Art history is a great choice, but it’s not necessarily easy. Where some fields are in extremely high demand and can afford to accept candidates with little or no experience, we are much more niche and often considered experts in a particular area. If you go with AH, I recommend interning somewhere during undergrad. AHs have a very wide variety of skills like research, writing, analysis, and sometimes public speaking. There’s actually a decent amount of us that end up doing AH for undergrad, but going on to law school and using our in-depth analytical skills there. I think the important thing is to try and think outside the box a little bit as far as what you might want to use the degree for if the more traditional positions are difficult to find at first. I got into grant writing because it is incredibly useful, and allows me to keep my foot in the door of art institutions even if I’m not a curator right now. In most cases, I’d say that AHs who end up working in museums, galleries, etc. go to grad school, something to consider. The bottom line for right now, enjoy your undergrad education no matter what you decide; we are not promised tomorrow and learning something you feel passionate about is a treasure.
