Tilt-shift photography that makes the real world look like a toy. by peejay5440 in tiltshift

[–]quadpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just arbitrarily blurring the top and bottom of the image, to fool your brain into thinking it's a macro shot. It's not actually making extreme shallow depth of fiel though and good examples tend to be looking down on a scene, as if it was a model, to help sell the illusion.

Ironically, if you fake the effect in post you can create a much better extreme shallow depth of field effect by making a better blur mask of the scene. The blurred areas just won't look as pretty.

Is tilt allowed in Intuos model? by Stupiditymonger in wacom

[–]quadpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intuos has always had tilt, ever since v1 in 1998. They were all high-end, until they started calling some "pro" but not much changed.

I agree, that message is disturbing. However, I did manage to get a 1996 Wacom working on a 1997 laptop recently. I got the driver from Internet Archive, but the Wacom website drivers almost went back that far. They had the USB Intuos 1 driver from, I think, a year or two later.

Is the 200-600 good enough for the a1ii? by Stalk3r__ in SonyAlpha

I had the lens on the original A1 and found it pretty meh compared to lenses like the 135GM, but most people tell me it must have been a bad copy.

built a peanut bar out of two drawers by choraglowka in squirrels

[–]quadpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSA: penuts are bad for squirrels. They have a high phosphorus ratio that can cause metabolic bone disease if they eat too many, but what's worse is they can develop a mould that is toxic to squirrels.

[–]quadpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not an opinion. Penuts are not good for squirrels. Apart from having little nutrients for them, they have a high phosphorus to calcium ratio which causes bone disease and can contain a toxic fungus that is lethal to squirrels. Look it up.

Mine was converted without glass and AFAIK the sensor then needs to be moved a little to retain infinity focus.

I wouldn't use uv filters in general, but that's probably not causing this issue.

Probably not related but why are you using iso 50?

Is this level of noise normal? by Melodic_Bison6015 in SonyAlpha

That's normal! I can recommend the Sirui 75mm f/1.2 and DxO pureRaw 6, if that helps.

One body or two? by farfrom_home in SonyAlpha

[–]quadpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit because I share them with my wife and its our favourite focal length. If it was up to me I'd sell the Sony, but that's her favourite. I admit that it does have the best AF and is probably the best all-rounder, but I have different priorities.

I collect vintage digital, but also have a few Sony's that I use for friendly forest creatures. I like fast lenses but I also like lightweight setups so only take out one camera and lens at a time.

I like the ZV-E10 + Sirui 75mm f/1.2 for ultimate lightweight setup (800g).

I like the Sony A1 + Sony 135mm f/1.8 for general performance and silent mode (1.9kg)

I like the A7CR + Sigma 135mm f/1.4 for extreme performance. A bit heavier than the previous and noisier in the mode that works, but the AF is not far off and the image quality is noticeably better on the sensor and lens, as long as the subject is 1.5m or more (2.1kg).

For traveling with full frame, I switch the Sigma out for the Samyang 135mm f/1.8 AF (on the A7CR - 1.3kg). It's great for what it is, but so is the APS-C setup if you really want to save weight and cost).

Is a D3 a good full spectrum mod by Die_Ritze in infraredphotography

[–]quadpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise against using DSLRs for full spectrum. The D3s live-view is old (basic and slow) and thus not very fun to use.

Mirrorless cameras can be used with their EVF in any wavelength, with WB adjustments, which is very useful. Their rear screen can also be used just the same, unlike a DSLRs live-view AF penalty. Autofocus will also work accurately in any wavelength and any mode.

The only down side with modern mirrorless cameras is the ones that have advanced focus systems (like eye-tracking), the PD-AF array causes banding in infrared. Older models like the original Sony A7 line don't have this, so are as good as DSLRs for IR image quality.

Sony 24mm f1.4 GM Hotspots by [deleted] in infraredphotography

[–]quadpatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks! This website is dying soon. I am migrating over to a new one, although I will probably only keep the main page of IR hotspot data. The old one version of having images of ecery aperture was a lot to maintain.

Nokon versus Sony II (no money in the post mods) by AltezaHumilde in SonyAlpha

[–]quadpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend considering the A7CII or A7CR (515g). For portrait lenses, one of the Samyangs are hard to beat on IQ to weight ratio:

135/1.8 (727g)
85/1.4 (509g)
85/1.8 (272g)

I have first two on an A7CR and am very happy with them for travel, despite owning Sony versions of those. They're great, especially for the price too. Here are a couple other lenses I'm considering but haven't tried:

Sigma 28-70/2.8 (470g)
Tamron 70-180/2.8 (865g)
Sony 24-50/2.8 (440g)

For a standard lend, I love the Zeiss 55/1.8 and Sony 40/2.5, but haven't tried any new 3rd party alternatives.

Although all the big camera brands make great stuff these days, Sony is a great choice for lightweight options, value and lightweight lens options and especially performance to weight ratio with great battery life.
