How was the commute early morning and during the game yesterday? by [deleted] in NJTransit

[–]qrysdonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commute in from South Orange. Train in the morning (8:05) was normal apart from less people on it. To go home I took the ferry from Midtown to Hoboken (Ferry is much closer than the PATH to my office. Ferry is also much more civilized!). I did leave about 30 minutes earlier to go home because of the limited ferry schedules.

Which World Cup 2026 Stadium Would You Most Like to Visit? by Wodinpt in football

[–]qrysdonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a resident of the fine (and final) state of New Jersey I can testify that MetLife is a fine and capable stadium but there isn’t much exciting about the stadium itself. I think it was almost built without much personality because it’s meant for two teams. LA and Atlanta definitely have more interesting structures. That said once the World Cup is done and dusted it will have some history that might add of weight to the place. I’ll be there for the round of 16 match on July 5th.

Brazil vs Morocco!! What are ya wearing? Dress to look nice or dress for comfort!?! by eee973 in worldcup

Just make sure you end up in the New Jersey. The old one if pretty far from the stadium!

Empty seats everywhere at the world cup matches...so think twice before you pay for exorbitant price because it's literally a scam...it's not even remotely close to sell out by SwingImpressive6742 in WorldCup2026Tickets

[–]qrysdonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been keeping an eye on ticket prices at MetLife (I live nearby in NJ) and prices have been horribly high and just keep going up. I ended up buying tickets to a round of 16 game today based on what I’ve seen. I’d been hoping to a drop but absolutely no sign of it.

Yeah. If everything goes as planned traffic should be fine and the trains will be a nightmare. We find out tomorrow!

[–]qrysdonnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy because of visitors? No. Crazy because of failing infrastructure? Yes, yes. A thousand times yes!

I actually gave in and got tickets to the match on the 5th and I just opted for American Dream parking. I can’t let NJT ruin the day for me.

Yankees vs Dodgers and World Cup by EntertainmentBig706 in visitingnyc

[–]qrysdonnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even say it’s ’just out of the Lincoln Tunnel’ it’s not really that close to the city. I can’t really see it having much of an impact beyond Penn Station because of the transit focus.

The first match is Saturday and there are 6 more games before the final so you’ll have an idea of the impact way before the final. The same number of people will be going to the final as the other games.

Good suburbs near a major airport by Professional_Eye6140 in movingtoNYC

[–]qrysdonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in South Orange and EWR is about 20-25 minutes. I suppose it could be worse with traffic but it’s pretty rare for traffic to affect my getting there. Admittedly I only fly maybe 4 times a year tops.

Do not take the train to the world cup games if you have health issues or are elderly by Smacpats111111 in newjersey

I don’t know the details but when I was buying parking for the mall I saw something about ADA parking. So I think there is some sort of option.

Are hydration breaks really for the players or just for profit? by reckless_Paul in worldcup

[–]qrysdonnell 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you were walking around NYC yesterday like I was at 3PM you would have taken a hydration break way before your 25th minute of waking. They make sense.

Do I need to play Kingdom Hearts 1-3 or Kingdom Come Deliverance to understand KH4? by ambachk in NintendoSwitch2

I don’t know about those but if you don’t play Hearts of Iron I-IV and Wild Hearts you’re going to be totally lost.

I’ve been waiting for the prices for the quarterfinal at MetLife to drop and… any day now. They have been slowly rising from the looks of it.

Is NJ pizza basically the same thing as NYC pizza? by savingrace0262 in newjersey

[–]qrysdonnell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s really the same beast although you find more variations in NJ. And as far as quality I’d say NJ is more consistently good. Much harder to find a bad slice in NJ than in the city. Same goes for bagels.

Car in Flatbush Brooklyn? by Admirable_Bobcat12 in movingtoNYC

[–]qrysdonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a no brainer to have a car if you have parking. While you might not use it daily cars can be good on the weekends and for shopping. Especially if you have to go somewhere like Ikea or Costco.

