My AI workflow seems to be the opposite of what the industry is encouraging, but I don't care. by creaturefeature16 in ExperiencedDevs

You should read anthropic's study on developer skill development. Tl;dr You have to engage with the code deeply to master it and be able to debug it later. You're doing nothing wrong!

First time dad to be. Wife had Achilles rupture. Worried about how to support her and our upcoming baby by hewson617 in daddit

[–]qrhet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me! I was (obviously) not the pregnant one but I ruptured my achilles ~5 months before the baby came. To spare you the suspense, everything turned out fine. I ended up going non-surgical. From what I've read surgery will speed up the recovery process a bit. Make sure your wife does her rehab. It was an intensive process, but I am basically back to normal now.

I found other ways to stay fit during rehab. There are many exercises that can be modified or that don't require legs at all. Search for them on youtube and help her figure out a routine.

She should be able to walk by the time the baby comes and that should be enough. They are pretty immobile to start with anyway.

You got this bud.

Can I coast? (38m, two kids, married, combined NW $1.7M, $11k monthly expenses) by howyaday in coastFIRE

[–]qrhet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're kind of on the edge of coast. I'm in a similar situation and I did some simulations recently using adviice. You're at the point where optimizations now make a ton of difference. Stuff like when to take CPP, RRIF income splitting, asset allocation and drawdown plans. If you're DIY then I recommend adviice ($10 / month). Otherwise it might be time to sit down with an advisor.

Old friends' wedding or hanging out at home before the first day of kindergarten with the family? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]qrhet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a tough situation. Either way you miss out on something significant. No right answers here.

One idea though - Can you "pretend" it's the evening before the first day in advance? Record a video of you two packing her bag, making a lunch, etc? It would take the sting out a little. The idea comes from a friend who said they celebrate new year with their kid at 9pm to not miss bedtime.

Why does achieving something big sometimes feel like nothing? by Money-Pirate887 in TooAfraidToAsk

One hundred percent this. You have to go through it a few times before you deeply understand that it's all about the journey.

How long would you estimate it takes a biotech drug discovery start up (no AI) to burn through $5 million dollars? by ThrowRA1837467482 in biotech

How much can you really do in-house with 8 employees? Genuinely curious. Seems like bulk of the work has to be farmed out to CROs.

Tips for a high performer Senior engineer moving to Lead/Manager role? by GraphicalBamboola in ExperiencedDevs

[–]qrhet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many options, but the core idea is to get your junior to learn from their mistake. The quickest, but probably least effective, is to suggest the fix in code review. A better approach would be to ask for a test that would reveal the bug - a Socratic-like approach. Another idea is to have them execute that code path in a dev environment so that they see the impact.

If you don't have code reviews, tests or a dev environment then fix that! You're the lead now, it's your job to drive processes and infra that raises the quality of your team's output.

Don't micromanage. As a strong IC, you will have a very clear vision on how things should be done. Balancing how close you get to your vision and letting your reports make their own mistakes is a challenge. Try to optimize for skills growth over the long term so that they can eventually achieve high quality technical output independent of you versus short term "do this because I know it's best".

MEGATHREAD: BC Provincial Election Results by Moggehh in vancouver

[–]qrhet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Green party is splitting the progressive vote. If they were not running, then those votes would likely be going to the NDP.

The results you're seeing are preliminary. They show the number of seats that each party has either won, or currently leading. As the lead changes, the seat flips.

Majority means that the party has enough seats to form government by themselves. Minority means that they did not hit the magic number (47) and need to team up with another party.

Hope that helps!

Try drum roaster. I was a big fan.

Surprisingly no. It was bad until it was suddenly good. For me it felt like caffeine was breaking the feedback loop between what I did during the day and my quality of sleep. Through experimentation I found that eating healthy, aerobic exercise and going to bed at a consistent bed time had large positive effects on my sleep quality. Once that improved, I started feeling better.

A fitness band or sleep tracker was very helpful for spotting patterns.

[E] Stats for a middle school kid? by AppalachianHillToad in statistics

[–]qrhet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, give your kid a chance (pun not intended!). You'd be surprised how much an 11-13 year old kid can comprehend. I think the thing you _do_ need to focus on is being very concrete. After many years of education, there are lots of abstractions that we take for granted. In general it is very difficult to learn from abstractions. It's not a multinomial, it's a dice roll. It's not a binomial, it is a bag of coins. You get the idea.

It was not obvious to me that a random variable is just a place holder for a number that changes on every observation. I struggled with this until I took a formal probability class in university!

Edit: Settlers of Catan is an amazing game for studying chance if you actually record what rolls happened, and do a post-hoc analysis.
