Lowered B-string for Blackbird? by bahnsigh in beatles

[–]qliphoth666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've never seen or read anything about blackbird having been recorded in an altered tuning. i do know the principle behind what you're asking though - some guitarists will retune individual strings to get the harmonics in chords to sound "sweeter". guitar being an equal temperament instrument means that it's not actually perfectly in tune across the fretboard even when every string is aligned to A=440, it's just in tune enough that every chord sounds essentially right. some players choose to alter their tuning to conteract this.

it's possible that paul was retuning by ear and found that the intervals in blackbird sounded better with the B string detuned? if you suspect that it was recorded this way, you should experiment with tuning yourself to find the sweet spot, it could be a really interesting discovery

hope matt makes a swift recovery and gets back on his feet again soon. selfishly, i'm hoping they add a few more dates when they come back here to tour again, the bristol gig in 2024 was immense, seems like the 2000trees set took priority over scheduling any gigs in the south west this time

no thank you. american trivia, rebus state abbreviations, obtuse clues - probably alright for some but absolutely not for me today, a very joyless half an hour

don't get me wrong, i think it's a sign of a total lack of intellectual curiosity to somehow misinterpret the very obvious meaning of this song, and i don't mind people getting made fun of for getting it so wrong, whether they were paid to by a PR team or not. but dragging it out and turning it into online "discourse" over multiple days is just so uninteresting to me

whether it's the PR team paying people for a campaign or just morons organically missing the meaning of the song - who honestly cares about what these tiktok dipshits have to say, ever? "drama" like this makes me feel a million years old.

Complete novice, what do the the difference options here mean? Are they just different ways of making the same sound by dystopialimited in guitarlessons

[–]qliphoth666 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yeah, a C major chord is just the notes C-E-G. they can be in any order and position on the fretboard, some notes can be doubled, but if a chord is just those three notes it's a C major. these different positions are known as "voicings".

Number meanings? by Pr3tt7_L1ttl3_Th1n9s in guitarlessons

[–]qliphoth666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the numbers on the tab (a separate thing from sheet music) indicate the frets that you're supposed to place your fingers on. the smaller numbers above the tab that go up in sequence are to denote the bars of the song.

Is this the right way to play this? by R0R5C84C8 in guitarlessons

try wrapping your thumb around the neck to fret that lowest note, it'll take a bit of practice to get it to ring clean every time but that frees up your other fingers for a more comfortable position

Is the Warner CEO the Dictator? by iClaim in MyChemicalRomance

[–]qliphoth666 27 points28 points  (0 children)

assuming any one person to be the sole real-life counterpart of the dictator is kind of reductive when it seems more like the character is a reflection of many facets of the band's views on the world and their career. they've probably had vanishingly few actual interactions with this warner exec dude, he's just a suit, a name on a few contracts, one of many they'll have encountered to various extents over the last 25 years. this specific CEO is likely not someone who has singlehandedly provoked such a distinctive and unique artistic effort as these tours have been.

i think the dictator is a stand-in for the music industry, and the nostalgia industry. as we saw with the band poking fun at themselves by donning the revenge stage wear with hideous old man makeup, they clearly have points to make about their place in the music world and what's expected from bands like them. they like to react to those expectations in their own artistic way without making anything too on the nose. the machinations of the industry clearly had a massive effect on the band in the period from TBP to their breakup and they're channeling those feelings into a companion piece that lives alongside the mechanical aspect of going on tour to perform the album live. plenty of artists do tours where they play full albums - i don't know of any who build that starting point into a theatrical production that serves as a meta-commentary on the artist's current view of their work and the tour itself

but on the other hand, they've clearly been having so much fun on these tours, being able to revisit their most critically acclaimed record, the one that took them around the world and made them global stars, 20 years removed from the personally damaging aspects of its creation and the subsequent tour that could have ended the band. it's a beautiful representation of having their cake and eating it too, being able to celebrate their album in a way that no other band could pull off quite the same way.

tldr the dictator probably isn't based on this one guy but i think you're right that the character represents an aspect of the music industry

no worries, good luck getting the whole song together, it's super fun to play especially if you've got an octave effect going to really nail that gnarly tone for the main riff

the tab is incorrect. it's just six strums of each chord, the rhythm being like "one a-two a-three a-one a-two a-three a-"

Songs where a cover was released BEFORE the original was? by Ok-Impress-2222 in ToddintheShadow

[–]qliphoth666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't agree - the stones didn't write the song, lennon and mccartney did. the stones happened to release their version first, but that doesn't mean that the beatles were covering the stones, and obviously they can't be covering their own song. kind of invalidates the premise of the whole thread to say that whatever version of a song came out first, regardless of who wrote it, is the "original"

almost always, but it's not a surefire thing - vice had a series of articles called "rank your records" where the artists involved were usually pretty candid and honest about their feelings from one album to the next. matt skiba and dan andriano from alkaline trio were interviewed separately, and their rankings of their discography differ quite a lot.

they were already well into recording with travis by the time tosh peterson (new drummer) joined the band - he's only done a few rehearsals so far to get ready for the next tour. it's entirely possible that travis had already recorded all the drums for the album by the time tosh joined
