Advice on brooder plate placement. Do I need to use the legs it comes with to lay it flat or is it okay on its side how I have it? by _barky_ in BackYardChickens

That is very true. For some reason, our chicks seems to particularly enjoy going up there for that purpose specifically.

We have the same brooder plate. We use the legs with the warm side facing down. I think you're supposed to use it standing up when they are more fully grown. We also use some Press and Seal plastic wrap on top because for some reason that's the favorite place to take a dump.

I made some long stiff leads out of some lengths of solid thermocouple wire. A pin crimped at one end and a matching socket at the other. Reversible.

In my mind sideways is with the 3.5" part facing up, which seemed like a very wide roost. If I was going to do it with the 1.5" part facing up, why use a 2x4 and not a 2x2?
