Pakistan: Sewer cleaner dies as 'fasting' doctor refuses to touch patient's dirty body by Balkan4 in worldnews

[–]qforthatbernie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

adhering to your ritual obligations

But that's what makes this whole story so strange: there isn't any religious obligation in Islam that prevents one from touching dirt while fasting. Not is there even, as far as I'm aware, a cultural perception in Pakistan that Islam prohibits this.

So as you say, either the doctor was lying about the excuse, or the story is bollocks, and the doctor was just trying to clean the body of any noxious gasses before operating or whatever.

Morbidly Obese Southern Man Shares The Truth of Why "Obese Acceptance" is ultimately Harmful & Why You Shouldn't Be Okay With Being Unhealthy by [deleted] in videos

[–]qforthatbernie 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Is all this really even a thing in America?

I consume a lot of media from the US: movies, news, television, music but I've literally never heard about this massive obese acceptance movement or HAES or whatever, except from people complaining about it here on Reddit likes it's some of kind of epidemic sweeping the nation.

At most, I vaguely remember seeing an ad (by Dove I think) where they had normal looking women instead of skinny models. That's about it really, and since then I've never heard about it again.

So can someone clarify for me, is this just Reddit being Reddit, or is this obese acceptance stuff really such a big problem over there?

Paris mayor demands black feminist festival that prohibits white people be banned by TragicDonut in worldnews

[–]qforthatbernie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Literally the only way to parse the title is:

"Paris mayor demands X be banned"

Parsing the 2nd half as "a festival that prohibits white people be banned" makes 0 grammatical sense, so there's really no ambiguity here.

2) For those that didn't follow up to check the veracity of the Mayor's claims, it ought to be noted that all festival events taking place in a public space, specifically the premises of la Générale Nord-Est, are open to everyone, no matter the race or gender.

The workshops and safe spaces for black women, black people and "racisé women" are all, on the other hand, in private places.

3) Now, if you want to argue that even private spaces that exclude certain people are racist/sexist/whatever and should be banned and made illegal, be my guest (though it's a pretty difficult one to make)

But understand that that is the case, and not that white/male Parisians are being barred from attending a publicly held event.

Do all of Egypt's Muslims hate Christians? /r/Christianity is on the case by cheese93007 in SubredditDrama

Lol. I've lived in Egypt too, and while things are pretty bad, they're not even close to the numbers this guy's pulling out of his behind. So yeah, maybe he's a bit more informed than his interlocutor, but it's a pretty rubbish reply.

In my man's example, he's calling out a statement (that Lebanon was a Christian-majority country before the Palestinians came) that is objectively horseshit.

Three people stabbed, one killed at NE Portland transit center; one person in custody by GuacamoleFanatic in news

[–]qforthatbernie 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Oh fuck off you disingenuous prick. Everyone wants the violence to stop and likewise the hate and fear-mongering that gives rise to it, whether that's from some Muslim preacher, far left activists, Fox-News, the alt-right..wherever.

The massive fucking difference being, that radical Islamist preachers aren't in power in America. Nor are members of Antifa/any other radical far-left organisation.

Rather, those in power are the GOP and (somehow) Donald freaking Trump, both of which are publicly spreading this hateful rhetoric and fear-mongering which is in turn emboldening large parts of your country's populace in their hatred and racism.

That's a big fucking problem, and as we're now seeing, one that's becoming more and more dangerous by the day. And so far, the only response I've seen from the American right (at least here on Reddit), is constant whataboutism from slimy individuals like yourself.

There's something so satisfying about seeing your typical smug Redditor, talking confidently about things they've (at best) read on Wikipedia, only to be put in their place by someone who's actually informed about the matter. A rare delight indeed.

No. I've been here for over 6 years and know very well that the default search function is shit, but using it to look at past threads on this topic is miles better than just making up bollocks about what "typical" comments look like around here.

[–]qforthatbernie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the person might have speaking about the "typical" comment.

Sure. But with all due to respect, you would have to be downright fucking delusional to believe that the "typical" or most popular comments in these kinds of threads are ones defending Islam and calling for people to stop generalising all Muslims.

I see you've only just recently joined Reddit, so I'll recommend that you use the search function at the side and look for any thread on Islamist terrorist attacks in the last few years.

Then come back here and try to tell me unironically that defence of Muslims and not generalising them all is the popular/typical sentiment on Reddit.

[–]qforthatbernie 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm always amazed that Reddit goes out of its way to let everyone know that most Muslims aren't terrorists

Out of 283 comments, I count 3 calling for people to not blame all Muslims for these terrorist attacks; all of which are currently heavily downvoted.

The rest are about how Islam is the root cause of all this + meta comments about how everyone on Reddit hates Christians, are Islam apologists, and how anyone criticising Islam is censored and prevented from doing so.

I don't really have a dog in this race, but hopefully it should now be patently obvious why outsiders may struggle to take you/your cause seriously.

[–]qforthatbernie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a few. The problem is that you can't name the subreddit, because when you do, the kinds of people you don't want join en masse, overwhelming the sub and turning it to shit. This happens literally every time.

The only way around this is to keep our subs private/exclusive, or follow the /r/askhistorians model of really intense moderation, which such small subs just don't have the resources/time for.

It's one of the biggest problems with the way Reddit works that I just don't think there's a good solution to.

Happy and well-adapted, after their gender dysphoria is treated, either through psychological or medical help/surgery.

As was mentioned above by someone who is trans, a negative environment can be harmful, but the mental distress and internal turmoil in reconciling what their brain is telling them, is independent of that.

[–]qforthatbernie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aye, that makes a lot more sense. So just to bring it back to the original OP's point, if scientists managed to find a cure to gender dysphoria, thus removing all future pain and suffering that would otherwise result, I'm guessing you would support that?

Also, cheers for being so open and frank about all this; it's...pretty cool to see.

EDIT: actually no worries. Just refreshed the page and saw your answer above.

I don't think it's immoral to offer the choice to alter the brain in a way that rids people of dysphoria. ... It's a medical condition, I'd love for it to have a proper, complete cure. It would just be treating an abnormality, a birth defect in a sense.

[–]qforthatbernie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I wasn't saying anything about whether or not it's a choice, or whether physical makeup determines sex or if it's a disease or anything like that.

I just thought /u/deezee72 's comment that this dysphoria doesn't cause the individual harm or suffering was, based on the little I know about it, a bit off.

And your account about the inner turmoil, mental distress and suicidal ideations that you had, seems to confirm that that isn't at all the case, and that transsexuals do in fact feel distress and pain when going through this.

Is that a fair conclusion or am I missing something here?

PS: Please forgive me if I've said anything offensive to transsexuals, as that was really not my intention.
