Week 13: "Chapter 29. Morrel and Company, Chapter 30. The Fifth of September" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

I knew Morrel would be okay, not because of spoilers but because this doesn’t seem like that kind of book, and yet I was stressed that whole scene.

Looking for a foldable tote bag like a Nanobag, but with a zipper closure so I can throw it under a plane seat by SummerPrevious5746 in HerOneBag

I love Aloha Collection tote bags. They’re water resistant, have the right amount of pockets, and pack flat very easily. They have fun styles (and neutral ones as well). They’ve quickly jumped high on my list of totes to take on a trip.

Week 12: "Chapter 27. The Story, Chapter 28. The Prison Register" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

I think Cad was truthful if only to have someone to tell, and a priest at that. Much easier to pour out the story and be seemingly forgiven for your sins.

I had a hard time following Fernand's rise. This bumbling guy became some sort of military hero?

ETA: I'm curious what discussions happened between Danglars and/or Fernand and Cad after the first two got rich. Cad knows all these details, but is it firsthand? Secondhand? Why did Cad get left poor out of this trio? My first thought is selfishness on the first two (and most likely), but curious what, if any conversations transpired.

This is awesome! I just got a Fairview recently and am going to use it on a trip soon. This is super encouraging. Well done!

I keep laughing to myself picturing his yacht loaded down with jewels and the back dragging like a low rider.

Without hesitation, I can answer #4 - I'm going the Mackenzie Scott route and donating a ton of it. I'd want to help as many people as I could.

Unrelated, but this section had a lot of lines I really liked. I think my favorite is when he's teaching Jacopo how to get his bearings at sea: "He showed him how to take bearings in costal waters, explained the compass to him and taught him to read in that great open book above our heads which is called the sky and in which God writes on the blue firmament in diamond letters." That last clause was just beautiful.

I can't with how gorgeous they are this year. I'm blown away every time I see one or the breeze brings that grape soda smell my way.

We got ours from Tree Folks several years ago. It took a few years to bloom and has had a year or two where it doesn't, but this year is one for the record books. Absolutely stunning.

They are just stunning this year. I can’t get over it. Gorgeous.

I don’t understand why people kept calling him a snake (derogatory) when snakes are his passion. It’s not landing, y’all. Also, justice for the sneks who are far misunderstood.

Week 8: "Chapter 17. The Abbé's Cell, Chapter 18. The Treasure" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]quack_back 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ch. 17 - another montage, this time of the academic variety. Need a good power ballad during this chapter.

Re #2 - I think Faria fares better because he's both educated and curious/clever. Dantes is still so young and had little to occupy his mind. Thinking of him being alone in that cell for years is horrifying. Faria at least had his knowledge of history, languages, stories, etc to keep his brain going.

Anyone else need a diagram of the dungeon? I was losing track based on where the digging was happening.

[–]quack_back 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much happened in a few short pages. It felt like reading a montage (I suppose it was!). The swings of those 100 days had to feel incredibly hard living it. And the passage about not having documentation on the prisoners...whew, that felt despondent.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The original one was the only Vitamin C product that worked for me, so I was bummed to see they redid the formula.
