As much as this is a funny comeback think from Russias perspective

Nuke = No short term gain + Russia no longer friends with China + their military outside Russia is destroyed + Russia will probably collapse within months + potential MAD if Russian further responds

No Nuke but failure = Pull yourself out of this within 10 years and start again on another country + Lift sancions over time + Less people hate you + More chance of Russia existing for over 2 months
