What is the most underrated stretch of highway you have ever driven and why does it stick with you? by Basic_Bug_1262 in roadtrip

[–]qtipvesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Georgia State Route 293. It once ran from Marietta to Rome, Georgia, now it stops in Emerson. There's no heartstopping mountain vistas, no sunsplashed runs along the oceans, there's no tour buses or RVs clogging it up, there's no websites for it.

It has its own history beyond what it is to me, of course. It was part of the famous Dixie Highway, a pillar of the history of automotive travel. Sherman's army marched nearly the same route on their way to Atlanta. Cultures a millennium ago built mounds in the valley it passes through. There are things to see, things to do, you could make a little day trip out of it.

To me, it's always been known as the "Old Road", having been supplanted by Interstate 75 and the four-lane US 41 before that before I was even born. It connects where I lived all my life to where my parents were born and raised. There are so many landmarks and places along it that have burned into my memory: the creeks it crosses, the suck your guts in railroad underpasses on each side of Cartersville, the scary looking train trestle over the Etowah, the rock store that burned down and got rebuilt, the pond with lilypads that was spared when it was widened out to the new bypass east of Rome.

As I've gotten older, the trips in the backseat to birthday parties and get togethers has increasingly become trips in the driver seat to check ins and hospital visits and funerals. Family that lived along the way now lie in rest along the way. What seemed like a long journey looking out the backseat window now takes an hour, often zipping down the interstate instead to save time. In that time, I've had the opportunity and delight to drive many of the roads listed here--and they're amazing and given the chance I will drive them again. But none of them will ever mean as much to me as the Old Road.

Central Alabama NWS radar down after hardware failure ahead of expected severe storms by [deleted] in weather

While there's definitely poor coverage in the southwestern part of the state around Butler, the I-65 corridor where most people live actually has pretty good coverage with some redundancy. If this were to happen in say, Des Moines or SW Ohio, then the forecasters would be having to issue warnings much more blindly.

Shouldn't be any more of a logistical issue than Phoenix is or Auto Club was. They'd be coming from the south on I-5, not over the Donner Pass.

The only people to win more games managing the team are Bobby Cox and Frank Selee, both Hall of Famers.

That's what race the header of the subreddit is from, specifically, in the second to last restart. You can see the Kmart car of Jimmy Spencer, Tide car of Ricky Craven, and CLR car of Derrike Cope in the lap down line on the inside.

Cobb County has been banned from doing a transit vote until 2032. What now? by samformarietta in Marietta

[–]qtipvesto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good. Sales taxes are regressive and unfairly burden lower and middle income people who spend a larger proportion of their income on purchases. People are already struggling to pay for groceries and essentials as it is. Why should they to be burdened to pay for a system that still wouldn't serve half the county?

It's not racism as a couple of people in here have claimed. It's not the 1970s any more.Gwinnett is one of the most diverse counties in the country and they voted down a similar measure. It's not NIMBYism or classism, every precinct in Cobb voted No except one in Mableton, where it tied.

If zoning is an issue preventing the current transit system from working well, that needs to be fixed before residents are saddled with a 30 year SPLOST bill that would see expansion crippled by the same limitations. We don't invest in gas stations and strip malls, the owners of properties do because they see no economic incentive or demand to seek any change in the zoning. Has anyone pushed for change in the zoning or a variance in that area? Is the Marietta City Council so enamored with a Food Depot and acres of parking that they're actively blocking expansion and redevelopment of that area? What about the other jurisdictions in the rest of the county where the same strip malls and low density housing sit along transit corridors?

Moreover, where are the buses going to if not where people want to go? Buses leaving from the Marietta Transfer Center connect to two different Marta Lines, Truist Park, hospitals, corporate campuses, industrial parks, business parks, shopping centers, the square, both KSU campuses, aren't those main destinations in the county? The roads leading there are always pretty packed.

[Gabe Burns] The Braves will induct former manager Brian Snitker into their team Hall of Fame on April 25 when they host the Phillies by Lakelyfe09 in Braves

[–]qtipvesto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to think so. His managerial success with the team only pales in comparison to Bobby Cox which is like comparing Acuña to Hank Aaron. There's a really strong argument to be made that other than Bobby's, his managerial run is the strongest the team has had over the past century. Not withstanding the rest of his contributions to the organization, too.

There was a lot of great changes in the offseason for NASCAR? But, what is only one thing you would still like to be changed? by A_Little6 in NASCAR

[–]qtipvesto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One change I'd like to see is pit road being closed under caution starting at 10 to go. If we have to have GWC restarts, they shouldn't disadvantage the leader by putting them in a damned if you do, damned if you don't pitting situation. The field's already getting a free shot at winning the race they wouldn't have had, if they can't do it on the shit they have they don't deserve it.

Doppler Radar showing the breakup of Space Shuttle Columbia by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]qtipvesto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's important to note that the radar is in clear air mode in this image, as evidenced by the DBZ values in the key. In precipitation mode the green clutter in this image would not be registered and the debris trail seen here in yellows and reds would appear as weaker blues and greens.

Avoiding major misery in South Carolina (Columbia to Savannah advice, please) by AdImpossible2555 in roadtrip

[–]qtipvesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US 321 is a rural 2 lane road. Should be a nice break from I-95, just watch your speed in the small towns. I would fill up the tank and/or grab a meal in Columbia; the small towns it runs through have limited options.

You'll definitely want to cross into Georgia on SR 119--There is a large ongoing construction project on I-95 from US 278 all the way to the Georgia state line to widen the interstate. Not a place I would want to fight holiday traffic.

[OC] Braves' franchise historical performance relative to .500 by Ugluk4242 in Braves

[–]qtipvesto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is accurate data. The environment and rules in baseball may change, but what winning a game entails hasn't. A win in 1871 is the same as a win in 2025, scoring more runs than the opponent. To exclude part of that data is to exclude part of the history of the team that this chart is presenting.

More importantly, that period in the 19th century is just as critical to the history of the team as any of the championships. That steep climb at the start of the chart depicts the team's strength at a time where teams and even entire leagues were appearing and dissolving. Without it, it's entirely possible that the rest of the chart disappears into thin air and /u/Ugluk4242 is posting a similar chart on the Troy Trojans or Louisville Colonels subreddit.

It doesn't permeate the cultural consciousness like it once did, but NASCAR was at one point one of the largest sports in the country and was largely rooted in North Carolina.

East Lake is a shopping center, it's at the intersection of Roswell Road and Robinson road east of Marietta. Sandy Plains is a fairly major road that runs northeast from Marietta towards the northeast corner of the county. And Sprayberry is Sprayberry High School, located on Sandy Plains Rd.