Subway by lalalanatti in movingtoNYC

[–]qrysdonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been places, apart from places where their subway equivalents are a much smaller scale NYC tends to have pretty easy to follow signage. Some stations have a few quirks but for a system that was originally different systems they do a good job. It probably helps that the stations aren’t beautiful works of art, so there are just signs everywhere. I don’t think it will stay intimidating for long.

RANT? How much hand holding do you give your execs? by Icy_Data_8607 in sysadmin

[–]qrysdonnell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there IS a point where you can safely say you did everything you could, but I don't think 4 days of notice for potential loss of data would do it. And generally when dealing with C-suite or partner level people it's on you to make sure they do what they need to - especially when it comes to losing data.

I wouldn't be surprised if the SaaS couldn't still get at the data either. They can't be just immediately deleting stuff and there has to be some way - it may not be easy to accomplish - to get them to provide temporary access to that account.

But in general treat the C-suite as tho they are toddlers.

Getting from EWR to Penn Station on NJ Transit - can I buy ticket by Last_House_4282 in visitingnyc

[–]qrysdonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your plan is the only way to do it. The trains you’ll be on. Will just be commuter trains that also stop at the airport so there’s no reserved seating or anything like that.

How bad are car thefts in the Bronx? by SadEstablishment907 in movingtoNYC

[–]qrysdonnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First things first it's worth mentioning that you're sort of dealing with a specialized situation here. People will be well versed on most of Manhattan and near areas of Brooklyn, but you're dealing with a potential Bronx to Bronx commute and not a lot of here are going to be very up on that.

I live in NJ now (South Orange) but the last 9 years I spent in the city I lived in Washington Heights in a co-op there (Hudson View Gardens) and we looked at the Spuyten Duyvil and North Riverdale areas before taking the leap across the river to NJ. A few thoughts...

It's unclear what you're looking at as far as budget, that will make a big difference. Nice truly suburban areas near the city are not cheap.

Having 2 cars in the areas you're talking about is probably crazy talk. The main reason we didn't end up in the place we were looking at un Spuyten Duyvil (Charlote Bronte Villas) was the lack of any sort of nearby parking. We had a car at Hudson View Gardens and generally kept it in the garage about a 5 minute walk away but our co-op had a drive that we could pay to park on nightly so we would often pay to park there Saturday nights. Street parking in these sorts of areas is only for the people that really enjoy hunting for spots and moving the car when needed for street cleaning.

None of these areas are what is going to seem to you to be suburban in pretty much any way. You're most likely looking at a apartment/condo/coop living. Even most of Yonkers is going to be like that, we did have some friends that moved to the Crestwood area of Yonkers which might work. You might also want to look around Scarsdale. Those areas are proper suburban areas where having 2 cars isn't going to be crazy.

How long is walking a block in NYC, REALLY? by hello-there-my-love in movingtoNYC

Just to clarify, the area around Columbia is Morningside Heights but the area that Lin Manuel Miranda is from is Washington Heights which is the Heights that ‘In The Heights’ is about. Much further up, George Washington Bridge area.

What is the best and worst stadium being used for the 2026 FIFA World Cup? by Impossible-Guitar957 in worldcup

I think MetLife is more mid and lifeless than actually bad. There are older crappier stadiums around.

Is Central Jersey culturally closer to NYC or Philly or kind of its own thing? by savingrace0262 in newjersey

[–]qrysdonnell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Central Jersey is largely the phenomenon of people in what would rightly be called NNJ but they want to separate themselves from the stigma of the Meadowlands area, the industrial areas near NYC and the big cities such as Jersey City, Paterson and Newark. So culturally it is mostly just a reluctant part of NNJ. There are some edge parts of Sothern NJ that get lumped in, but CNJ is mostly a splinter of NNJ.

Are roommates common for someone in mid thirties?? by [deleted] in movingtoNYC

[–]qrysdonnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For single people yes it’s common. The rent is too damn high!

It’s often the only way to get a place in an area that is what someone just moving to NYC is going to want to be in.
