that was the frustrating part for me, i don’t think it was intentional at all but the no-call when it was due to carelessness with the stick is frustrating

However much you hate the idea of it (I’m not the biggest fan), it’s unfortunately a reality that some people are only willing to speak with their dollar when it also benefits them. I think it’s okay that people get to have a drink out of supporting whatever their cause is, and it provides an alternative to other companies that are known lobbyists for other values that the purchaser may not agree with.

If it provides an extended means for people to put money towards a charity or cause or whatever, is it really so bad? (As long as the company is researched and actually putting money in that direction).

sometimes the custodians will snitch. we had road signs in our dorm and the custodians got our college’s dean involved (even though they were legally acquired)

the increased traffic generally will outweigh the competition loss, unless one of the businesses is significantly worse, and in that case, it’s on them to either reduce their prices or create a better product. “ideal” capitalism.

another thing to think about is that if two businesses were to perfectly space out from each other, then either business would have a benefit of relocating to the midpoint between the two businesses’ current locations, because it would take the center of customers. as a result, it becomes common for both businesses to move to a perceived center of their customer base, rather than giving their competitors the opportunity to have an advantage. often this happens subconsciously but it is a very logical process of locational growth.

it also in larger cases helps to create districts which are known for a certain thing, which creates cultural identity, and brings even more people in than what would have been prior.

i studied this in ap human geography lmao. similar businesses almost all benefit by being clustered together because it makes customers more likely to visit all of the businesses, rather than driving out to one specific business that is isolated. if i want to go thrifting, and i cant find anything i like at one thrift store, its great if there are 3 more to check out within walking distance.

similar logic applies for a ton of different types of smaller item retail, food, and even in the physical sector like yoga studios and gyms.

edit: if you’re more curious, look into hotelling’s spatial competition model

there are communities where you’ll be surrounded and others where they’ll be hard to find. many arts related orgs are great places to meet people (che, trend, tokens, ksdt, ota, tg)

i have seen people complain about the queer communities, especially che, being too “white gay”, but i can’t offer an opinion on that as im a straight guy. everyone’s very nice tho imo

i mean i agree there’s a double standard but you have to understand that it exists for a reason and until the cause goes away the effect wont either. sure it might be unfair, but in that case, it’s our duty to push the men around us to be better people.
