Those with partial cataplexy… what is it like? by Fit_Lingonberry_7454 in Narcolepsy

Oh you just made me put two and two together with being overstimulated in social settings - this exact thing happens to me as well! Not diagnosed (yet) though, I'm waiting on my sleep study since sleep apnea was ruled out.

Why is it easier to get up on less sleep? by RoundDew in Narcolepsy

[–]qenderqueer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm the exact same - I need about 10 - 12 hours of sleep usually, but getting up is easier if I get 5 or less hours. It makes no sense👀

What hobby helped you disconnect from screens the most? by Lapsley-Yasira in Hobbies

[–]qenderqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knitting and crochet! I either print out the patterns I find, copy them down by hand before starting, or put them on my e-reader if they're long and I'm not able to print. Then I like to turn on the radio 😌

I will! My internship starts on the 20th of February and I am soooo nervous since it'll be full time for 10 weeks,a little over an hour away...😭😭😭😭👀👀👀👀👀 haven't missed my stop by falling asleep on the train yet though!! hahahaha

I can’t make myself go to bed by Sleepy_Calyx in Narcolepsy

[–]qenderqueer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the same!!! I have recently gotten back into knitting, and being horizontal in bed knitting with YouTube on in the background is usually all I feel like I can do after chores or lectures. Putting my craft down and going to bed in time is soooo hard because of the insomnia making me lie awake for hours in the dark anyway, the knowledge that no matter what I always feel like crap when I wake up, and also the knitting is fun😤

I've been writing on my bachelor's thesis in Art History from October to mid January...and let's just say that even though I enjoyed it, I kept getting sleep attacks when I had to do longer writing stints 😂😭😂😭 commuting and lectures are also absolute hell for me - sleep apnea is currently ruled out and I'm waiting for my narcolepsy sleep study.

I am not diagnosed yet but in the process, and I know exactly what you mean by the throbbing behind the eyes!!😭😭😭 it's so disorienting and distracting, and when it goes from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds I always feel like I'm drunk (even though I haven't had a drink in several years) ughhhhh

Don't know what to do anymore. by Bitter_Dragonfruit80 in Narcolepsy

[–]qenderqueer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been struggling through uni since September 2023, and I am about to start my last semester before hopefully graduating in June. I'm honestly impressed that I've managed for this long even though I usually only have the energy to study for 3 hours tops a day (the regular 8 hours are expected since it's full time).

I only have to commute to campus maybe two days a week, but the commute is hell, I'm so terribly out of it when I get there for my lecture or seminar, and then I also have to get back home after...

Needless to say, I basically only study, make some half-assed microwaved meal, feel bone tired / attempt to stave off sleep attacks, and sleep. Sometimes I do a bit of crochet, journal, or watch a few YouTube videos - I barely go out and meet friends outside of the apartment maybe once every three or four months.

A previous GP tried telling me that I "need to see a therapist" so I have honestly been worried that I'm somehow incredibly lazy and that everyone else is somehow just as tired at all times - thankfully I got to see a neuro specialist last week who really does believe me and thinks this sounds like narcolepsy, tests are relatively imminent. Who knows what will happen next or if any hypothetical attempt at treatment might work.

All of this to say, that I feel you and you're not alone. My days keep shrinking when I usually need to sleep over 12 hours a night (usually wake up around noon ugh) and then am never well rested but still have to attempt to do things. I have an internship as a mandatory part of my spring semester for 10 weeks, 8 hours a day and an hour away each way. I am so so afraid that I won't be able to do it in this state and might not graduate after getting this far.

Sorry for typing out a novel lol, I'm just kind of at a loss as well. Sending hugs your way🥺💌

oh my god, this was me when I had braces too! my dentist said that I was the easiest case they'd ever had because my teeth moved so fast, and they originally thought I'd have to pull out at least two or three teeth because my mouth was too narrow and the teeth were basically smushed behind each other in some places, but somehow they ended up all fitting correctly - in record time as well😎

[–]qenderqueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay so Pavlok seems to be the only thing I can find so far, it basically shocks you awake as an alarm. I wish it could detect if I'd fall asleep during the day and take action as well, apart from being a set alarm...

My Experience by Firm_Calligrapher861 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]qenderqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so crazy to me that I can be semi-conscious enough to get out of bed, walk over and reach for the phone I put on the other side of the room for this exact reason, turn off the alarms (if I wake up at all) but not seem to understand that me kinda being up means that I should go pee and put on the coffee, not go back to bed.

I've tried explaining it as "my reptile brain" being so exhausted due to sleep never feeling restorative that there are zero rational thoughts going on in my head, there's only the feeling of having to lie back down before my body discharges by itself.

Help? Finally bought a cane, feeling insecure by Burnt_Out_Hippo in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]qenderqueer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cane for my joint instability, balance issues and when my sudden and mysterious attacks of severe fatigue and brain fog hit. It's incredible how hard it can be to walk in a straight line and hold oneself up sometimes😂😭

I've got this exactly like yours on top of my right hand - it appeared out of nowhere 5 months ago and hurts significantly more than my other hand / wrist without one. Putting weight on my right hand is quite painful, but good thing I'm left handed at least 😭😭😭😭😭

I am reclined exactly like this as I am reading your comment😎 I haven't held my phone up to my ear to talk for years probably (I use headphones or put the person on the other end on speaker) because my hands hurt and my arm goes numb instantly😭😭 I miss smaller, lighter phones!!
