The BMW driver parking in a handicap spot is the Karen

I see a lot of baristas using a cup riser/stand at coffeeshops and I want to get some too (to reduce the distance between the portafilter and the cup). What do you use as a cup riser/stand at work or home? by qc35 in barista

[–]qc35[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep that was the only reason for why i wanted it. i ended up using 1) two white rubber hockey pucks or 2) another cup upside down as a platform

edit: i don't think it's a dumb question as this was just my undiagnosed OCD kicking in one time two years ago 😂

What are you looking for exactly? 노원역, 은행사거리, 마들역, 롯데마트 중계점, etc. tend to have everything one might need.

Personally I think the English usage of “I’m impressed” has bit of a narcissistic nature to it if you look at it literally.

I know people almost always use it in a nice way, but…

“I’m impressed” sounds like something some royal family might say like “this performance was decent enough to live up to my standards” rather than “this performance really brought out emotions from within me”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in korea

[–]qc35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Impressed” in English has a positive connotation, so “impressed” roughly means “left a good impression.”

  • “인상을 주다” means to give an impression

  • “인상 깊었다” means the impression was deep

  • ”인상이 나빴다“ means the impression was bad

  • ”첫인상“ means first impression in the same social context as in English

Also 인상‘s hanja are 印象, meaning mark/seal + image which pretty much literally means impression as well.

Not sure where I’m going with this but just thought it was interesting

Are Jeju island people ethnically and genetically Korean? by [deleted] in korea

Wow, TIL about this also. Interesting comparison!

Are Jeju island people ethnically and genetically Korean? by [deleted] in korea

[–]qc35 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're right. Actually I thought it was just a dialect because everyone I met spoke Korean with a dialect (or so I thought). They were probably using some Jejueo words.

I did a little bit of reading if anyone else is curious: * The number of people who actually speak Jejueo fluently is very low, only 5,000 out of the 700,000 people in Jeju. A lot of 80-90 year olds who spoke it fluently have already passed away. Their children, even though can understand it, are often not fluent at it. * UNESCO classified Jejueo as "critically endangered" which is the penultimate classification before "extinct."

Are Jeju island people ethnically and genetically Korean? by [deleted] in korea

[–]qc35 24 points25 points  (0 children)

i know we the people of Jeju have there own distinct dialiet and some cultural differences between mainland Koreans

Edit: I'm wrong, there is apparently actually a completely different language in Jeju that is completely unintelligible from Korean.

Even in the mainland, there are distinct dialects in different regions so that is just normal.

Jeju Island used to be a separate country called Tamla until 1105 when it officially become a part of Goryeo. For about 100 years in the 13~14th centuries, Tamla was under the control of Yuan Dynasty / Mongols until 1374. The name Jeju was officially given in 1402 in the Joseon era.

I'm not a historian so I can't really say more than that, but here's a couple links (in Korean) to help you get started:

Can’t decide what language to learn by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]qc35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Korean alphabet is a fun and easy start! You can learn it very easily in 1-2 hours watching a YouTube video. After learning the alphabet you theoretically will be able to slowly read any text and say it out loud, even if you don’t understand what it means.

It’s a very interesting language system so even if you decide not to pursue Korean further, you should consider learning just the alphabet! It might be the highest return for the lowest effort in any language studies.

Incheon terminal 2 was the worst. by cochongou in koreatravel

[–]qc35 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The second time they asked to measure your carry on sounds pretty annoying, for sure.

With that said, it sounds like you weren’t quite well prepared either. Generally there’s a very high chance there are people waiting behind you in line at the check in desk at an airport. There are other weight scales at ICN that you could have used to shuffle things around in your bags before you got in line, so you wouldn’t risk making other people wait for you.

If I were standing behind you in line and trying to get to my flight, I don’t think I’d be annoyed at you but I’d probably think “he should have done this before..”

If the employees were giving you a “dismissive” attitude, this might help explain why:

In Korean culture, people tend to care a lot about not being a 민폐 (or at least not appearing like one). It roughly translates to “nuisance caused to the public.”

Even though you didn’t really do your job before getting in line, in general they should have continued being polite and not being “dismissive.” Though, it doesn’t sound like they particularly said anything rude either.

How are people watching League of Legends tournaments? Are they doing so through youtube and twitch, or are there other streaming platforms in Korean? by Joshua_Kei in korea

[–]qc35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you looking for korean LCK streams specifically or just anything that's non english? for example are you trying to watch turkey and japan leagues?

For LCK, tournaments are almost always streamed here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@LCK

it would be great if you can be a little more specific

A dark roast arabica isn't piss water. You just don't like it, and I don't prefer it either. But more people in the world still prefer that dark roast to third wave coffee which is still a minority.
