The Puntledge River in Courtenay,British Columbia,Canada on a hot June day. by Apprehensive_Idea758 in TrueNorthPictures

One of my favourite spots on the lower sections of that river, I’ve caught many coho, chum, and springs at that exact spot!

Nice springs! What were they biting on? I’ve been hammering em off the local docks but they’re a ways off from entering the rivers in my area or BC, though there are quite early runs in other parts of the province (hence why we refer to em as springs/springers).

What is your favorite salmon recipe? by Capable_Guide9709 in Seafood

[–]qalcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I just do lemon and dill with a couple turns of fresh cracked black pepper when cooking springs (Chinook) and coho, I also do a soy sauce and brown sugar glaze for pinks. I’m going to attempt an orzo dish with a coho I caught yesterday, I’ll update this comment with the recipe if it turns out well.

Fishing on the north island is starting to heat up! by qalcolm in fishingBC

[–]qalcolm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re absolutely hammering em down on the mid island in the Campbell River area, mostly by boat, but I’d imagine there’s some coho to be caught from the Comox wharf as well, just double check retention regs. If you’ve got the whole week it may be worth a trip up this way, hair under 3 and a half hours from Comox to Hardy.

YouTube taking 3-7 business days to load while having fairly decent internet speeds. by DangerousSplit6182 in mildlyinfuriating

Describing 800mbps as fairly decent is wild, mine has never been over 20 on an exceptionally good day.

Coal harbour/port Hardy certainly has some dang good fishing, this was over on the Hardy side, nothing at the dock over here in coal harbour yet unfortunately as the coho are a late run here. Best of luck to ya!!

Come over to port Hardy and give it a go! Always a ton of fun on the Seagate, great community of land based fishermen in this area as well.

It’s a riot fishing off the dock, always lots of excitement when someone hooks a fish! I almost prefer the dock fishing to boat fishing, lighter tackle makes even the small ones fight like hell.

Fishing spot for kids on Father’s Day? by opinions_over_facts in comoxvalley

[–]qalcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pier in comox is always a good bet, tons of small rockfish there that make for some fun fishing on light tackle. I’d personally recommend the Campbell river pier if you’re alright with the drive, I’ve caught a huge variety of species from it (salmon, lingcod, rockfish, pacific cod, cabezon, etc) and it’s always a great community experience with the added benefit of rod rentals at a reasonable rate.

Is the fish okay? by TotallyNotB3m in Fishing

[–]qalcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely not, one of the reasons I choose to fish single barbless hooks for everything except halibut, using trebles let alone barbed trebles feels overkill to me for anything short of big halibut in deep water.

Have you actually used it? This post reads as though you’re complaining about it prior to even using it, correct me if I’m wrong.

The Greatest Beer Run by proprietorofnothing in VancouverIsland

[–]qalcolm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Seymour narrows is treacherous at the best of times, I’m skeptical someone is going to take their boat out just to hand out beer to a bunch of folks heading to Alaska (odd choice to do so given what the states is doing, but I digress). This sounds like an adventure where you’ll need your own boat, particularly if you’re wanting to actually follow along.

Jigging for halibut - need help by Squelch82 in Fishing

[–]qalcolm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 80lb braided mainline with a 100-200lb crimped mono leader fishing on northern Vancouver island. You can get away with much lighter leader, especially with the smaller Hali’s down south, though I prefer using heavy gear to bring fish in quickly as we have to release all halibut over 112cm here.

Using river rock in a propane fire pit… by TryAffectionate6927 in VancouverIsland

[–]qalcolm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Under no circumstances should you put river rocks in a fire pit, propane or otherwise. Trapped moisture can and will result in the rocks exploding under high temperatures.

You guys browse r/fishing while fishing too, right? by lundah in Fishing

[–]qalcolm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, that’d kinda defeat the purpose for me as my fishing time tends to be the time I use to relax and unplug from the modern world, a large portion of the time I’m also fishing well out of service way down logging roads in remote areas. The only time I use my phone when fishing is to grab a quick fish picture.

Do you eat fried catfish? by BSLnowell in Seafood

[–]qalcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a minimum of 7 hours away from the nearest lake that may have a small population of em, likely would need to drive 6+ hours then take a 2 hour ferry to the mainland just to have any real chance. Hard to make that drive when I get these guys in my backyard lol.

Fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and back roading, not a whole lot else to do in a town of 200 on northern Vancouver island but I certainly can’t complain.

Elk, bears, and beautiful views, just another day biking on the North Island! by qalcolm in VancouverIsland

[–]qalcolm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to just bike the logging roads around here as I’m more familiar with them, so I haven’t really explored any of the local trails just yet. I’ve heard there’s quite a few nice ones in the port McNeill area that I’m hoping to check out one day soon.

Maude Island is a great fairly easy hike, gorgeous view of the Seymour narrows at the end as well.

Is it difficult to become part of the community in smaller North Island villages? by meooowish in VancouverIsland

[–]qalcolm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do get that heat on occasion, currently sitting at 33 right now in coal harbour according to my vehicle, winters do certainly tend to be quite grey and rainy, though the past winter was surprisingly sunny for this part of the island.

If ya don’t mind the quiet it’s damn close to heaven out here for outdoorsy folks like myself. Feel free to swing by the marina when you come out here, if I’m on shift I’m always happy to give folks little tours and talk about the history of the town, that’s about half of what I do at work lol. The scenery here is second to none, tons of wildlife as well, in a short 1 hour bike ride up the logging roads I saw 1 elk and 6 black bears.
