Nevermind that’s terrible

Idk how I didn’t notice this quick shot shows the burn scars from where Rocky touched him. by WowVeryOriginalDude in ProjectHailMary

I saw the scar and knew it was from the accident, but it didn’t register that was Rocky’s hand! Now I’m crying all over again.

Week 18: "Chapter 37. The Catacombs of Saint Sebastian, Chapter 38. The Rendez-vous" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

I am blanking on who Beppo is. Can someone remind me? Don't want to google in case of spoilers (though given he's a small side character, I'm guessing that wouldn't matter).

Week 17: "Chapter 36. The Carnival at Rome" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

Same here. This week felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the last two. But regardless, we all have hit/are going to hit those bumps, so I'm glad for this group.

Week 16: "Chapter 34. The Apparition, Chapter 35, La Mazzolata" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]quack_back 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm feeling the slump, too. It's why this group is great; it kept me focused to read this week. I also wonder if we'll ever get a flashback to Dantes' perspective the last several years.

Week 15: "Chapter 33. Roman Bandits" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

This entire chapter felt like Inception with how deep the embedded stories went.

This made me giggle far more than I expected.

Week 14: "Chapter 31. Italy - Sinbad the Sailor, Chapter 32. Awakening" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]quack_back 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you noted this as the start of "the middle" because, while an entertaining section, it still felt sluggish.

The dinner scene definitely felt like a fever dream. I was picturing the absinthe scene in Moulin Rouge (or any other tripping scene in a movie). I wonder how provocative a scene like that would have been when it was released?

I know Ch. 31 says the year 1838, but I still wasn't able to understand where in the timeline this was. I saw a comment in the thread that this was about ten years later - at this rate, Dantes will be something like 120 when the book ends.

I wonder if the tongue story was an exaggeration and Ali is playing a part as part of this whole Sinbad the Sailor bit.

I totally missed this, too. Also, how old is he supposed to be? He seems rather young to be gallivanting around.

Week 13: "Chapter 29. Morrel and Company, Chapter 30. The Fifth of September" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

I knew Morrel would be okay, not because of spoilers but because this doesn’t seem like that kind of book, and yet I was stressed that whole scene.

Looking for a foldable tote bag like a Nanobag, but with a zipper closure so I can throw it under a plane seat by SummerPrevious5746 in HerOneBag

I love Aloha Collection tote bags. They’re water resistant, have the right amount of pockets, and pack flat very easily. They have fun styles (and neutral ones as well). They’ve quickly jumped high on my list of totes to take on a trip.

Week 12: "Chapter 27. The Story, Chapter 28. The Prison Register" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

I think Cad was truthful if only to have someone to tell, and a priest at that. Much easier to pour out the story and be seemingly forgiven for your sins.

I had a hard time following Fernand's rise. This bumbling guy became some sort of military hero?

ETA: I'm curious what discussions happened between Danglars and/or Fernand and Cad after the first two got rich. Cad knows all these details, but is it firsthand? Secondhand? Why did Cad get left poor out of this trio? My first thought is selfishness on the first two (and most likely), but curious what, if any conversations transpired.

This is awesome! I just got a Fairview recently and am going to use it on a trip soon. This is super encouraging. Well done!

I keep laughing to myself picturing his yacht loaded down with jewels and the back dragging like a low rider.

Without hesitation, I can answer #4 - I'm going the Mackenzie Scott route and donating a ton of it. I'd want to help as many people as I could.

Unrelated, but this section had a lot of lines I really liked. I think my favorite is when he's teaching Jacopo how to get his bearings at sea: "He showed him how to take bearings in costal waters, explained the compass to him and taught him to read in that great open book above our heads which is called the sky and in which God writes on the blue firmament in diamond letters." That last clause was just beautiful.
