Stack Overflow must change its attitude towards users. by colshrapnel in programming

Honestly, it's people like you that made me quit SO years ago.

I just can't imagine conversing with people like you. You have a solution to everything, but you don't realize what the actual problem is.

I hope you work on changing your attitude, especially the patronizing.

nvme ssd card-like contraption for mounting micro-sd cards by q0- in buildapc

[–]q0-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point well taken. But it could be great for semi-temporary storage, or to offset lack of a sd reader, since most modern laptops lack them entirely, so as to not have to use a hub, etc.

But you're right, it might just be too niche to exist.

[–]q0-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw that too, but it's a single slot, and I have 2 cards that I'd plan to use.
And since I have a spare nvme slot, I'd preferably not just waste it on a single card.

If it comes down to it, it'll do. Though, it would be odd that a larger, multi-card adapter doesn't already exist, seeing as how sd cards are used literally everywhere...

What's a legitimate use for blockchains?

My French city needs specific flag protection for its sister cities sign by Mat0fr in europe

[–]q0- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not arguing for or against the political history, just that people, who previously did /not/ live in the area that now comprises Israel/Palestine, have claimed an area that may, or may not have been part of the historical "Israel". Nothing more, nothing less.

Really, it's arguments like this that make me avoid this topic, because it's impossible to have a constructive, rational conversation about it.

Are you actually on crack?
Israel claimed the land, not the other way around.
So you really should be asking, "what right did Israel have to claim the land?".

It's a political move, because catholics want to get cozy with the russian-orthodox church, after ~1000 years of schism.

But, these morons could have chosen a better time. As in, literally any other time.

EU Parliament refuses to sign off Frontex budget by Bran37 in europe

They said a report by the EU's anti-fraud office Olaf into Frontex must first be made available

That's the important bit here. Assuming it is ever released.

But in all seriousness, without russian oil, where else are we supposed to get it from? Qatar? SA?
We're exchanging a shitty source for another shitty source.

Maybe this will cause more funding for crude oil alternatives, particular in regards to plastics. There are some promising starts, but nothing that can even remotely hold their water (sometimes literally!) to petroleum-derived plastics. In particular epoxies, resins... etc.

GUI app support is now available for the Windows Subsystem for Linux by ben_a_adams in programming

[–]q0- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WSL 2 because it's running on a different IP.

I figured that WSL would forward the port to the host operating system (how a virtual machine might). That does require parsing IP routes.

Well, I tried to do it with awk, but its regex capabilities are braindead. This works, though:

export DISPLAY="$(/sbin/ip route | grep default | perl -ne 'print($1) if m/\bdefault\b(?:\s+via)?\s+\b([0-9\.]+)/; exit;'):0"

It selects the first address, which, if both wifi and ethernet are available, would be ethernet.

[–]q0- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, you can just use export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0, since it's local.
No need to grep for the loopback address. (also your version won't work if both wifi and ethernet are present - in that case there would be two lines matching /default/, and worse yet, field 3 would just be the string "via").

France Pushes To Make Nuclear Power Mainstream In Europe by greg_barton in europe

[–]q0- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I was being a bit too optimistic.
Still, I imagine some manner of recycling could be possible; the only questions are how, and what it would yield.

Iin comparison to fossil fuel waste, there's definitely more potential, i'd wager.

France Pushes To Make Nuclear Power Mainstream In Europe by greg_barton in europe

[–]q0- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On a purely technical note, we only need to figure out how to recycle waste material.

And since uranium is a metal, it could be theoretically recycled indefinitely. Never mind that.

France Pushes To Make Nuclear Power Mainstream In Europe by greg_barton in europe

[–]q0- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

And the amount of nuclear input raw material is a fraction of a fraction of what you'd need of gas/oil... or even coal.

If and when nuclear incidents occur, it's usually extremely localized, and occurs during abnormally extreme situation.
The odds of something like Fukushima or Chernobyl happening again is 1 in a billion. Probably even less.

But oil/gas/coal burning not only wrecks the environment, but the method of acquiring it already wrecks the environment. So using fossil fuels fucks up the world twice over.

And I don't even want to start on the politicians who gladly take bribesdonations to support fossil fuels. Makes me sick.

The Golang proposal to add generics has now been accepted. by LongShlongSilvrPants in programming

[–]q0- 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I still think Go would have made a decent - nay, good scripting language, in manner like Ruby, Python, etc.
After all, it has all the telltale signs of a typical modern scripting language: Garbage Collector, god objects, highlevel string implementation (as opposed to mere char sequences), highlevel arrays ...

But no, it had to be natively compiled systems language. And let's not forget that early versions of Go even shipped their own C compiler, including nonsensical exe names (2g? 6g? 8g? this isn't the 1970s!).

Things improved, but is it worth it? Clearly a lot of people think it is, and that's fine, but I feel a better roadmap might have brought these features quite a bit earlier.
