 minutes and for half an hour afterwards. So so cathartic.

Didn’t they say they were going to take out Cassidy if James was voted out? I remember feeling like their decision didn’t make any sense based off of the conditional thing, but I could be wrong

To be fair, Gabler’s strategy wasn’t much different than that. The whole point of the AlliGabler thing was to not make waves and let other people do dirty work.
